IDAHO FALLS - Lori Vallow Daybell’s brother and uncle are releasing a podcast and book to “fill the holes in a case that doesn’t make any sense.”
Adam Cox and Rex Conner have been working on “Tylee and JJ’s Silver Linings,” a 10-episode podcast, which will be available Friday. They aim to have a self-published book ready by the time Daybell is sentenced on July 31.
“There are a lot of people who have different opinions about this case,” Cox, Daybell’s brother, tells EastIdahoNews.com. “This is a story and a case that doesn’t make any sense (but) there are so many people at different levels of pain that we would like to just try to help those going through that.”
A jury found Daybell guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of her children, Joshua “JJ” Vallow and Tylee Ryan, and conspiracy to commit the murder of Tammy Daybell, her husband Chad Daybell’s then-wife. She also faces conspiracy to commit murder charges in Arizona for the death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, and the attempted killing of her former nephew-in-law, Brandon Boudreaux.
Cox has not spoken publicly since the verdict and has not talked to his sister in nearly four years. He and Charles Vallow were concerned for her mental well-being and wanted to get her help when Alex Cox, Lori and Adam’s brother, shot and killed Vallow on July 11, 2019.
“Two days later, I was driving to Tucson to my friend’s house … and I said to him, ‘Something weird is going on. I haven’t heard from Charles,'” Cox recalls. “It wasn’t like him not to text or call or anything. And so my friend said, ‘What’s his name?’ I said, ‘His name is Charles Vallow.’ He gets on his computer and types ‘Charles Vallow’ and (a news story) said that Charles Vallow was shot and killed by his brother-in-law.”
Cox remembers “crying hysterically” and getting a knot in his stomach. He drove to his parents’ house and says there was a “huge argument” because they were supporting Lori and Alex at the time.
“When the kids went missing … I had tried to talk to my family but they’d cut me off completely,” Cox says. “My first instinct when I heard they were missing was that the kids were dead. I told that to Rex, I told that to everybody because there’s no way they’re alive; otherwise, Lori would produce them.”
The series of events caused a fracture in Cox’s family. Alex Cox died in Dec. 2019 and after JJ and Tylee’s remains were found buried on Chad Daybell’s property in June 2020, Conner felt it was time to try and heal as much damage as possible.
“Rex called me and said, ‘I think it’s time that we go to your mom’s house, have a sit-down, and I’ll be there to mediate,” Cox says. “That was a very emotional day. A lot of feelings were said. … I told my mom and dad, ‘I forgive you. Let’s try to move forward.’ So over the last two years, I’ve been going to their house on Sundays to eat dinner.”
Conner received some healing by attending parts of his niece’s trial with his daughters in Boise this spring. He says he gained a greater appreciation for everyone involved in the case - from the prosecutors to defense attorneys and the judge, jury and media.
“We’re all united in finding justice for the victims of this tragedy. It’s so uniting. We don’t care what other people’s politics are or their stance on social issues of the day. We’re all united in wanting justice for these victims. That’s a silver lining. I love that,” Conner says.
Conner says prosecutors asked him to write a letter to Judge Steven Boyce offering his opinion of what type of sentence would be appropriate for Daybell. He says he was candid in expressing his thoughts.
“I said as someone who has known and loved Lori since the day she was born, it’s painful for me to say this, but I don’t believe she can be rehabilitated,” Conner says. “So I would be concerned about her being around anyone outside of prison at any point in her life. … I was talking straight to the judge saying, ‘This is the best I can do to tell you my own feelings.’ We wouldn’t know how to handle it if she were free amongst people and to be in her presence or to have the possibility of crossing her - that’s just not something we want to deal with.”

He does indeed when you listen to it in a vacuum. But when you realize....... - he was the last person to talk to Charles minutes before the murder, having been flown in at his expense to help him with Lori - both him and Charles suspected Alex and Lori were up to something -Charles suddenly stops responding to texts and calls -Adam tells his wife on the same day that he believed Lori and Alex had done something to Charles - So he leaves for Tuscon to "hang out" with friends - alleges he found out about the murder when his friend googled Charles 3 days later -tells his wife he is sure Lori and Alex murdered Charles -never contacts police or the media or anyone to share his info and suspicions -the call we heard took place one whole month after the murder and only when the police contacted him -Finally, he lies on other podcasts saying it was him who called police 3 months later. ........this might change your perspective about his role.

WEll, Lori's mother and sister didn't seem to care much at all about Tylee or JJ. They did not even NOTICE that Tylee was MISSING. THAT is how much they were in contact with her in the normal course of life. And remember, just like Lori, they both felt that only bad people weren't THIN. Tylee wasn't thin. Something that Lori hounded her about constantly...while never buying food (because she didn't want food around her...as she didn't want to be tempted to eat), so Tylee had live by buying cheap fast food, notorious for low nutrition and high calorie. Both Tylee's grandmother and aunt shared Lori's views about Tylee being weak and inferior because she wasn't super thin, The family eating disorder issue was so huge that the eldest sister starved herself to 60lbs, and her parents refused to let her get psychiatric treatment. She died.(or Alex killed her...there is a great deal of evidence that this was set up by the family to happen. Lori was following family patterns.) The mother, at the family dinner table, would chew her food and then spit it out on her plate, in front of everyone...saying she didn't need to swallow. Lori claimed that her new powers meant she no longer needed to eat.

