This book is amazing. So many different themes and perspectives on not only the life one leads, but the life you want to pass on to others. Great for gaining perspective on life

I’m currently standing in front of my library wall where I have 11 different Steinbeck first editions I’ve collected over the past 10 years or so, trying to pick a favorite. Grapes Wayward Bus Moon Is Down Winter Charley Eden Mice and Men Pasture of Heaven Cannery Row Pippin IV It’s truly like picking a favorite child. Boils down to Grapes and Mice/Men. Common background theme is the plight of the migrant worker. Not to get political, but, as a country, it seems we refuse to recognize the value those hard working people add to our economy. We never pay them beyond hand-to-mouth subsistence.

To your point, I saw someone bring up Grapes of Wrath in a FB group about literature, and multiple people wrote it off as "communist propaganda". Crazy.

I read it in high-school and I still think of the story from time to time. I'm 42! It's mysteriously haunting and you will never forget it. Its so rich in detail!

Agree. I read it as a teenager and at 61, I’m starting to read it again. I think it was a bit hard to follow when I was younger. So I watched the James Dean (life story) movie and the East of Eden movie, which both were great for helping me get my head wrapped around the characters before embarking on another awesome read.

The 1981 TV film follows the story much more closely, and covers the entire book. It's available on DVD.

The Pearl, which I read in High School, will never leave me entirely. The 'curse' of finding something valuable is indeed one of the first, compelling themes I have encountered in all of Literature.

I know I’m really late, but what’s the deal with the end of this story? The last 100ish pages seem to be rushed, and I especially feel that the closing off of the Hamilton family storyline was odd

My favorite is Travels with Charley. My grandma had all of Stienbeck's and some Hemingway's on a shelf when I was a kid. East was the first one I picked up b/c it reminded me of Sunday school. I couldn't process everything back then. I understood a lot better after seeing the movie with James Dean. Definatley a wonderful story. Very relatable if you've got a sibling that's just better than you😂

@@Lifeonbooks I have 1939 first print of Grapes of Wrath. It's a NYC book club version. Not as valuable but still pretty cool for something I picked up for less than a dollar in a box of books.

@@Lifeonbooks pretty good shape, not stained or ripped or beat up. Nice enough to give to my mom a few Christmases ago. She's a big Steinbeck fan and was born in 1939. Wish I could remember the book club, I just remember it was NYC and thought it was strange that a book club would get their own print the same year it was put out. But it is the real deal, but when I researched it, it would have been worth a lot more had it not been printed exclusively for the club. BTW, I'm guessing this short popped up on KZbin suggestions because I watched Tobacco Road the other night.
