I'm a little late to this, but what an excellent talk! 100% true compared with my experience with chronic pain and the journey through treating it. Biggest lesson I've learned after 7+ years: it's not one thing, it's everything. What you eat, how you sleep, what you allow to stress you and how you manage that stress; how much you exercise and HOW you exercise/move. How you interact with the people in your life, how you treat your condition(s), and your overall perspective on life. As a former car mechanic, I found the heat/car engine analogy spot on. One thing I've also found very true that wasn't specifically mentioned here is the cyclical nature between pain and stress. In my experience, days of high pain loads tend to cause additional psychological stress, which makes the pain worse, and so on and so on. Learning to break that cycle is critical, and seems to require the acceptance of the pain versus the need to fight it. It's a curious, perhaps even paradoxical, thing. Excellent talk, really enjoyed it. Thank you!

Try eating just short grain brown rice for 10 days and see how the stress level reduces.....this was normal practice in ancient times before receiving acupuncture and herbs.....whole grain short brown is the most balanced food, it should be soaked overnight and cooked until soft, and each mouthful chewed 70 times to mix as much saliva as possible with each mouthful, there is nothing more naturally healing than one's own saliva, normal healthy people should at least chew each mouthful 50 times to produce the necessary correct amount of saliva to digest the food completely, this chewing makes the meal take a long slow restful time, which is also essential for correct digestion, stress begins with indigestion from rushing food and not chewing enough, pay attention to to every mouthful, savour every mouthful with deep gratitude for the nourishment, and pay attention to the stomach and digestion and sit still for at least 15 minutes after eating just focusing of the stomach digesting the food, your best health depends on it.... SUN SIMIAO "First, modify the patient's diet and lifestyle and only then, if these do not effect a cure, treat with medicinals and acupuncture." "Doctors should first understand the cause of disease, then treat it with diet. Medicine should only be used if diet fails." "Whenever a great physician treats diseases, he has to be mentally calm and his disposition firm. He should not give way to wishes and desires, but has to develop first a marked attitude of compassion. He should commit himself firmly to the willingness to take the effort to save every living creature." "The body is the habitation of spirit (shen) and qi. As long as spirit and qi are there, the body is healthy and strong. As soon as spirit and qi scatter, the body dies. Therefore, if you wish to preserve yourself whole, first calm spirit and qi. Understand: qi is the mother of spirit; spirit is the son of qi. Only when qi and spirit are together can you live long and not die." Sun SiMiao, Visualization of Spirit and Refinement of Qi. Hippocrates; "LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE AND MEDICINE BE THY FOOD."

David, there's something called gut-brain axis. It's a network of neuro pathways and the old myth is that the brain send messages downwards to the rest of the body. Now we know that the sensory, organ and motor nerves send messages upwards to the brain. This means that the things we eat MATTER. From our food (and the way we eat: sat down or on the go, slowly and consciously or quick and watching TV and so on) we get the chemicals that control hormones including cortisol, the stress hormone. There is also an important element which should be part of our lives, mindfulness. I'll leave it here because I could go on forever but I hope this helps you grasp the importance of food regarding the stress response.

Is it possible to get an appointment with this dr? Western medicine is not helping me with my chronic pain and my dr. recommends that to look into Eastern medicine or alternative medicine. Any help is truly appreciated!
