Orangemen wear bowler hats because the hats are associated with loyalty to Great Britain and are a symbol of authority that was worn by supervisors, an important role in the days when shipbuilding was a strong industry in Northern Ireland. Many who Joined the Orange Order & Apprentice Boys in there early days after formation were important men in Rank, Business, Politics, and Industry. These men became officers in their lodges and clubs, so somewhere along the line the Bowler hat along with the white gloves became apart of the dress code.
