This feels like a Christmas present! I LOVE herbs! I just split and shared mine with my Mother and gave her an indoor grow rack with lighting to help her grow lettuces and herbs through the winter. I set it up for her yesterday! Love this video! Thank you!

It totally does! If you can keep it on until a good mat of leaves are out, you'll avoid the buggers altogether! :-)

I love you -- haven't commented in awhile but watch often -- maintaining 80-90 degrees is a challenge. My established herbs winter over well Zone 6b (Pennsylvania) outside although patchy, and I'm picking the scraps, but it would be great to have them through the winter, hardy, fresh and pickable for cooking.

Hey, nice to hear from you again Tom!! Yeah, I love the hardy herbs like Thyme, Oregano, and Rosemary....the indoor ones only need the heat for germination....after that, you can back down the temps to just room temperature. Cheers man! :-)

QUESTION: I made a soil-less seed starting mix (vermiculite, worm castings and coco coir). Can I grow them to maturity using this mix (plus water soluable fertilizer), or will I have to use potting soil eventually?

If you're adding food to the mix, then most certainly you can grow herbs soil-less. 🙂

What are your thoughts on growing Garlic and Onions indoors during Winter in containers? I Have 4 Garlic and 2 onions that rooted and potted. My spare bedroom is equipped with grow lights and full spectrum lights and a heater to keep the temperature in the mid 70s. Currently growing four 2+ year old Eureka Lemon trees, 20 Valencia Orange seedlings and 6 Ohio Buckeye seedlings. And 4 Tomato seedlings. P.S. I live in Northeast Coastal South Carolina near North Myrtle Beach.

Hey Jason, for 95% of seeds, its only moisture and temperature. Some seeds do sort of need light to sprout sometimes (lettuce).

It always comes down to temperature and moisture. Moisture to initiate germination and heat to dictate how fast it goes. Too wet, the seeds drown. Too dry, they don't crack the seed coat properly. Too hot and the seeds get cooked. Too cold however, and they take too long to sprout properly.

👣👣 a couple neat tricks i found as well are when planting small seeds I place seeds in the palm of my hand and wet the end of a chop stick or similar and it picks up seeds one at a time even super small ones like celery or carrots etc. Place them in your hole and they come right off works amazing. I also use a syringe with no needle for watering. It is so soft and gentle no soil gets disturbed. I am currently using a 25ml syringe I got from the feed mill.👣👣👣👣
