I happened to be there that day as I was supposed to cater that flight when I was working for Marriott in-flight kitchen, I remember the two F/As were escorted into operations looking somewhat in shock and soaking wet and cold with blankets wrapped over their heads. We went back to the kitchen with the supplies and meals for another flight.

I was there that day. The rainstorm was massive. Northeast flights diverted to PBI.

1972 wasn't a good year for Eastern in Florida, two aircraft crashed, this DC-9-31 (Flight 346) and a new L-1011 (Flight 401) both due to pilot error.

According to the NTSB, there were only 6 passengers on board (which I guess you see all six there at the end). And 4 crew, so 10 on board. The plane was only coming from Miami and was to go on to Cleveland. NTSB blamed pilot error due to poor decision making, failed to follow approved procedures, and landed without receiving clearance. Weather was below legal minimums to land.

Any landing where you can walk away is a good landing; any landing you can use the plane again is an excellent landing. So this was a good landing!

Eastern had another incident like this with a DC-9 in the late 1980s, it was in the Florida panhandle, I think either Pensacola or Tallahassee.

Not enough information, please post the date... judging by the north east yellow bird color scheme, I would guess 1971....or so... did everyone survive? was it pilot error?... It looks as if the landing gear did not come down....and they. slammed down hard causing the tail to separate and fuel to ignite.... the engines fell down to the ground because of the fire.... thank you for the video thought it shows Ft Lauderdale airport early 1970s!!!!

Pilot error. Most likely slammed onto the runway upon landing.
