Simple, and a good rhythm exercise for a beginner. It does get repetitive, but has a lot of expansion possibilities. Most beginners can get stuck on left-right coordination (I know I did), so dependent and independent exercise like this can build up confidence.

This would also make a good warm up. Get the fingers to loosen up on something simply but groovy.
