Eastern Sierra Part 2: Alabama Hills, Ancient Bristlecone Forest Hike, RAV4 Overlanding, Highway 395

This is Part II of our Eastern Sierra trip. We begin this video in the Alabama Hills, then head up Hwy 395 to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. We continued up to Lake Crowley, then found a campsite in the forest.

Hi! We generally avoid sharing exact coordinates, but there are so many campsites in these areas, you will have no trouble finding something awesome. Part of the fun is searching around for a good spot anyway. We generally find campsites on the eastern side of Hwy 395, in the area across from June Lake, and also across from the Mammoth area.

Awesome! Did you have to replace the factory side rails of the TRD Off-road to mount the tent? Curious whether the ones that come standard will support the rack/skycamp mini

We actually kept the factory side rails on the TRD, but added a FrontRunner platform rack attached to the rails. The tent, awning, and recovery boards all attach to our FrontRunner rack. The stock crossbars may support a tent, though we prefer using a more solid platform system.

@@LunarLanderXplor Really appreciate it! For some reason none of the dealers we've spoken with could quote the weight-bearing capability of the side rails. We're definitely going to upgrade the crossbars to support the skycamp mini. Great channel!

There are lots of free camping locations in the Eastern Sierra! Much of the land is National Forest, and generally dispersed camping is allowed. Keep in mind there is no water, no trash cans, and generally a network of rough forest roads throughout the forest to access any camp locations.

The rooftop tent is wonderful. We have spent over 40nights in the tent over the last year and a half. There are many different types of rooftop tents at different price points. We chose a hardshell tent for quicker set up & better aerodynamics. This tent is from ikamper: www.ikamper.com/products/skycamp-mini/

We do not! Many long-distance "overlanders" do bring extra gas, but we plan our routes & always ensure we'll be able to make it to a gas station. We do, however, bring a lot of extra water.
