That was a really well done winch demo. Thanks for the neutral reminder! I forget that sometimes. FYI the red Warn strap is for safety when spooling the line/hook in. The idea is that you NEVER have your hands/fingers anywhere near the fairlead when the hook is approaching its seated position. That winch could crush anything that gets between the hook and fairlead, your fingers included. Warn hopes you’ll hold the red strap and nothing else as the hook approaches its home. I threw mine in the trash on day one, I think they look silly, but if I lose a finger one day I might regret that. Lol!

If you do use this winch in the field or for recoveries look at the duty cycle. My own Rule of thumb is winch for 5 seconds off for 10-15 seconds. Yes it takes a lot of extra time, but imagine how much time it would take to remove that bumper/grill to replace the motor if it burnt out. It is the most common thing I see in the off-road world everyone just holds the button down and I can say it gets loud and weak after doing a few full length line pulls under load. I’ve even seen people come out to save the day and burn there winch motor out, pop fuses, damage alternators burn up alternator wires it’s not a good day when u save sombody else’s day and yours got real expensive Very good video lots of attention to detail and lots of good tips and good points just keep duty cycle in mind the winch will have an owners manual and it will be written in the manual

Thanks for watching. I had a cheaper winch on my last Jeep. The normal rule of thumb I used was 30 seconds on 30 seconds off. It seemed to work for me and I never had any problems with it. Generally good info, but you should brush up on winching safety. The red Warn nylon strap is so you don't get your fingers ripped off. Hold the strap, not the hook, not the rope between the hook and the fairlead. Always wear gloves. Your hands are in a very dangerous position at the end where you are putting the final tension on the hook. Be safe out there.

I have a winch on a low profile bumper like the reviewer. The problem with letting the truck provide the tension is one of visibility. The "installer" is squatting down low looking thru the fairlead to make sure the line goes on smooth, while the truck is being pulled toward him - not to mention the installer is also out of sight of the pilot steering the vehicle. That's a potential train wreck... The winches you see on the bumper of Jeeps are very often protruding from a much more forward mounted bumper and less of an issue for the "installer". I have to pull something toward my winch when I properly tension it.

@@GReviewz Dude, a ride on mower weighs like 450 lbs max, pulling it you're probably only pulling like 200 lbs of force because it's on wheels. If you have a winch you should have either a tree saver or a recovery rope or both; you can't use your winch without them. You should've been pulling a car or truck to properly tension your line. You need like 800 lbs of pretension on it. And no, if you use your winch it's not because you did something wrong, it's because you're recovering someone or you were really going through some thick mud or snow got stuck and instead of risking damaging your or someone's vehicle you decided to go the gentle route and winch it out.
@Xs395 Жыл бұрын
My smittybilt winch mentions having 1000lb of *line* tension when winding the winch for the first time. What concerns me is that you're using an approximate 450lb tractor in neutral up a gradual incline, which means that a tiny fraction of that weight is actually being applied to that line in tension. It looks taught but it's so slack that you can obviously guide the line left and right with your hand while it spools. It may not be enough.
@GReviewz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. This video was a demo on what the process was. Like I stated in the video it’s best to use the trucks weight to tension the winch line. Yes my lawn tractor is under weight for a proper tension. My wife could apply the brakes on the tractor causing the line tension to go up quite a bit. Even under 1000lbs of tention you can still guide line to a certain extent. The worst thing you don’t want happening is just tensioning the line and it gets all bound up from not guiding the line making the wraps on the spool uneven etc.

It’s the same thing why so many guys at the boat ramp end up in the water… if you just simply put your truck in park and winch on something you will shear the transmission park pin. So it’s better to pop it into neutral and keep your foot on the brake..
@ecocav0222 Жыл бұрын
I saw in my owner's manual it said at least 1,000 pounds needed. Was your lawn mower at 450 pounds still good then?
@GReviewz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I have used my winch since doing this method and had no problems! Some people just lean back and use their body weight. I had my wife apply the brakes on the lawn tractor also. I will say it’s best to use the recommended 1000lbs or the tricks weight which is best!
@FortunateSon Жыл бұрын
Nice video. Rookie question: You were making sure that it coiled onto the spool cleanly by pulling it left and right. Is this an issue if you were doing an actual recovery? I've never really heard anybody mention it or act concerned. They just stand back and run the winch (obviously under a lot more tension). In other words, do I have to worry about my winch getting all jumbled up during a recovery? Thanks and cool truck!
@GReviewz Жыл бұрын
No that is a great question… obviously the newer synthetic winch line is much softer and more compliant than the steel line..because there isn’t as much pull on the line while pulling my lawn tractor if I didn’t pull left and right it most likely will get all messed up… now during an actual pull there is a lot of torque on the line which helps it spool to the lowest point which helps it spool on correctly.. the steel cable was better at it than synthetic but still should be just fine.

Thanks for watching... lol if your going to go that far you should spend some more and get a side by side... maybe Polaris or Can am!! The best way is just hook winch to tree and tow the whole trucks weight... do you have a power wagon?

If the line snaps it will fall to the ground. Its a nylon rope not a cable
@GReviewz3 жыл бұрын
Yes sir I do understand the nylon vs steel cable. I was more or less doing a video based on what warn recommends. Do you have a power wagon?
@humbleholler Жыл бұрын
that's like 40 pounds of tension. nicely inflated tires on a smooth driveway? that cable is not tensioned whatsoever. My toddler could push that lawn mower in neutral. at least toss a big 'ol truck tire out on the lawn, and run a hook to the middle and yank that. preferably, hook your actual truck to another truck or a pole and use that!

As stated in my video this was just a demonstration. I’m not defending the lawn mower, it wasn’t a lot of resistance but definitely more than 40 lbs. wife had brakes depressed like 50% and my driveway does have some grade.. yes I have tensioned it with the full weight of the truck hooked to a tree.. thanks for the ideas..

15 minutes for a winch stretch demo? That's like a 10 minute video on making ice cubes! Lol!
@GReviewz2 жыл бұрын
Lol true however my vids are meant for people who don’t know the topic. If I do everything in a minute people will be asking me a lot of questions if I go nice and slow and explain it all I don’t get too many questions… which I like… I guess then I get comments about why I took so long…can’t make anyone happy..

With all due respect, the need for a winch is pretty close to zero.....not many people take a high dollar vehicle out "mudding" or ever encounter any other need for it - likely just a good way to get hurt if you don't know what you are doing
@GReviewz2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The winch in general is like an insurance policy. Most people just pay for it and never need it, but when you do you do. I personally have never needed it for myself but I have used it twice on some random guys the we’re stuck. Just remember we are American… how much stuff do you own that isn’t necessary…oh not sure if you know but the power wagon comes with the winch from the factory…
@xXDocHolidayXx2 жыл бұрын
you'd be surprised how many people do just that. it is human nature to push our toys whether drag racing, street racing, rock crawling, or just good ole trail riding. i buried my 60k gladiator so deep i had 3 inches of muddy water in my floor boards because I didnt think I was gonna get stuck and didnt have anyone close to pull me out. winch is being installed this weekend so I dont have to worry about it.

I’ve had a winch on my Jeep for 5 years and wheel pretty aggressively. I’ve never needed the winch for myself but it’s there for worst case or if I need to help someone else that I can’t get out with a strap/Bubba Rope.

You shouldn’t remove your strap from the hook as it is easy advertising for the Winch manufacturer 🫠
@GReviewz2 жыл бұрын
Lol. I’m fine advertising for warn! Plus only real truck/off-road people know what the power wagon or a winch is anyway..
