When my husband sends me a link to share 365 with me, I click on it and this is the response I get - "You can't join with this account. Sign in with a different account to join this subscription. @@sweetkandee1582 the error message could be improved by providing more context. I'd recommend reaching out to support since there could be any number of issues that lead to this. For example, Microsoft has two different account types, work/school and consumer/personal. You might be trying to add a work/school account to a personal subscription. An account may also already be associated with another M365 subscription. These are just two potential issues that come to mind.

Microsoft has done an extremely poor job of explaining the relationship between accounts and the products within this new service "Microsoft 365". I suggest that you do a presentation that specifically addresses the question of the relationship between accounts, profiles, and users. Yes, I'm not sure that Microsoft actually thinks of "profiles" or "users" as resources. take these three key words "account", "profile", and "user", and define them. In that process of preparing your script, you will realize how challenging it is for users to understand what can, and more importantly, what can't be done with Microsoft's new service. (Maybe Microsoft will learn something in the process.)

One problem I have with subscriptions is the constant updates. Years ago I purchased Adobe Photo Shop, everything was fine. If a new version came out that had something you needed you would purchase the update. Then they went to the subscription model. Constant updates, new this, new that. New file structures you had to figure out and convert to. I wound up spending more time keeping up with software changes, than getting work done. Where did the function go that used to be here and so on. I think you get the point. I don't want to spend my time learning what is new. I have certain things I do in Word and Excel, and I don't want to spend a bunch of time figuring out how to do it with the new updates. I finally junked Photo Shop and went on ON1.

Exactly - sometimes I think the main reason for the updates is bc you have employees at Microsoft who wouldn't have a job otherwise. So many things are not necessary. It's like rearranging your room every week.

I have been using excel for more than 6 years and I have never needed to relearn anything? Microsoft usually support old features while adding new ones. If you choose to continue working in the same way you did a decade ago, it's still possible. You don't HAVE to learn the new features, but they are there if you need them. If you don't want those new features, just buy the 2019 version outside of a subscription model. Also, you are talking about Adobe. They are a different company with different ethics. You cannot compare the two. I understand your frustration with Adobe but you cannot assume all products will be the same.

I've been in IT since the 1990s. I'm up to 3:25. The world is changing piece is kinda hard to swallow in terms of Office. It doesn't really have competition, it is monopolistic. The subscription model was not one wanted by the end users, most of whom do not use 90% of features in office. The new features are generally disliked by the user base. Most for example want Word 2.0 - and why should they need 'monthly fixes?'. 'You're getting constant updates'.

I've always preferred Microsoft office software. It's user friendly and always relevant to variety of processes to complete any kind of Outlook, Word Processing, spreadsheets, or presentations. I think if you don't get 365 you need to realine your thinking we've used it for the past 10 years or so, so right from the off. For us, it saved us updating our server every 5 years and we now don't have one but have moved to one drive which is so much better. Since the lockdown, I have used Kevin's videos (which are brilliant) to move into using the rest of the 365 apps and that has changed the way we work. This makes total sense its fantastic value!

As a non techie-type who started on MAcs working largely with only Photoshop and Word back in the Early 1990s, then on to work in Offices with the stand alone versions, then back to Mac and Photoshop and Garageband..and then a Big Jump into teaching abroad where software is in other difficult languages., like Traditional Mandarin, & Arabic, nothing easy like the 3 i do read, write and speak. Suddenly everything was MS 365 office. Since then, I have never understood what the scope and sequence was. Originally I felt the same way. I generally HATE subscriptions. I like owning my items after careful intentional thought and budgeting. 365 is one of the few cases that I have come to accept and even LOVE. There are so many great products that you get in the yearly subscription. Also the consistent updates are fantastic. For instance the OneDrive sharing and collaboration is now an INTERGRAL part of our business.

I am starting to look at tutorial videos now because I am totally confused about what goes where. In the old days, I controlled my PC. I am one of those "older" users like Kevin's dad. My desktop is running XP and if it weren't for the fact that the system is no longer supported, I wouldn't be in the market for a laptop. I know the programs I've installed over the years (many aren't available anymore) like the back of my hand and produce amazing documents with them. The thought of learning a new system sickens my stomach. Older users like me are children of Depression Era babies. We just cannot wrap our heads around buying into a subscription plan for something we can outright own. It's like being tethered to a never ending lease plan....for life!

Since then I’ve used the 2000 version sparingly but it has served its purpose. When I recently tried to use the new Word I was shocked at how completely different it was from my 2000 version. I cannot even figure out how to save the document that I’ve created and now it is completely lost. I’m hoping one of your other tutorials will help me out. Thank you! Norris

For many years I purchased software from a vendor. I was one of the first subscribers to Office 365 and I now have 3 subscriptions. No other way to go if, for no other reason, all updates are automatically installed. Painless and it always works. BTW, I used to work at MS way back when.

