The notable work “Chronographia” of Michael Psellos (Psellus), prominent Byzantine Historian and Imperial Courtier to several Byzantine Emperors (11th century), is one of the best accounts and series of biographies from emperor Basil II to Nikephoros III. A unique and valuable source on the history of the 11th century Greek Byzantine Empire. Truly, a historic and academic treasure.

looking at the empire's map now, i gotta say it just had too amyn fronts with too many diverse enemies. so many resources were needed yet so few at hand, they needed to prioritize. diplomatic blunders did not help either. it does seem Basil II had the best substats of all macedonian emperors before him, plus enough power to actually do anything. truly a fascinating period for the romans.

I often see a lot of mapping videos disregarding that John I's reconquest of the eastern bank of the Danube. They always just show that he only retook Thrace. Nice to see that the Danube is shown to be Roman I'm a bit of a map nerd Those lands (formerly called Moesia Inferior & Scythia) were lost only in 986 when Basil nearly lost his life but also lost most of his army in a similar fashion to Nikephoros I in 811, at the Battle of Trajan's Gate I really like John I He was better than his uncle in a lot of ways. I feel like if he lived for another 10 years, maybe Syria & the Emirate of Aleppo get annexed into the Empire. But he did leave western Bulgaria unconquered & it allowed the Bulgars to regain their strength under Tsar Samuel Maybe we could've gotten a conquered Syria in a decade longer reign for John I. And then a fully conquered Bulgaria by the end of Basil's reign This is just me making up a fantasy at this point 😂
@Serapeum5 ай бұрын
Honestly, John I was the goat; if he had lived for ten more years, he'd definitely be as famous as Alexios Komnenos and Basil. John just seemed to be good at everything.

Good vid, awful initial Byzantine borders. It’s crazy to me how KZbinrs instead of historians are the ones who downplay Byzantium’s borders after the war in their own dedicated vids and ignore the fact the treaty with Peter restored the borders to those of 904 Emperor Constantine VII even mentions cities like Mesembria, Adrianople, Serres etc still being cities in the empire with command positions in his books with Imperio and Ceremoniss. Let alone the fact that he flat out points out Bulgaria no longer has land above the Danube which was lost to the Pechenegs who hindered Rus traders on their way to Mesembria. Bulgarian Empire mapping ruined mapping on this time period, it’s sad to see.

Why I fell this conquests like this was double edge sword think about it for sec sure from 960 to 1048 gived the Byzantine a huge boost and lot great chances & opportunity to expand how ever they abounded so much of things that saved them for years the defensive strategy for me the Byzantine in 750s was way better then 1040s what do I mean by that 1 the thematic system & tagmata worked closely 2 the conquests of Armenia was huge mistake rather then buffer vassal state the Byzantine annexed it given to much burden to defend it plus removing the Armenians from the home land to calicia created a calician Armenia Military aristocracy was sorta of tyrannical but the basil weaken them too much and created no domasticos of east and manu emperor after basil from civil aristocracy kept doing the same created weak neglected army and large mercenary 3 Armenia & antique was never that important even they lost them to turks they could retoke them in time What worst is losing central Anatolia the most important buffer land of Byzantine especially capadocia Sure it harsh semi desert land but it the most important area if it fall all lost 4 the bullkans was not that important anyway to me best solution is make deal with Bulgaria and split the borders like 1195 ad and make peace it worth it in 1081 ad why the Byzantine was in so much danger then 718 ad it because of Anatolia thr bullkans were never that stable to begin with in 1180 ad what was most important danger it was from Anatolia not the bullkans even with Manuel taking dalmatia and bosnia and Hungary as vassal state what have taken 15 years to make lost in year bella the third toke them and once u need them u find no ally in bullkans the serbs we not relaying on & can rebell at any moment the Byzantine got weaker The bullgarians were subjected how ever they were like serb & waiting for chance to break up the 2 brothers who rised the uprising we not even Bulgarians they just did for power only & bullgaria ruled with to break up then killed them once they didn't need them 5 Byzantine ego was too large in 1070s they didn't accept ap arsalan treaty before the battle they lost huge battle they didn't accept his peace terms after that Romanos 4 civil war Plus the generals already told him to abounded Armenia & go back to defensive strategy like the old days sure he will lost Armenia & antique but they could be retaking in time yet he refused
