Suggestion for a next fun video on TATW. One choke point, one Good army with 2 or 3 pikes units and 5 catapults and one Evil army with hundreds of cheap troops. Could be nice for a short video, don't you think guys? You gotta love artillery. :D

That was a good fight! I liked Rhun's early aggression, but oddly enough it petered out once the dwarves attacked the gates. You said his biggest mistake was that he didn't leave any infantry in reserve, but I actually think it was the fact that he didn't notice that only HALF of his walls were under attack. The dwarves were all attacking one gate-the other was unharmed. Rhun should've charged his general outside to attack their iron crossbows while they were taking the outer hill, which would've saved a ton of lives. Plus it would've deprived the dwarves of more bodies to throw into the final fight, and could've even silenced the catapult if he got lucky.

Ant36 Route It was a risk I think he had to take. There were still dwarven infantry outside, yes, but they were a distance away from their iron crossbows. Not to mention dwarves run slowly, so even if the opponent saw it coming he would've either been unable to save the crossbows, or had to run off the hill in order to save them, either of which Prevents that flanking fire. More likely than not the dwarven player's attention was at the front gate where he was pushing, so a bold tactic like a cav charge outside could've paid dividends. If he was smart about it, of course. Like Michael De Pauw said, that friendly fire was killer. He definitely melted some elite dwarves, but later on there were so few enemies in the blob he was targeting that he just kept hitting his own troops. He should've stopped firing a couple minutes earlier, saving lives and ammo. There are other little things that Apollo pointed out, like Rhun's poor cav micro in general, but he pretty much threw the battle with those two big mistakes.

I know this isn't about the video, but I remember that when I first started playing medieval 2 I came up with some weird (and unorthodox) strategies. For example: a "noob" square that leaves the back open for more line defense. Almost works, surprisingly.

These two were really evenly matched. The strategy on both sides was sound, but they didn't seem to know how to use their units to the fullest. Situational awareness is so important.

Another bad factor is that the pathfinding on this particular map is really iffy, especially outside the castle. It's not uncommon for units to refuse charging or moving, if they're standing in certain spots. The malfunctioning calvary charge at the start of the battle (2:45) is a good example of this.

It seems to mostly be on the outside of the castle. I know that units on the invading side are actually completely unable to retreat when they rout - The castle is located on an island, so units cannot reach the edges of the map. As a result, routing units just stand in place, and go into "Fighting to the Death" mode as soon as they're attacked. I don't know how bad it is on other maps, due to lack of experience with the mod, but I'm willing to bet that Cair Andros is one of the worst ones due to the nonstandard context of being an island fortress.

i had 20 units of iron guard fight 3 saurons. all but 1 soldier was fighting the saurons and he still wouldn't rout.. the stubbornness of the dwarves is impressive

(I n the first age, the dwarves were the only race that could withstand some dragons breath and be able to kill them) Smaug was basically a 1st age dragon, surprised them, also, most dragons at this point have died

Nice replay and commentary. Don't you think that the dwarves' general made a bad use of his pikeman ? I mean, he did not use them as a protective force against the ennemy cavalry which has done some damage to the dwarves first line, (slowing them and by this the ennemy get some nice kill and time) and crossbow too => Pikemans instead stayed in the back. And once those guys engage the fight they've been raped by missiles units. In this battle they were pretty useless. Dwarves have pretty nothing against cavalry, once you get units devoted for, why not using it ? I mean if they were so useless in the final siege against missile units, then why not positionning them in the flank of your crossbow or first line unit and make them progressing together. Use them as a defensive shield on flank ? Please let me know if i'm wrong and if there is a reason why the dwarven general did not do that. Thanks ! Peace !

Yeah changing the angle to make it farther away when its on the well yeah right. Because its impossible to pull a heavy ladder with troops on it. Its called exaggerating for effect genius. 2 ppl can easily hold the ladder down then people get on the ladder then you can't pull it up and even if you do which is practically impossible you're pulling the enemies towards you. And? Its still would be worth killing hundreds of your enemies through the ladder squashing them and you can't even pull it up in the first place so...
