Eastern Air Lines Promo Film - 1965

Eastern company film from 1965, and another nice period piece. Discusses the re-invention of the carrier during the mid '60s. A few clips of "Golden Falcon" 720s & 727s, DC-8 slideshow in the then brand new "Hockey Stick" livery, and some 727 footage near the end, also in the new livery. A must for Eastern fans! Those were the days. Eastern L-1011's Miami-Bogota in 3hrs 15minutes. Across the tropical Caribbean Sea to Seniorita land. Wow, what memories!!! Best times in my life. Regardless of the internal issues and ultimate demise of this iconic airline gotta say THANKS FOR THOSE GREAT MEMORIES EASTERN.

I was a flier of Eastern Airlines. The one fascination I had was the deployment of the "WhisperJet ". Eastern was the first airline that I flew on, and it was sad to see them shut down.

What wonderful memories! My first flight was on an Eastern Airlines DC-9-14 "Whisperjet" in August of 1968 from St. Louis Lambert Field to my hometown of Evansville, IN. Back then we would dress up to fly. I still remember walking out to the plane and walking up the air stairs that were self contained on the aircraft. The flight attendants were first class in appearance and genuinely welcomed you on board. I was 8 years old and at the end of the flight I got to go into the cockpit and sit on the pilots lap. I will never forget that moment. I was hooked on air travel forever. For the size of our city, we were served by Eastern for many years with DC-9-14s, DC-9-30's, Boeing 727-100 and 200's. With Martin 404s, Constellations, and Lockheed Electras prior to that. We could even fly direct on Eastern to Washington National Airport back then with one stop at Louisville, KY, also nonstop service to Atlanta. It was ALL wonderful and a first class experience, even in coach. While aviation is a lot safer now, we have certainly lost the customer care and service that MADE the experience so worthwhile. Thank you for sharing this great piece of history.

And classy too.My mom made me get a haircut,shirt and tie just to board on and even to visit the relatives who would meet us in San Juan. I'll never forget the wings I earned and Eastern logo playing cards and large sandwiches and large trays and silverware and model quality youthful stewardesses/air hosts with ritzy uniforms including gloves and Jackie Kennedy style hats!Miss that!

My mother was an FA for Eastern from '68-71. She loved it.

I think this classic era was THE very best when it came to air travel, both from the traveler and employee perspective. Back when I was younger, my Dad had a loyal customer when he worked at the post office in Barrington and her name was Mrs. Ruddick, and she lived on County Line Road in Barrington Hills. Her husband worked for United Airlines as a pilot for many years, and even though I never met her, she would frequently travel to Hawaii for the winter and United was her airline of choice to get her there because of her husband's standing as a pilot she would get the service that she expected. Mrs. Ruddick passed away sometime in the early 1990s; her husband passed away around 1986.

I flew Eastern from LA to Atlanta in 1979. I was surprised to have been put on an Air Canada L1011 that Eastern leased from Air Canada for a short term. Had great service and found that Atlanta was just three Jack Daniels and sodas away from LA.

Great video!! I remember when Eastern was going through their metamorphosis (I'm old!) during these times. Their theme song, "Number One To The Sun" (sung by Astrud Gilberto), was ranked the number one airline theme song of all time (United's original theme variation, "Fly The Friendly Skies of United", was ranked #2). Eastern truly was on the brink of extinction back in 1963...they did an incredible turnaround by 1965 and battled Delta at the humongous Atlanta hub (both Delta's and Eastern's largest hub). It was very sad to see their demise in 1991. BTW, I'm am a retired flight attendant (called "stewards" back in my day) from Continental Airlines.

I want to thank you for this. It's family history for me, since my father was one of Floyd Hall's bright young executive Veeps way back in the day, so I had a boy's side seat in First Class where I grew up watching EAL go from Captain Eddie's remnant to the modern airline most people later are still nostalgic about. I remember flying the company's first 727 on a company flight from MIA to DCA. It was still arrayed with the "flying signboard" livery, but not for long. Wow. What a treat for me personally and for everyone interested in this company's special history and the industry's history in general. Thanks again!

Hall's team was one of the finest assembled in the industry during that period and they, along with the hard work of Eastern's people, really did save the carrier in the mid 1960's. Men like Arthur Lewis, Todd Cole and Sam Higginbottom played major roles. People tend to skip over the Hall years at EAL, which is a shame. There was more to Eastern's history in the executive offices than Rickenbacker, Borman and Lorenzo.

Things have sure changed since then. Passengers were customers to be valued. Now they are treated like cattle.

How correct you are, Mr. Klaene! Then again; passengers have changed as well. Passengers once took pride in how they dressed. They'd wear their Sunday best on a weekday just to fly in coach. Today they'll stumble out of an arriving flight in first class wearing pajamas. Somewhere out there, there's an upset bovine that you likened the general public to a herd of cattle. People today are much worse than cattle. lol. But rest assured, your point is well taken. 👍

Great archive for Eastern Airlines. I remember the days of paper tickets. It was great being a kid of the 70s, the 727, DC9 via Eastern Airlines and Delta and the 737 we're the backbone of so many great bygone airlines. It was fun as a kid, but sad to see the ultimate demise of Eastern. As a young person, I could not imagine a world without Eastern. I do remember the bad labor management relations that utlimately befell the iconic airline. Those days, it concerned me in wanting to work for an airline.

