i noticed on google earth a lot of the tracks are still there hiden in forests and tree lines

Yes it is, I've explored quite a bit of the trackage up at the EBT and it is all still there

Is any work being done on the locomotives?

Not at the very moment they are doing a few inspections and tests on them though.

Once they are done with that I do believe they will move on to other things on the locomotives.
