In this Daughter & Dad trip #18, we explore the East Hawdon Valley on a route marked with trappers tape, rock cairns or other trail sign like trods or cut branches.
We were fortunate to have the valley to ourselves, enjoyed a nice wee bivvy and got to see: Whio (Blue Duck), Kea, kakaruwai (South Island Bush Robin) and were kept awake at times by Kiwi and Ruru (Morepork).
#Tip18 of the trip - when venturing off clearly marked trails, do your research beforehand, have a map - hard copy and digital app and keep your eyes open for the signs in the environment.
Routes up tight river valleys make fast travel difficult and this trip was a hike rather than a trail run.
