This was made as a final project in one of my University courses. This had quite a few restrictions which did screw up my usual workflow, but overall I'm happy how this turned out.
The restrictions were:
-Must use 1-4 Tal-Noisemaker synths. No other synth was allowed (meaning I couldn't use SurgeXT, my preferred synth). I will admit I did end up using 9 Tal-Noisemakers but I checked and it was fine to go over the 4 limit.
-Must sample 1-4 things from a song used in a previous assignment. The specific song is "Slow Down” by Jessica Childress if you're wondering. Likely the only notable thing you'll be able to hear is the "Clap your hands" phrase as the other samples I used are the drums, which are combined with other things and with a bunch of effects added.
-Must use 1-4 recordings made by me. This is something I haven't really done before so it was a bit challenging to do. The specific recordings were me hitting my water bottle (used for the impact at the start) and slamming my desk (same recording, used for the kick), tap water (used for a hi hat), me saying "Just Like That" (I guess this is a voice reveal for this channel however, I've used my voice since 2018 on my other channel) and many samples of a couple pianos I have access to (no I'm not a piano player, I recorded all notes/chords I needed and manually arranged them. I might sample one of the pianos at some point cause despite my phone microphone being... shit... the high notes still sounded really good)
Another restriction I don't normally have is how there was a time limit here. I needed to get this done, including mixing, before the semester was up. Despite this I still managed to get everything done that I wanted. Working under time pressure is definitely a bit interesting but it can force you do get stiff done which is a nice upside. The second drop definitely suffered due to time pressure however, which is a bit unfortunate. I'm still happy with how this turned out though
The name "Night Life" is a bit of a last minute thing. I needed a name for the song but I didn't actually make this with a name in mind. I tend to give songs names either at the start of working on them (like Bubbles) or after it's finished (like this one). I didn't have any idea what to call it. Some other names I though of were related to something completely different, mainly "Prism" and "Spectrum". I liked these names but they didn't really feel like they fit the song that well. "Night Life" was another idea inspired by night clubs n stuff which I felt could fit the song so that's what I eventually settled on.
I was gonna do an original pixelart for this but it wasn't turning out how I wanted at all, so to avoid another Into The Abyss situation I've reused City Storm instead, slightly modified.
I now have a goal to try make a hardcore song to fit every pixelart I've made. Currently Fire has Hurricane, Tree has 88 and now City Storm has this. I imagine the hardest one would be Desert Cliffs, but that could also lead to a cool Hardcore Desert hybrid
