Modern web browsers are effectively their own operating system now. Really heavyweight, really slow, really terrible operating systems. Did you know there's an entire standard for your web browser to use VR goggles? There's also one for using Bluetooth, USB, Xbox 360 controllers, etc. Has any web developer drafting these standards stopped to ask: does _anyone_ want a web page to do this? I did a back-of-the-napkin calculation: W3C, the organization responsible for web standards, has written about _11 million words_ worth of standards, and that is only counting the actual, de jure standards, not commonly-used extensions or recommended drafts or anything. You could fit the latest standard for (the famously convoluted and feature-creep-prone) C++ _and_ War and Peace into that many words, and have room to spare. It really doesn't help either that Google effectively has a monopoly on how the web looks and feels now, since it's so impossible to make a new web browser from the ground-up that people have just been forking Chromium. The closest "competitor" to Chrome is Firefox, and Mozilla would rather lay off all their competent engineers and pat themselves on the back for evangelizing Rust to non-engineers than keep up with Google.

I think that people misunderstand the "value your privacy" statement. It doesn't mean that they will make sure your privacy is safe, it means that they understand the price value of it which usually leads to them happily selling it to someone. Also, anyone who understand browsers and how websites work, would never use it as their main browser.

You're not at all wrong, but there should definitely also be attention drawn to the manipulative practice of implying that they keep your data safe. When they say they "value your privacy", they're not directly lying, but it can be taken very similarly to somebody saying they value you, or otherwise, they care about you, and the connotation behind that is fairly positive; "this person values me, that means they're fond of me (or any other positive takeaway)". So naturally, one who doesn't look farther than surface level would interpret "we value your privacy" as just corporate talk for "we keep your stuff safe", when in actuality, they're collecting your data for their own purposes. Are they lying? No. Does that mean that their statement isn't inherently deceitful? Also no. For them to feel the need to incorporate a statement as double-faced as that as a big part of their entire brand image should be a big, red, blaring alarm to not trust that browser

Integrated manual ad block feature, tiny resource-light browser for low end devices, integrated TTS... But just being good doesn't win you the browser war -- you have to be the one that sets the page compatibility standards! The true idealistic successor of "old Opera" is Vivaldi. The only browser with an engine whose features aren't dictated by Google -- Firefox.

@@MaquiaveoNose this doesn't really say a lot about the opera themselves tho, they use affiliate links, where they sponsor someone and if someone uses their link to download opera they get paid, it's significantly more likely that that's where that came from then opera themselves, it is a risk created by using affiliate marketing for a software tho Good Game Empire is another good example of this despite being a legit company their affiliate advertising program means that you frequently end up getting a good games empire shortcut (which leads to the actual game) when you get malware

I am slightly concerned about my privacy now, but I still like Opera because it doesn't make my pc heat or slow down as much as when I use edge or chrome, the ad block works just fine for me (except when sites like KZbin want it off), hey, why you you guys hate the keyboard sounds? me and my viewers find it satisfying!!! I already turned off whoosh sounds so that's no problem for me, the design doesn't bother me, also nobody mentioned that almost all browsers actually already have some kind of miniplayer (right click the video twice to enable picture to picture) but I prefer opera's since it's easier to use, I've known the vpn isn't really a vpn for a while, but it still encrypts and protects my data. I can't pay for a good vpn yet, so I'm fine with opera's fake vpn. The video only said it's a proxy service that tanks the network service, but it still does a good enough job of protecting my privacy for my standards.

This. everything else in the video was fine but the rant about "Oh the UI and path finding features just plainly suck >:( blablablabla" just had me sitting there like Some people have multiple expansive projects going on. In general just more than 3 tabs open at a time, the sidebar for me is genius, most of its extension features i dont use, cause dedicated Twitter or Messenger or Instagram just works better But my ability to essentially have multiple browser windows open in a single browser window is a life saver, i have a side bar section dedicated to every streaming service i use and for those without a "My list feature" a tab for every series i wanna watch so i cant forget about them when they are just sitting in a folder in my bookmarks, another for shopping and gifts n stuff, one for general use, and one dedicated to youtube videos that i use for tutorials and the like. I am a messy broswer user and i found out i have 100+ tabs open, without the ability to segment them i would have 100 tabs in a single tab bar. And the aesthetics customization is pretty neat, i like that it can play artificial sounds of soft keyboard presses

I've been considering switching back to firefox, partly cause I don't use 99% of the features in Opera GX and I thought I was noticing performance hits I didn't have before. Personally, I like the clicky sounds, but they aren't enough to justify me using the browser when I honestly just enjoy firefox's simplicity a lot more. Not to mention the privacy and security it provides and how transparent they are. I find myself aggravated everytime Opera touts an update, as it just feels so corporate, like they want me to buy something. As a bonus, the firefox logo is super badass.

I think this is an important video in that it makes people aware of the possible dangers/downsides of using Opera, but it also doesn't address why people actually want to use it. The sidebar is an absolute game changer for me, as well as the different contexts it provides. I get to have a "home" workspace where I keep all my emails open, then a "fun" workspace where I chill, a "videos" workspace where I keep the lists of videos I want to watch... And the frequently accessed stuff, like messaging services is always accessible on any space. For someone who uses a lot of tabs like me this is a HUGE benefit. You've convinced me that dropping Opera is a good idea, but not shown me any other software that would provide similar benefits. Could I get stuff like sidebar workspaces with chrome add-ons?

