What happened to Ian in this episode was simply reality. Over the years he did absolutely nothing but getting rich on other people's misfortunes and made nothing but enemies. The moment you know he really hit the rock bottom was when he turned to him eternal arch-enemy Phil Mitchell for help. That's how you know Ian came to end of the line.
