@@guywelsh9589 No, it's not a simple as that. Sean was acutally 15 years old when he was killed, he joined Na Fianna when he was 13. Younger members of Na Fianna were under "Orders to Stay at Home" during the Rising, but being the bold young man he was he made his way to Jacobs anyway after Easter Monday where again he was told by McDonagh to go home, which he did and he arrived home safely. However he ventured out again to join in and help out where he could which was when he was shout. We all know the same situation at the Mendicity Institution where the boys (aged 12-16) were also ordered to go home, but decided they would stay and fight, which they did and very bravely for 3 days. I think we also have to take into account those times when even boys as young as 12 were falsifying their ages during WW1 to go overseas to fight (that does not make it right of course) and that the school leaving age at that time was 13 anyway. These young lads were far braver than many of us today.

My family is English as far back as the 1700's (as far back as we can trace). My family were humble stock from the Midlands and Home Counties. They played no part in the horrors imposed on Ireland and I am embarrassed to be associated with the British establishment that carried out this tragedy (and India, South Africa etc.). Please don't hate ordinary working class British people. WE PLAYED NO PART IN IT. I love the Irish even though some of you hate me for being born British. Your hatred of 'others' does not help the world one bit. I wish you all good health and good luck.

Ireland should be reunited & the English told to go home. What English? the descendants of those English who invaded Ireland, who still want to support & be English. Those who want to stay should be allowed to stay, but all Ireland should ruled by one Irish government. If Scotland can decide on it's future, all Ireland should be returned to the Irish people. Sovereignty for Ireland would be supported by all the UK commonwealth countries.

@@hanshanson9932 Not really Hans. Planting foreigners on land that belongs to others isn't sovereign land. It's stolen land. But that's been Britain's MO throughout its depraved history. I live in hope that one day Britain's worldwide atrocities and crimes against humanity will be addressed, e.g., the countless millions who died in India while the British squatters siphoned its wealth; in Australia where they slaughtered and stole land from First Nations peoples who lived on those lands for an estimate 60,000+ years; in Ireland where hundreds of thousands starved to death during the Great Famine while British gunboats protected food exports destined for the UK; in the Middle East; in Pakistan; in Canada; etc. And the skin-crawling list goes on and on. And just FYI, Ulster long predates NI. I'm from Ulster. Don't you dare appropriate my history to suit your bigotry.

Just to put the records straight here, Dev was not executed because he was "born in America". In fact he was just lucky with the timing of his arrest and his CM. Ask yourself why Tom Clarke (who was an American citizen) was executed if that was the case? The decision by the British Goverment to stop the executions had already been made by the time Dev was CM'd on 8th May, Connolly and Mac Diarmada were CM'd on 9th May but were still executed on the 12th May purely because like Tom Clarke they were signatories. Great song by the way!

A bloody revolution and subsequent civil war that didn't need to happen. The important point Ireland was Not a Colony, but a constituent part of the UK. It has therefore shown through the ballot box it wanted independence and therefore legal constitutional independence was coming, albeit slower than some would have preferred. Did the Easter rising rebels not realise they would be put down and the UK govt would quite reasonably insist on independence by constitutional means, rather than armed insurrection? all this at a time when English, Scots Welshmen were fighting alongside Irishmen (nationalist as well as loyalist) in truly global war for western civilisation? If the rebels had shown statesmanship an all 32 counties United Ireland could have had full Dominion (like Can Aus & NZ) status within a decade of 1916 (more than what was promised in the Govt of Ireland act), thereby avoiding a civil war and, more importantly, partition. Becoming a republic would have been possible later if wanted as indeed it was.

A peculiarly southern take on the consequences of the Easter rising is that Ireland somehow 'won' its freedom. Since when does a nation that fights against foreign aggression ends up being partitioned with 6 of its 32 cou ties remaining under British rule constitute a victory? This southern narrative has been nurtured since the 1920s by the very same ilk that were subsequently armed and financed by the British to suppress opposition to the treaty and are the very same ilk who run the place now, namely the landlords and blueshirts of FG and FF. Have any of you actually read the proclamation? Videos like this merely perpetuate the myth that Ireland won when in fact the enemies of the people were the victors and who lord over all ye as we speak. Its fucking pathetic
