In many walks of life it is generally a good idea to 'always check your fly' to save for any mishaps! When fishing, and salmon fishing being no exception, we often get a nip at the fly when the fish doesn't take right or fully. Often this is just the fish being half hearted and is particularly true with fresh grilse. However sometimes it is because your fly has become tangled or damaged and so the fish can not take it properly. When this happens I often check the fly, this not only allows you to remedy any problems but also allows the fish time to get back to its lie. As you will see here, that is exactly what happened and checking the fly paid off.
