The sponge trick was very interesting, another way of painting cloacks is with these new speed paints, also the GW's contrast could be used (I tried Ceramite White and it's good)

Thank you, it was a bit of trial and error, as i was getting irritated by the fibers of tissue - i think those thin kitchen sponges would work nicely too , the ones that are pretty thin and come in like 5 pack from a pound shop :)

@@SwordsandBrushes Myself too. I've had an elf army for a few years but I think I'm a lot better at painting now and will start a new force. But trying to replicate the cloaks in the Hobbit for Rivendell soldiers is extremely difficult! They have a sort of shimmery silver camouflage. I'll probably just stick with purple!

Fantastic, i do find that they are a birlliant tool to have in your painting arsenal. Just watch out for the really cheap "plastic/synthetic" bristled brushes, they are too hard and wont work nearly as good as a soft haired brush. I learned this early on! :)

I don't want you to paint Haldirs Elves, I NEED you to paint Haldirs Elves! As always, great tutorial, I've learned a lot! I'm going to try all three methods on some of my spare Rivendell Elves, since I'm curious what the result will be on a much flatter surface. Also a question to you, what is your experience with Army Painter? I hear a lot of mixed feelings about their range, some people think the paint is too thick, other people love it. Love to hear your thoughts!

consider it added to my list! I have some haldir elf minis and some last alliance ones to get through myself as well! It's a good idea testing out on some spare miniatures, with the larger flatter cloaks i dont thing you would need much pressure to build up the layers. The Elrond and Nazgul photos at the end of the video came out nice enough for me with make up brushes, and it's something that im testing out more and more for different miniatures - monsters are perfect for them too! In terms of Army painter, i really like the range - I was a pure GW person back in. the day, as its all that i knew and i used the citadel paint range for 10+ years before i made the switch. I switched over to Army painter when they introduced products that i didnt know about before which were coloured sprays that match paints and then the dips which were spot on for mass painting. The paints themselves are very very simillar in my mind, in terms of thickness, regardless of brand i will always add a touch of water to thin down so i can paint a bit smoother, but the main things i like are: the colour range, the dropper bottles, and the shade paints - i have also got my hand on the speed paints so i will test them out. I would suggest, if you are intrigued by them - try a paint and see what you think - perhaps a black or a metallic and even a Dark Tone - and you could compare for yourself :):) Hope that helps a bit?

@@SwordsandBrushes Just to be clear, I just meant the whole HAldir's elves tutorial. But yes, solid review, Army Painter makes a solid line. It falls down compared to gw in SOME places but is a fair bit cheaper. Reliable brand i use all the time. I use their offwhites and quickshades ALL the time

Thank you very much, im glad that you are liking the content so far :) Oh yes! for speed paints i LOVE doing black! However it's through an airbrush, ive not really tried it with a brush so far - due to the projects ive been working on - but i reckon they should work. i tend to spray a model black and then airbrush a mid tone grey (nothing too bright and not white!) but leaving the black in the recesses slightly. Afterwards, then cut back in with some type of colour e.g blue, purple - to get some coloured tones in there. Let it dry and then black that in over the top. Works very nicely. Id probably try the same colours but paint them by brush - i have some evil miniatures coming up soon so may try it out! :)

Not a problem, sorry i mean you can add a layer of a coloured paint such as blue or purple ( this can go over the mid tone grey - and it will come out with a subtle dark version of the paint you are applying. Then after thats dry add some black into the recesses - this will make you blacks darker for the shadows and also darken down the coloured areas slightly. It's a bit awkward trying to explain it in just text, so i. will add it to my list and make a KZbin short of it haha :)

Hey I’m looking at getting into the hobby and are currently looking at what paints to get. I seen at the beginning of the video you had three reds (dark, medium and bright) is this usually the general rule of thumb when getting paints? And advice would be amazing even a video would really help. I’m getting confused with all the different videos and the warhammer paints arnt helping as there are thousands of them 😂

Nice! A warm welcome to the hobby (if you do decide to jump in!) Yes there are so many companies out there! I would say it is one way of painting, usually a base colour (the darkest) a mid colour (slightly lighter) and then a bright colour for a highlight) - but there are a few other ways to achieve that - such as using washes/shades or speedpaints - but i wont complicate matters in a message - just try and watch a few videos on the channel and i think you will get to digest a few methods :) Theres a few main ones that come to mind... I cant comment much on Vallejo as i have only used their airbrush paints and they are nice enough with a massive amount of colours to chose from - i find that some are so close in colour that i cant tell the difference really after you put washes and highlight son them. I used GW paint for over 10 years and then now use army paints so i can say that from my experience that both ranges are pretty good. The paint is very similar and the colour range is nice - but i do prefer Army painter shades compared to GW washes - they just seem to flow better. Id say if you can find a local hobby store that may have some open paints that you can try then give them a go - or perhaps get a few colours to did your toe in - such as some browns, greens and metallics - as they would be used more often than not on all manner of projects. In terms of brushes - my favourite are Winsor and Newton series 7, they last the longest for me but are the most expensive, i use them with a combination of Army painter as i find them to be a solid brush (but less expensive) for what i need them for - and i paint A LOT! haha I hope that helps a bit? :):)

That sounds like a brilliant idea, it's something that i have added to my notes of potential to do's - as im just starting out on youtube myself i have many ideas and a limited time to do everything. Gold is spot on for my elves, i've used it in the past for Stormcast and Custodes for 40k, as soon as its down, thats half the job done right there :):)

Would be really cool to see a group or rangers but all the cloaks done with different tones of greens and browns, so even though the colours are the same it would be as if they had different shades due to wear and obtaining them in different places

@Swords and Brushes absolutely please do, it would totally give me some indication then, it always bugs me when rangers have the same uniform cloaks, I feel it would be more lf a mix and match of greens and browns you know, even more autumnal maybe, I dunno, feel like it would be easier to spot 100 rangers all in one colour than to have them in a mix. But yeah I'm not sure how to execute it so would be happy for you to try =)
