I undesrtand you feel unconfortable about this topic. Kkk costume IS a cultural apropiation so catholics were blamed. (Since kkk IS deeply anglo-saxon, german and protestant rooted). Those costumes already existed in Spain since 9th century. Those hats were put on criminals and people captured by the inquisition as a sign of humilliarion, that Is why in holy week (penitence) this processions take place, with these costumes, as a sign of humilliarion and inferiority concerning the divine... It had nothing to do with racism or violence. Actually, catholizism always fostered the mixture of cultures and bloodlines, that IS why latino countries are mestizos (mixture of several "races") while the USA remained segregated. English colons would not mix theory Blood with other races, that IS why "bride ships" continuosly arrived from Europe. I Hope you learned something new out of the hegemonic american discourse!!

The capirotes are penitents and this clothing symbolising humiliation, yet I am not sure if the veil under the cone is trsditionally present or just to make their penances without showing themselves. If they want to make it as anonym persons it might be either about not to show themselves as a virtues person as their personal promotion or maybe it is not to shame themselves further, yet considering the action is about penance, it is probably to prevent personal promotion
