If you haven’t yet bought an oscillating multi-tool it’s arguably the most versatile power tool ever produced. It can be corded or cordless and has won over woodworkers, remodeling contractors, and do-it-yourselfers.
What is an oscillating tool you might ask? An oscillating tool is a compact, portable power tool that accepts a wide range of interchangeable blades, which can be used to sand, cut, scrape, grind and polish. The blade vibrates-or oscillates-back and forth at very high speed, making the tool much easier and safer to use than a circular saw, reciprocating saw, or even a jigsaw. It’ll slice through virtually any building material, including wood, metal, drywall, cement, mortar, plastic, and fiberglass. And, a multi-tool will work in places other power tools wouldn’t dare go, including narrow spaces, tight corners, and awkward angles.
Thanks again to Justin Dow for some of the bonus footage while he is working on a garage remodel. You can check out his channel here: / @justindowdiycentralhi...

It’s good enough to outline the box on the wood. Then continue with a multi tool. Easy, & clean process. Thanks for the vid!

Most OSB for walls are 7/16 which for a newbie it might make sense to use the box tool first then switch to a plunge saw so your lines are strait on just a thought

I found the technique on these outlet-cutter boxes is that rocking back and forth is not enough, you actually need to pull out a little to let the dust clear out, and then resume the cut. Doing this every few seconds makes the tool work much faster.

Thanks for testing on wood. Replacing outlets in our house. Previous owners installed paneling over drywall and didn't cut all outlets properly. Used a blade for cutting outlets but finally caught myself and switched to my multi-tool. Lack the same level of control with my MT compared to blade. Would be nice to have a tool that took some of the guess work out of the cuts. Guess I'll have to hit up the Ace and just find better mt wood attachments.

I think the big advantage getting the Bauer box tool as opposed to the plunge cut is you don’t have to worry about plunging into something you might not know what’s in the wall. You can guess and calculate all you want but there are things that hide in the walls. Unless if it’s brand new drywall and you know exactly where everything is. Great video Chris 👍

I do a large amount of remodeling, and this works good for me, as the sheetrock is already in place, and hard to know exactly what is behind it. I also have a jig that doesn't let it jump and damage the already finished wall. Quick and easy.

This is the only reason im iffy about it with a jab saw because with a jab saw u can start at a corner and if u hit a stud u missed u can move your template

Show some self respect and get yourself a quality tool. 🤧I disagree with the posts that pick at your for not doing a good cut. A little sandpaper can do wonders to level out bad cuts. Using a bottom of the barrel Oscillating tool does no service to testing the harbor freight cutout tool. I am not endorsing Dewalt but I have a brushless Dewalt 20v cordless oscillating tool. I am endorsing Home Depot, that is where I get my cordless power tools. The Dewalt will cut out a electric box outlet in 20 seconds or less. Dude we're cutting drywall here not concrete. With soft materials like drywall; it's the oscillations that are doing The Cutting not really the teeth. I've cut through multiple layers of drywall with a scraper blade before in a pinch. As far as cutting the first hole too small. That was simply gaslighting. Any real contractor knows that you always either trace the Box 4 perfect cut lines cuz some of them are little different; or that it is better to cut on or just outside of the line to make sure that there is clearance for the box and that it's not too tight. oscillating blades are barely 1/32 of an inch thick, we're cutting in a box here not doing joinery🤷‍♂️ Next point about the framing nails you were talking about; simply throw on a T style oscillating blade that is meant for wood with nails. They're twice as wide as that blade that you were using and won't get damaged if you hit a nail. As far as cutting too deep; 90% of oscillating blades come with a depth gauge on it so you know how deep your cutting🤷‍♂️. And lastly if it takes someone more than 30 seconds to cut out an electrical box with a T style oscillating blade, they should probably get a new profession. Honestly I only come to videos like these to see how fast these gimmick boxes and other gimmicky tools perform, just so I can challenge myself to beat the gimmicks with skill. Ironically I'm doing an electrical box tomorrow and I guarantee I'll beat 30 seconds with no jigs, no blowouts, no gouging. To people with skills; these things are nothing more than an easy way out for people that don't want to develop their skills. And they really don't save you a whole lot of time anyway unless you're carrying multiple multi-tools on you on the job because the time you saved cutting the whole is lost switching out the blade for another task🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. Skill will always outperform technology when honed. Hone your abilities young Padawan. You'll be faster than that little box with some practice.

It's pretty slow, and it only cuts one size hole. Terrible idea for an apprentice to have one of these, IMO. Apprentices are there to learn their trade, and they're supposed to make mistakes along the way, that's the best way to learn. Plus, I'd love to be there so I could partake in the ball-breaking session that would ensue if an apprentice broke one of those out on a jobsite.

Interesting video. I've never seen a box cut out so poorly as your "hand cut" example, even by an inept homeowner. Rather than embellish the, hard to begin jumping around the surface, freehand cut with the straight cut blade, drop your speed to the lowest setting, then learn how to cut with the blade. Was this a purposeful effort to klutz things up and try to show how the box cutter is superior when it isn't? As with any tool, there are tips and tricks to improve performance. Maintain your cut with a corner of the blade, level out at the finish. You may also notice that many of the blades have teeth slanted in one direction, that's a clue on the direction of your cut for efficiency and ease of starting. This came across as a pitch for the cut-out box tool, not an objective review.
