Rinse the shell of the sea urchin and take out the beak (or the mouth) by inserting a sharp pair of scissors, grab, twist, and pull it out. This creates the opening for you to insert 2 spoons with the tips of the back against each other like this. Squeeze the top of the handles and it will crack the uni in half. Dump out the insides that is filled with digested kelp and pick out the leftover kelp that is stuck on gonads. Rinse it until the water comes out clear. You can use your spoon to pick out the gonads or if they're loose, scoop ithem out with your hands gently. Wash off the uni and soak it in salt water for a few minutes. Scoop the uni onto a dry paper towel and enjoy!

Sea urchins are decimating the kelp forests of Central and Southern California largely due to climage change-related issues. So, eat those unis and take some of the pressure off this delicate biome!!

Problem is no one wants low quality sea urchins, so just collecting them to eat doesn’t really solve the issue sadly. From what I hear the low quality ones make good fishing bait though. Maybe one day that could make a big dent in the issue.

@jaehyunoverse
@jaehyunoverse Жыл бұрын
@@madnessintomagic balut is good though. You’re just letting prejudice take over your brain. Plus, there’s different numbers/levels in which balut is classified. Not all balut has the duck fully formed. There’s no.16 where it’s just a normal egg. Plus, it’s literally just the same as a chicken egg.
@madnessintomagic
@madnessintomagic Жыл бұрын
@@jaehyunoverse nice. The streeeeeetch in circular logic you have to bend over backwards to make to turn that into a “prejudice” (racist? really?) thing is staggering. There’s nothing prejudiced or racist about being turned off by the idea of eating fermented fetus that actually looks like an intact dead baby duck. There’s nothing about that that is a criticism of the *people*, only a personal feeling about the dish. And there’s nothing about balut that is “the same as a chicken egg” aside from having a shell. I wouldn’t have bothered to even write so much if you hadn’t inexcusably accused me of prejudice over something completely unrelated to that. wow

At the risk of sounding dumb, does that hurt it if it is alive? Like, when you crack the beak, does it hurt? I feel like cracking the shell wouldn’t hurt because it’s a shell, but idk. When you eat the “meat,” is that part alive? Does it feel you chomping on it? Genuine questions 😅😅

Yeah. People do shit like that. A lot, actually. A few examples in other businesses to varying degrees of severity: People selling awful records, or low quality records being printed and sold Car mechanics messing up someone’s car and not bothering to tell them (less common in modern times) Hospital hills being incorrectly calculated and charging someone more than they owe (from what I’ve researched this is mostly a problem in America, where medical bills are crazy enough as it is) Improperly manufactured lighters being distributed (again, less common modernly but still happens in countries/states with a low quality control)

So does every animal you eat (depends on what farm you get it from) this is less painful than those chickens who lives in tiny cages and get their beaks cut off and force fed. And those cows who were forced to be pregnant for milk Plus i doubt sea urchins feel pain at all because they dont have the same receptors like mammal. Pleaseee, the double standard people have on livestock

@@SaoirseVisceral As far as i know we are not exactly sure if sea urchins feel pain but you may assume they do. Also your argument is whataboutism. Just because other animals are killed in a more violent way, does not mean that it is okay to cut open a live sea urchin. To someone who got robbed you would not say "well some people get killed by robbers, so don't complain" (at least I hope so) and the original comment did not even mention it is okay to eat cows, drink milk etc. Maybe they are vegetarian or vegan? I agree that we are doing horrible things to animals just for the sake of our pleasure but please use a different type of argument next time, this one makes you seem overly emotional and unrational.
