Having had some communication from a technical person at Microsoft that really knew how things worked for the renewals, I can tell you that it is based on automatic telemetry over the course of the period that your tenant has been active. So if you do it all in the first two days, or scatter it through the months, it doesn't matter at all. What matters is that different workloads have been used during that time. Just go ahead and do them all in one go is fine. Mark.

Yes, knowing what is going on inside the magical box called Microsoft cloud is a definite mystery. However, everybody who has followed these instructions has had the tenant renew. Recently I created a new E5 tenant and left it alone completely. I got the note to say it had a very short amount of time to go. Checking it today it has 2 days left! So I then went through all the steps in the video. I wanted to see what happens when you leave a tenant until right up until the date, then attempt to use it. I will post back with what happens. I got the note last night that the tenant had been renewed. This was two days after it was showing up as 'Expired' in the console. That means that the telemetry data they use did take effect however remember that I did the tasks before it expired. What it shows is that as long as you do all the tasks before the expiry date then it should renew, even if you have to wait a couple of days for it to take effect.

No worries at all. The subscription should automatically get renewed when it hits about 20-30 days to go before it expires. I would suggest you go into each of the items and make some small basic changes so that the the update timestamps get changed. That way the tenant isn't static and you should be all good. Mark.

What you can do is firstly do all the steps (unless the status is truly disabled) then inside the tenant log a service request and ask for it to be reactivated. That can work. If you are at a point where you really can’t do anything inside it and it is set for deletion you are passed the point of recovery, then get as much data out as you can and just create a new E5 tenant. Hope that helps in some way.

The metrics around the renewal work on a number of developer related tasks. That doesn't mean that you have to do those ones I do specifically, but they will definitely get your tenant renewed. I would suggest that even if you are developing for Azure and Entra ID then just do those other tasks anyway to make sure.

The way Microsoft check these things is always a small mystery, however everybody that has followed these steps since I published the video has successfully had their tenant renewed. Sometimes if the expiry date was fast approaching and these tasks were done then it a question whether or not the renew will actually happen. My opinion is that you should do them consistently throughout the time you have the Dev Tenant. I would expect though that your tenant will renew so hold on tight and wait for that glorious email from Microsoft. Hope that helps out with a small amount of peace of mind for you.

That is exactly what happens. You get 90 days from when you start and it will get renewed about 30 days before it expires if you perform all those tasks that then shows you are using it for development.

The best way is just to go into the M365 admin center in your tenant and create a few dummy users. Then add those in. Hope that helps.

You really should be doing all of those items. It shows to Microsoft that you are actually using the tenant as a developer and demonstrating a willingness to use their technology in that development sense. Be careful about using it for production purposes as they can disable your tenant quickly if they see it used for anything but development. Mark.

Hi. The main thing about the renewals are that they are based on a usage metric that Microsoft run. The concept I have in the video is about getting the usage metric high enough so when they look at the tenant for renewal then it goes through. It doesn't instantly renew, it will wait until Microsoft scan the tenant and decide if they are renewing it. The best way is to do as much as possible and then wait for the email telling you it is getting renewed. Hope that helps. Mark.

Hi. It will mean that when Microsoft do their checks on the tenant before they renew it, then it will pass. The renewal checks are normally done about a month before it expires. I always get the renewal email saying they have renewed it about 25 days before the expiry date.

That is a good question, as no tenant is going to have exactly the same timing of renewals/emails/etc. I would expect that if you have performed all the tasks then you would get one about a week or so before the expiration. You can also log a support request from inside the tenant, saying that you use it for dev purposes and that you would like to see it renewed. That is an option that can help.

If it gets disabled, then there is unfortunately no way to recover it. Those steps need to be done before it expires.

You can only have 25 E5 licenses in the E5 dev tenant. However, it is possible to purchase additional E3 licenses for about $8 per month. Still for development only but that can help. Go to the Purchase Services option in the Licensing Tab in the Admin Center to find it. Mark.

Hi. There are two logins you would have. The first is your developer account login for the developers.microsoft.com site. This lets you view the overall dev account and will give you the status of your Dev tenant. Then there is the login to the M365 Dev tenant itself. Both are different identities. With the first login you can check the status, but you will need the tenant credentials to actually get into the tenant and perform any function in there. Hi. It is possible, but how long ago did you perform all the steps? Before the date of the expiration, or after that? The cancellation date normally appears after the possible renewal has already passed. If that was the case then it is unlikely to get renewed, so I suggest you get any data that you need out of there quickly.

If it already expired then the automatic process of Microsoft picking up the metrics is most likely not going to work. These things need to be done before it expires. However, I do know that success has been had by logging a support ticket with Microsoft and asking them to reactivate it. It made a sample one a couple of months back and let it expire with the intent that I would then ask Microsoft to reactivate it. To see what happens. That worked. So no reason why it shouldn't work for you. Mark.