I have been a subscriber since I switched to surface 5 years ago. I like and enjoy all the new features and constant updates. Most of all the free tutorials like this here, in KZbin. We want to know how to use new features. Love the dark mode. Saving PDF into Word to edit is a breeze. Lots of good values. Oh yes, 0ne Drive too is useful. Security has been upgraded too. I trust Microsoft.

I have Office 365, Office 2019 and Office 2003 Professional on my PC. I still prefer Office 2003 Professional. Word 2003 is so much better than the newer versions. It has no annoying ribbons surface. The personal menues, context menues and shortcuts are much easier to configure in 2003, and functions are much easier to find. Also finding and opening files was easier in the old versions. Editing personal menues is very hard in the new versions, editing personal context menues is not even possible anymore in Office 365 and 2019! Office 365 and 2019 don't have reliable WYSIWYG with documents of more than 30 pages and hyphenating, on a very fast Ryzen 7, 8 core, 32 GB memory PC. This is so disappointing and annoying. It's also disappointing that Microsoft has even after 40 years not integrated any good reveal code vison function as Wordperfect has for over 40 years already. Also the autosave function in Office is still really bad compared to Wordperfect. Microsoft has made Office "beautiful", in order to attract people to buy a subscription, but I need a program with which I can work efficiently on long documents on my PC, not a "beauty" which sends my data to an unknown cloud storage. After having tried the new programs for more than a year, I haven't found any useful function which wasn't there in 2003 already, except storing and printing as pdf, but this I get as freeware too. So I cancelled 365, use Outlook 2019, sometimes Word 2019, but mostly Word 2003.

I agree with you 100 %. Myself using 2007 version and it works fine. Office 365 seems like a bunch of stickers, images, presentation displays, and stuff you basicly dont really need that much. If you want to do fancy designs or so you dont use word or powerpoint for that. Same with photoshop. I purchased one time Clip studio, instead of subscribing to adobe, saved a bunch of money. Usually later if you decide to work on something specific your job offers you free subscriptions. The only thing worth buy would be this 1 terrabyte of onedrive space. Thats it

I recently started my own business and bought Microsoft 365 subscription because it had 1tb onedrive. We store all our drawings on the one drive and have made it as drawing server. Besides, there is outlook and other office apps.

Great job with the video. I decided to go all in on Microsoft for OS and Office solutions. Specifically Office 365 Business Premium for our productivity apps. Even with 20 years as an IT professional, I was never an Administrator. I had to quickly put on that hat as our estate planning business increased, along with hiring our newest hire, a Research Attorney. It all had to work. Correctly. I do have to say that the Microsoft support has been very good. I wouldn’t have done all of this any other way.

It sounds like Microsoft has added so many features to rope you in, but being retired now, I think it is really not necessary. However, I worry that I might have stored things that I would not be able to reach if I drop my subscription. These things like pictures, recordings of a father's history, etc. How do I know if those will or won't go away, if I drop Microsoft 365???

I have an older (CD) version of Office that I've been using for the last fifteen or more years, and it's even been updated by MS. It serves me well, and no complaints (I do a heck of a lot of writing and Powerpoint presentations). Unfortunately, MS have wormed their way into my world by throwing in things like Edge and One Drive, which have driven me nuts! I absolutely hate MS virtually taking over my computer by putting everything into One Drive, especially as I have my own filing system with everything I do, I want where I - not MS - want it. I have a twin drive system, each one a 2Terrabite Drive. I don't need Cloud storage, so why should I pay for it? I don't have family, and I certainly don't need all those extra nonsense apps that really just add complications and more ways to lose valuable work. Where I can do something simple e.g. dragging a picture or photo from one place to another, I can't do it in the usual way because One Drive won't let me. So for me, One Drive and Edge have been taken out of the equation! OK, my Office isn't smack bang up to date, but while there are little addon apps that I wouldn't mind having, I just see the bulk of it chasing money for the MS coffers!

​@@jaro101v Access isn't really made for the cloud afaik. Imo, you should try to avoid access whereever you can and start to use better solutions. As soon as your simple databases become a bit more complicated, you'll find a lot more value in sql and different programming or script languages. But even there you can take a look at microsoft visual studio ... You can also import .xls and newer files into most database types with the most languages today. In the end it still depends on what you want do with it.

Yes, Access works as well, although there's only a desktop app and no online equivalent. You can still upload Access files to OneDrive, but you'll need the app to open.

Hi Kevin! Thanks for the great video. I’m watching this to prep my interview tomorrow for a job related to O365 tech support. To answer you questions: 1. I agree that M365 family is a steal if i could share with 6 people. But currently I’m using the Office that came with the laptop i bought. 2. I’m a Chinese living in China, so there is another alternative called WPS. I could use it for free, but there are also subscription options for cloud storage and advanced features. 3. I think SaaS is the future and it makes sense to pay for what you use. Thanks again for the great video, and i think you are a great presenter as well.

