They're the best. Currently fighting off house sparrows this year unfortunately, but they're up for it

Great video from a bluebird landlord myself.I put up 4 houses that i built 4 the blues and they use them and i get 2 or 3 broods yearly.I place dried mealworms 4 them in a separate place and some on my platform where they can socialize with other songbirds.H2o is a big help as they REALLY love H2o.East central Arkansas. 😊

The dancing bears are cute and chimney roof are so cute! We've put a bird house out just like that size... How long did it take for yours to get inhabited?

Thank you! So... it drew a lot of interest right away, but house sparrows inhabited it initially. After doing a lot of research, I learned that house sparrows are invasive and actually kill our native bluebirds and native chickadees. I was passive until I found a dead bluebird in my yard (that the house sparrows in this box killed), so I decided to help out our native species and control population of house sparrows on my property. I humanely (and legally) dispatched the HOSP pair and bluebirds took over the box almost immediately. Since, I've had several generations of bluebirds in three years and continue to help them by fighting the good fight against house sparrows. www.sialis.org is a helpful resource. I'm also happy to answer and questions!

When we put our first box up, we installed it , went inside for lunch ,after lunch we looked outside and it was claimed by a bluebird -so about an hour. Now we have three boxes. 😊

@@MFrazier55 Interesting! I see bluebirds in my yard and this area daily...Earlier in the spring I'd sometimes see 20 individuals in our yard! (Which is what prompted me to get a nesting box...) I noticed yesterday that some of the ones feeding in our yard were fledgling too 😍 The box we put out hasn't been claimed, although I've seen bluebirds check it out on dif occassions. Idk if we put it out too late in the season or what (we live in se tx and I put it out like mid-late April I guess). Any suggestions?

@@ChoctawNawtic4 They could be happy with wherever their nest is, but always a possibility for a mid season move-in. Likely, they'll keep scouting it out and claim it over the winter and start new there in the spring. I would recommend learning about how to use a Van Ert trap and monitor the box in case house sparrows try to claim it. A zero tolerance towards house sparrows is the only way to help our native birds. I have tree swallows and chickadees in my boxes as well. Good luck!

@@MFrazier55 Thank you! Tbh I have never really seen house sparrows around here thankfully. I'm also wondering if they are at all deterred that we mounted the box under the eave of the shed..was reading that the males like to perch on the top of the box to attract females and that's not possible there, but it's a good protected spot.