Lori's cousin said that the father of Lori's family - who seems to have been sexually abusive - declared that only thin, attractive people were good or worth while. He paid for Lori to have breast implants. Which is just so sick. Tylee was just lovely, and it was said that although she didn't want to go to Idaho, and didn't have to...she refused to let JJ go on his own, because she was so concerned for him. @@MortgageGirl7Maybe they feel that way because - from a reading of their text exchanges - Adam went soft about following through with Charles’ plan to confront Lori together. IIRC, Adam was to have met up with Charles at Lori’s house that morning, but he lost his courage and told Charles ‘Sorry, I’m not coming’. Charles was on his own, and was killed.

@cherylbutler2452 she literally told him she could kill him. In my experience with women and domestic violence and their mqle siblings who carry guns-you meet them in public. JJ didn't need a ride to school. Charles was obviously still in love with Lori and was desperate to see her to see if there was any little spark left. I'm done with Lori.

I haven't listened to the entire interview yet - but why are no questions asked about her surviving son, Colby. He has really been on my heart. It's a horrible thing to know that your Mother, who you have loved always, has murdered your siblings. It makes me so sad just thinking about it. It seems everyone forgets Colby and I know he has been through so much.

Thank you for your continuing, and always excellent, coverage . I will definitely be listening to the podcast tomorrow. -As soon as the kid's missing poster was shown on the news, and that Lori and Chad were in Hawaii, I knew that the children were dead. Thinking that was such a sickening feeling. It is so very telling to hear that Adam felt the same way.

False. Summer and Adam ultimately came to their senses and sounded like they had normal reactions. But Summer completely bought into Lori’s mission and was complicit in Charles’ murder. Its all in Summer’s texts with Lori (“I’ll kill him myself.” Said Summer to Lori). And Adam did Charles dirty. Adam was NOT involved in Charles or any murders or planning, but he double-crossed Charles and fed info to Janis n Summer (who gave to Lori), and Adam left town after texting a man knowing something terrible is likely about to happen. I could go on and on.

Having a murderer in my own family, it is a trauma you never overcome. On one side you still feel love for the person and it’s hard to separate their crime from the person you loved. It’s hard enough to see it in media and read or hear about heinous crimes, it’s doubly difficult when it’s a family member who did it. It’s also hard to deal with people knowing your relative did something heinous and they automatically judge you. It’s like they feel your whole family is evil or that you could have done something to prevent it, or even oddly that you somehow knew that person was capable of it.

I agree with Adam, "You are never going to make sense of this". Yet, for families with similar dynamics, or even individuals with some of these mental health challenges, a book might be a great starter to open mental health dialogues that may save someone in the future. Cults are not going away.....religious beliefs in demons are not going away. Hopefully, researchers may also appreciate the up close revelations of the realities and consequences of these behaviors and beliefs. I have to say, so many family members are so eloquent....such a dichotomy...Best Regards to all.

I had heard the Adam Cox telephone call during the trial and said to myself, 'there is the sanest of the whole bunch' and it was amazing to hear his take on the whole thing. I am curious if there was any apology given to Adam by his parents after the Lori Daybell trial or if they still keep him at a distance as being 'dark' in their own estimation. 'Trying to get her help' meant you were against her and you were dark.

Evil lived in the space that separated Adam from his family. Rex was right to help Adam move forward and build a new relationship with them. The fact that Adam was able to find forgiveness for them is a gift he gave himself and it forever destroyed the evil that came between them. I pray this family and all the families that fell victim to these villains are able to find a away to let some measure of healing begin so they can move forward from this nightmare no one deserved.

Wow, I remember hearing all of this in the trial. It’s hard when you have a parent or in your case, parents who do not want to see the truth and try to convince everyone else they’re crazy when a family member speaks out especially about a homicide. You were courageous to speak up, and to stay true as a critical thinker, and the truth teller. 11:03

I think we all know the answer to this question. We all know the family is where Lori grew up to be the person she is. Adam and some others in the family are very strong as denial is a strong component in these kinds of families. Living in Truth isn’t that common I think. I know a similar family and they create their own reality in their minds and they live in denial and think that only their family really matters.

l listened to Annie Cushing's KZbin channel again. There he and Charles are texting back and forward about Alex Cox being at Lori Vallow's house, they say something is going on. But Adam Cox is only asking about why Alex avoding hım etc. making it all about himself, not Charles. And he didn't say anything about or texting and saying Charles to be careful anything like that. Even it was Charles who had somehow paid for Adam's flight. Adam was in Phoenix too. He didn't tell Charles to be careful. At the following text messages he told him about his plans to meet his son. Charles's last text to him was: do what you up to or something like that. He could have told Charles not to go into Lori's house alone, and wait for him to accompany him. Now he is revising his story... Too sad.
