In the GDR many of these awards did actually come with financial & material rewards as well. Distinguished workers, individually and collectively, were often rewarded with holidays, both within and outside the GDR, and sometimes even a new car. So it's not accurate to say people in the East 'only got medals'.

I have three boxes of medals, pins and assorted awards that I need to go through. With the help of your videos and book recommendations I should have it sorted in 5 or 6 years.... Keep up the good work

Can you advise on a reference for the order of wear for East German decorations and medals? I'm particularly interested in situations where an individual may have medals from mixed service, NVA service and subsequent service with the Kampfgruppen, for example.

Very good question! I know there is a official list of awards and their order of wear. If i can find it i'll post it on my Instagram.

Fascinating video...and I love the interest in civilian awards...can you share where you purchase your medals with the urkunde docs too? I'm looking for a reputable dealer for DDR purchases. Thanks from London!

Do you know of any good sources for research on DDR insignia and shoulder boards, I recently picked up a large lot of items and can't seem to find any goods sources for info to help me with identification.

The english Wikipedia article about the NVA tells you the basics on ranks, waffenfarbe etc. The German article Waffenfarbe (NVA) is even more detailed. Those are a good start! 🙂

@@MilitaryMonetary cheers, yeh I collect anything from ww1 and 2, lots of cold war stuff , and as my KZbin name suggests 'helmets' after xmas I think I will have about 33 or 34. I do my KZbin channel.in my garden museum/outbuilding, I'm not as professional as some channels, taking a more laid back approach. Hopefully you might check out some of my videos. I subbed your channel last week, so hopefully I can pick up some DDR collecting tips....cheers 🙂🙃🙃