My first flight was on an Eastern 727 (WhisperJet was written on the engine), out of Gainesville Fl in 1970... For a 5 year old boy, it just couldn't get any better ;-) (my father watched the plane taxi out, and as it spun around on the ramp, he got doused in kerosene, he said he never did get the smell out of those clothes ;-) Thanks for the memories :-)

My dad was the passenger services manager for Eastern at Miami international airport. I knew Art Lewis personally, he was a great man. Spent many hours talking to him about Eastern. Seeing Art here in his prime and seeing Eastern developing into the airline I grew up with was pretty cool. Whoever posted this video, thank you.

Growing up in the 70s I'd often see Concorde,Vickers VC-10s and many more fly over,that was near Heathrow mid 70s,I feel privileged to have seen those sites,,I go to aircraft museums ie Duxford it's great and watch much on KZbin,,a big Thank's to the folk behind this channel allowing us to enjoy the Golden age of travel,,, "Our past is gone but not forgotten"

In 1980 Eastern Airlines flew me from San Juan to start my adult life in Boston. I still hold on to the plain ticket to this day. I miss Eastern. Flew in it many times. I wish it would come back.

My father loved flying on Eastern Airlines. I liked it to. I loved the 727. I remember the yellow birds. They had a hell of a time with the 727 in the beginning but it turned out to be a fine machine.

Yellowbirds? That would be Northeast Airlines - they had the fleet of yellow 727’s. In 1972 they were acquired by Delta.

I worked for Dobbs house we catered most all airlines.A lot of Easterns&Delta had incredible food.I had perks like no other,Free food, Champagne,Milk,Orange juice chips,They threw it away...We weren't supposed to take it.... so I wud stop truck and hide it...The Nice HOT.. white washcloths gave them to whole family.Either Eastern or Delta had this stuffed chicken to die for,no restaurant has ever had anything close.

Aaaww what a moving docu - My mom worked for Eastern in the 70s in Jamaica and they were back then just as relevant as todays Jet Blue or AA to the island. The 727-100 "Whisperjet" was their main aircraft used to commute between Kingston and Miami. I was lucky to fly with them on a DC-8 from MIA to JFK as kid, first class of course. They indeed had an own spirit similar to Pan Am.

My first flight was on Eastern. New York JFK to Ft.Lauderdale International on a MD80. On the way back.....A300 Whisperjet. A huge difference in size. I had no idea the size of a plane could vary so much.It was 1982 and I was 15. I know a lot more about planes now.

At about 20:16 in today's modern era you can just about forget being served this kind of fare on any U.S. airline. Except for maybe the international carriers like Air France, Cathay Pacific, KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa on business and first class.

The training for the stewardesses was so thorough and they seemed so proud of their jobs. It was viewed as a great opportunity for a young woman back then. Of course, in those days they werent getting assaulted by passengers in-flight.

Back when REAL jets where used - noisy, smoky, and inefficient. That's real flying! Unfortunately, I never got a chance to fly on those old beautiful beasts. :( My dad I believe got a model of an Eastern Whisperjet for Christmas when he was a kid. I think he still has it in a box somewhere... :)

The airline passengers in this documentary would be shocked today on a domestic flight.A Coke and peanuts are about it.I was an aircraft mechanic at Robins AFB when Eastern capitulated and we picked up probably 500 maintenance personnel from Eastern.In the end,the company really screwed over the folks we got.Still I hate to see once great American companies fade away.

The term referred only to interior cabin noise. The tri-jet 727 was the first American airliner to have its engines in the rear. This made it quieter on the inside than earlier jet aircraft which had their four engines mounted on the wings.

Quieter on the inside, depending on where you were seated of course. I recall a Disney vacation my parents took me on in the early 70's. Being smokers, they (and me of course) were seated in the rear of the cabin. Pretty raucous back there

My Dad flew for Eastern out of ATL from about 1952 till 1984 when he turned 60. I flew with him on his last flight LA-Alt ( he didn’t know I was going to be there). I have a VHS tape of his last flight that I took with him and his crew, and then at his retirement ceremony at the ATL airport. I have so many memories of flying on EAL , once when I flew by myself to see my aunt,uncles and grandparents in Houston TX.. I was about 7 years old. I flew them 1978 from ATL to Fort Lauderdale as my bride and I started our married live in FL. Our last flight was ATL to Puerto Vallarta MX in about 1984 for a trip I had earned. Probably my craziest trip was from ATL to Daytona Beach Fl, I was sitting first class (due to passes) and had an empty seat next to me, I ask if a fraternity brother setting in coach could be upgraded,(which happened). We had 2-3 JD/coke before we took off. The ladies took VERY GOOD care of us. Luckily younger brothers were there and they picked us up at the airport (cause we were in NO CONDITION) I do miss Robert R. Suttles Fellow. KE and friend gone too soon 😢