Surely, depending on the final user's activity, the variety of the included options is quite impressive. The only idea of having automatically the keyword-sensitive bunch of the designs in powerpoint feels great. In the end, there is plenty of time being saved without continuously looking for free-stock images online for example.

Great video! I like "owning" software and not "renting" software. I believe this is the same reason why when Adobe released their subscription based model for Adobe Photoshop, a lot of customers were trying to find/buy Adobe Photoshop CS6 which is the last version that Adobe released on their Photoshop product which was a single payment and no re-occurring payments/subscription.. I try to avoid subscription based models for software regardless of the unlimited number of free updates. Depending on the price difference, I prefer purchasing the software. Obviously, if the price per month is something like $15/month and the purchase price is something like $600, I would probably subscribe (provided that it was easy cancellation). However, if the software was something like $200 or so, I would just purchase it and be done with it as opposed to paying per month even if certain months I don't use the software at all.

The part of 365 I like the most is the constant changes that I don't always want. Oh and having to worry whether or not some functionality will be compromised after one of the never ending series of updates is fun too. Maybe the best is not really knowing whether my actual files are being swept up and retained by microsoft in case the feds ever want to construe my activities as illegal or someone at microsoft wants to see if any sensitive or valuable information is there. Does microsoft access my files? If so is it for any nefarious purpose? I DON'T KNOW! WHAT FUN!

Really do feel that Microsoft's licensing is always more confusing than it needs to be. Having two E3's and E5's for me is just crazy, the whole Office E3 and Microsoft E3 I get but most get confused. And I don't get why they renamed Essentials and Premium, unless they think customers are shamed by the word 'Basic' so they'll upgrade.

My University has a partnership with Microsoft so that with my official University account I get access to Microsoft 365. I very rarely use it, so I might not continue my membership once I get my degree, but I haven't really thought about it.

Yeah, I know exactly what you are talking about. I unfortunately bought the suit before finding out my university had access to it and I could use it for free. I really like the onedrive though.

Amazing breakdown and has really helped in deciding if want to subscribe to 365. My only questions is regarding the family package. When it says up to 6 people, does that mean 6 different accounts can be created and used on multiple devices (1 person uses these functions on both their laptop and tablet which would only count as 1 family member) or just limited to 6 devices. What happens when the subscription runs out? What if I can't afford to renew? If I purchased it outright, it just keeps working. So there's no value in subscribing for me. And I need to be able to work offline. I may get the 2019 version, but the free alternatives (like Libre) have all I need, and are usually close enough to MS-compatible to not cause issues. I honestly think it's more of a business ploy than looking after customer needs; i.e. an attempt to condition customers to conform to Microsoft's needs.. There's nothing here that could not be provided with updates or separate services. Putting it all-in-one just pushes everyone into the same boat, whether they need the extras or not.

Thank you very much for explaining this to me, I used this product constantly while doing Technical Support working as a contract worker, I'm retired, but now thinking about going back into the workforce. I have so many versions of Office I really don't need the subscription, however I do need to learn the new version. I might visit a local college learn enough to function at an acceptable level, and continue working. Thank again for updating my Microsoft Office knowledge.

Kevin, another great video! I would love for you to cover: connecting an iPad to a Windows laptop. My child’s school issued iPads to all students. All work must be submitted through the iPad; however, it is difficult to type and edit papers on the small screen. Any other such tips would be helpful as well.

Great presentation, Kevin. One suggestion: Do you know how many Christians use Office 365? I suspect it may be in the millions. Yet, when I look up Bible in the image library, how many Bibles do I find? One. And that one appears because it pertains to a wedding. That's it. What are the chances that additional Bible images be added to the library? I love your presentations. Your voice is as clear as can be and your explanations are excellent. The subscription warning popped up in my computer and was struggling to decide to renew or just buy the one time Office. Luckily found your video and this is very helpful for folks like me who are from your Dad's time and we struggle for help and understanding on these new tech issues. Truly helped me decide on 365. Your Dad was right. We used to buy a new computer, and we would have to buy a CD of Microsoft Office. But when we had to buy a new computer that same CD would work again on the new computer. Microsoft just figured out a way to screw everyone out of their purchase, and forcing them to buy Microsoft again. That's all there is to it. You are trying to soften it up and make it seem like an improvement, when it is really just a plan to make customers buy the same product repeatedly, instead of paying once and using it forever.

I remember when Microsoft first introduced the subscription model for Office and was point blank against it / avoided it at all costs. Fast forward to 2021 and all my family are now using it! 😂 Credit to the MS devs as they've really stepped it up a notch.

Yes I subscribed last year after viewing one of your videos but not yet using it to its full extent. Need to start looking at tutorials And take full advantage. Specially when I travel… I’m like your dad at 71 years old I just want to buy it and it’s ALL mine. But, I came to the realization that ms365 is just like the oxygen in the air, it’s not really yours yet it sustains you- likewise ms365 sustains me professionally and like everything in life it comes with a value added cost.