That won't matter at all. Just perform all those tasks in the video and it will renew fine. It is all about workload usage in the tenant so make sure that is all done.

Hi. It may well be that you have missed the deadline for running those tasks that I talk about. There is a possibility that if you perform them all then it may work but I do doubt that. Is it possible for you to fire up a new tenant and shift over the data you have there? That may be your only option seeing as the expiry has happened. Sorry to tell you that.

Generally everything needs to be done before you hit the 30-35 day threshold. There is still a chance that it will renew but you need to make sure you are getting those stats in there for development usage. Go create a couple more PowerApps and do things in Teams. That should trigger it. However remember this is only a guideline and the backend at Microsoft can change its requirements from time to time, for different Azure data center locations too. Initially, did only the sharepoint steps but it didn't work. With just 2 days remaining I did the Power Apps and Power Automate steps and all 5 subscriptions were renewed. How do I keep doing this going forward to ensure the subscriptions get renewed? Do I continue doing these steps every month?

Excellent. Well the subscription renews every 90 days, so just make minor updates to the things you did, like adding things to the SharePoint site, adding a couple of additional automations in PowerApps, publish another Canvas App. Just things to make the Microsoft metric see that you are actively using it. Then it will renew again.

Hmmm unfortunately no you can't. Once it expires then it is hard to get it back. It is possible to attempt a support call with Microsoft to ask them, however in a deactivated E5 Dev Tenant a lot of the support options are not there. Sorry about that.

Hi. If the data is gone and the tenant removed then you won't be able to get that back. If however it has just expired and is sitting in that 30 day window where it is soft deleted, then it looks like you didn't meet the requirements for the auto renew. If the data is vital to recover then you can apply a base E3 license to the tenant for a cheaper price, I think $8 a month, then you can assign the license to where you need to recover data from. Yes it does count. As long as you are actively doing things of a development nature in the tenant, that is what is being tracked and will get you renewed. :-)

You can't get an old one back if it has expired. The tasks need to be done before it expires, sorry. But see if you can get a new one and make sure you perform those tasks before the renewal date comes up.

If the Dev Tenant has completely expired and you can't even log in with the account that you had then it must have been a while ago that it happened. There isn't really a way back from that, the tenants need to have the metrics of usage whilst they are still active or they will most likely drop off. If you are able to login there you can sometimes log a support ticket to get it activated. Sorry about that.

That depends if you have a paid VS Sub, or if you are just using Visual Studio Essentials. Microsoft have started blocking the ability to create new Dev tenants which is sad. Mark.

Not sure if I understood the question. The steps don't force a renewal straight away, but it means that when the renewal is pending that you have ticked all the boxes and the chances of an auto renewal are very high. If you leave it alone then it will almost certainly expire.

The accounts that you would add in are going to be local accounts on your tenant. They don't have to be real people, just create a few dummy user accounts with made up names in your tenant, then add them to the team. Will do the trick.

If it has expired already again then probably not. Those things I go through in the video are so that the MS backend sees that you are using it for developer purposes. You can try it, but I would say that it most likely won't let you.

If you can still get into the tenant itself, even though it has expired, then you can detach the domains you have in there. Then yes, just add them to a new tenant.

Unlikely, as the Microsoft metrics need to be done before it expires. You best bet here if you have performed the tasks is to log a service ticket with Microsoft requesting the renewal. I have had success with that personally and I know that others have too. Could work for you.

That tenant is now gone and there really won't be a way to recover it. You can try logging a service ticket with Microsoft on this but it is unlikely they will be able to help with that. It is probably too far gone. Those renewal activities should be done at least 2-3 weeks before it expires really. Sorry about that.

We fixed this today for another person in a similar circumstance. By purchasing an E3 Developer license it gave him access again into the tenant. The discounted purchase of an E3 for $8 per month is an option that Microsoft have in this situation. Worked for him, hopefully should work for you too. Keep us posted though.

Hi. If you haven't performed the tasks to keep the Microsoft metrics happy before it expires then it is unlikely that it will reactivate your E5 Dev subscription. You can however perform those tasks, then log a support ticket with Microsoft and request it. I have seen success there but it is not guaranteed. Give it a try though.

I never take peoples passwords etc. to do this type of thing. Definitely a security risk there. However, I can tell you that if your E5 tenant has gone past it's renewal date and has expired then it is very unlikely that you will get it back. You can try to log a support ticket, but that is a last resort option.

It should show as the additional Admin Center in the bottom left part of the main M365 Admin Center. If not, then occasionally you need to 'Show All' in the Admin Center list. Failing that, just navigate to admin.teams.microsoft.com and the Teams Admin Center will appear. Hope this helps.

You are right. It is very bad that Microsoft have restricted the creation of new E5 Developer Tenants to MPN subscribers only. If you haven't renewed already, and your tenant expires, then you won't be able to create a new one.
