Editing visuals and charts in Power BI just became more Excel-like. So if you're familiar with formatting charts in Excel, you will love this Power BI update!
Microsoft introduced a new way to build and format visuals directly ON the visual. It puts common actions for creating and formatting visuals on the visuals themselves, actions such as adding fields, changing visualization types, and formatting text. Just like you're used to in Excel charts.
You can now easily format your bar, column and line charts directly on the canvas. There is an object edit mode. You don't have to keep going to the side panel to make your updates. Double click on your visual to get the blue border and edit the chart as you need. Check out the video and time stamps for more detail.
After-all most people who open Microsoft Power BI for the first time are overwhelmed. They struggle to navigate around the many panes to perform even simple actions. This update will change that.
Note: This feature for contextual on-object interaction with Power BI visuals is currently in preview. You need to turn it on manually in the Options - Preview features.

I understand that this is useful for people transitioning from Excel. BUT I really hope that they keep it as an option and don't end up forcing it upon us. For seasoned PBI users, it's a lot more effort and clicking.
@Scott-lc5kh
@Scott-lc5kh Жыл бұрын
They’ll force it for sure. Just look at the new visualisations pane (which I guess is gone with this new update 🤷‍♂️). Most users hated the changes. They went ahead and forced it on us anyway. I swear no one working on the powerbi UI at MS uses the product. If they did, they wouldn’t have made many of the decisions they have recently.

Yours was not the first channel showing the new options. But your video was so far the best one in terms of explaining the features, especially the not so obvious ones in a crisp way, without getting lost in details. Btw, I like the new format options.

I am pretty new to Power BI. The company pushed out the Power BI update without telling us what the changes were. I thought I was losing my mind. Though I figured out some of it, this video really sorted everything out. Sane again. Thank you.

It takes a little bit to get used to, but after using for a couple months, I really do think it’s worth it. If you’re designing a whole page, maybe not. But when you just want to change some formatting quickly, I love it. I didn’t know what the blue boundary was doing so I’m happy I found this video.

I'm sure there'd be some temporary discomfort when moving over to this view, but maybe in the long run - its a beneficial upgrade to utilise. I've found that the formatting pain was difficult to understand when I first started using power bi - but now it's intuitive to me - purely because I use it every day. I'm on some reddit groups for power bi / data science - and formatting improvement is a regularly discussed feature. Maybe they're listening to their users more now. thanks for making this video - I'll try out this new view. :)

Thanks for the great introduction to Power BI's new features, Leila! As someone who is more comfortable creating and customising charts in Excel, these new features definitely make it easier for me to use Power BI for data visualisation. Tbh, I had always been a little intimidated by that Formatting pane (shhh don't tell anyone, it's a secret!) 😂

I prefer this other approach, but I am an Excel user. And I think a lot of Power BI users also use Excel (and other Office apps). What I like most is the option to use the right mouse button in more situations. In my Excel courses (but also other programs) I always tell that the right mouse button is your BFF (Best Friend Forever). Why? Because with every update things CAN be replaced and then you have to search. But most of the times the things you need most are under that mousebutton!

Dear Laila Ghurani, Your videos are valuable thank you for your rentless efforts. I am currently working in project where most of the issues are time related , measured in hours and minutes, as you know Power Bi is not customed to add or subtract hours. Please if you share a video for simple addition and subtraction of hours data in Power Bi , I would be thankful. The machinery rental rates and the worked Gower for people are the measure for payments and related computations of efficiency , Please I really appreciate if you do a video on that.

Hi Leila I have a common problem with Power BI. It's really making me frustrated because everytime I use that, I don't know what would be the result. Eveyrtime I use tooltip option for a huge data (for example candlestick of an stock for more than a month) I will see that the tooltip has a scrollbar at the bottom. And you definitely know it is useless! Because you can't hover the mouse on that. So I am not able to see the whole data. Is there a way to show all the data in the chart without dealing with scrollbar? (Like Excel Charts that doesn't have scrollbar) Looking forward to get help. Thanks a lot.
