My theory Ben gets martin beaten up, martin is hurt pretty bad, martin comes out of hospital and ben tries to blackmail him again, martin says no way, something is heard by callum who is incensed with ben ,callum tells ben there over unless ben changes ben agrees this is overheard by phil who finally finds out about the blackmail and who really hit him after he overhears ben confessing to callum. Phil disown ben, stacey goes further on the run and is caught by the police phil vows revenge and probably deserts ben for good this time after finding out he covered the whole thing up