Opera GX was advertized to me a while ago as a browser with low maintinance and good features. When I lowered the performances on Opera GX I saw little to no change for the performance. I ended up just going back to chrome as it clearly was missleading.

I stopped using Opera GX Christmas of last year, and the reason I uninstalled it was around December of 2023, for some reason weird dark pixels started showing up for some reason while using Opera GX, now this pixels always showed up either while clicking into a website, or signing in my accounts, the biggest red flag and what made me uninstalled it was when I made my Window Security very strict, the moment I did that and the day following, it kept on warning me about the OperaGX file on my system. Very recently, 6 months after uninstalling Opera GX, I just found out that there were still Opera GX files hiding, and it was storing and making new temp files with who knows what.

I will say, having used waterfox a bunch, having a screenshot tool built into the browser can be really handy cause it can capture certain html elements. I ditched GX because of the performance and privacy issues, but the criticisms you make in this video don't really seem fair. A lot of these things are completely subjective, like I really liked the UI and sounds. If you don't like them then just turn them off, a lot of them aren't even enabled by default, so you intentionally turned on a feature you didn't want just to complain about it. There's really only one non-trivial feature that I liked, and it was the workspaces, which let you have multiple different instances running from the same window, but there's other features that clearly have a use for someone, even if I didn't use them. The GX corner has genuine use. Yes, opening steam shows more information about *steam* games, but the GX corner thingy is an aggregator, it shows things that are from not steam. It's not meant to have much information, just enough for you to tell if you're interested, and if you are, you can look up more info yourself (like on steam for example). Again, if you don't like it, then just turn it off. Half the things you talk about are features in chrome and firefox too. You can pin websites on the new tab page, they even get pinned to the exact same spot as in opera, right below the search bar. Adblockers not working very well is literally just a chromium thing. Tracking general location and pages seen is standard practice (I LOVE CAPITALISM!!!!!!!!), and the rest of the features are just built-in extensions.The game widgets aren't even a new thing, you've been able to install games as extensions on nearly any browser for the longest time and if you don't like them, get this, just don't install them.Some people want a little sqare in the corner that shows the weather, or time, or just matrix letters falling. Some people want websites pinned to their sidebar. Valid criticisms are things like "the performance is trash" and "it gives your information to the chinese government", not "I don't like this optional feature that I enabled". To answer your question of "who would want this?", the answer is gamers. Who would have guessed.

I don't use Opera GX anymore and I don't think anyone should but my god your takes on the UI are quite awful. You're basically just saying it's outdated and clunky without giving a point of reference to what you think is the optimal UX for a web browser. And web content? It's a browser not a search engine. I enjoyed and used it for its UI specifically since it's obviously more modern and easier to use than say Chrome or Firefox which still use typical unrecognizable lists that make you dig through menus just to find a specific setting. At least with opera it had clear toggles and actually really good theming options. And yes, I use the shortcuts on the homepage. Not really sure what you found bad about them.. They look fine. Sure, some sites won't show a logo but aside from that they're large and easy to click and view from a glance. On edge (Yes, I know it's setting the bar low) the icons are miniscule, and I like having bigger icons for things like this personally. Do I still use OperaGX? No, I'm very much aware of the privacy concerns although it's not too different from what American corporations are already doing. Only difference is that it goes to China and not our government. Bloat as a term has lost all meaning, Just because you don't use these features does not mean others don't or won't. It's easy to call anything bloat because it means nothing..

I agree with all of your points on privacy however you have to realize the design language argument is entirely your opinions. For many people it is the design language of apps like Chrome and safari that are severely lacking. Additionally more than anything I find the browser is best suited for people with adhd. All the little animations and sounds and visual effects don't make the browser run faster or be more useful, but they make working on the web more engaging and slightly less excruciating.

Other than the whole location and company thing, you literally just pointed out that the browser isn’t google. Google, bing, Microsoft edge, none of these have the bookmarks bar ever toggled on by default. GX same thing. “Why does it have all this flashy blocky games on the home page?” Uh well it’s said it’s made for gamers. “Well couldn’t I just see these on steam or a game website instead?” Do you complain seeing them on steam also? Like I’m not dick riding Opra, im not defending Opra, however everything you pointed out (other than the location and company thing) is that it isn’t google or bing. Opra has some game recommendations, and mini games you could play. Not defending Opra once again, just stating that the entire time I watched this you were just pointing out why it has more items on the Home Screen, and settings were blocky and weird, same as Google but boring and bland. The one thing I miss about Opera GX is the feature where whatever you have in your clipboard at the time can be pasted like a file. Served me tons when I wanted to copy an Image and use it as a profile picture instead of downloading it. Does any other browser have this? Is there an extension I can use on other browsers?

I like the sounds of the browser probably due to some sensory thing in my brain. I legit do not care if my information is being stolen because I’m not doing anything seriously important on the browser. It does use a lot of resources but not enough to make a difference for me. The game thing at the bottom is annoying and the sidebar does get a little useless, but I can’t speak on that because I only use the my flow thing. Overall, hard disagree but I can at least understand why you don’t like it.

You're not gonna like this answer, but by far the lightest weight browsers are Edge on Windows and Safari on the Mac--safari in particular is unbelievably lightweight and optimized for Mac users. Honestly, though most browsers are pretty well optimized these days. I would have to advise steering away from chrome--and obviously Opera GX--performance is your main concern. I've had pretty good experience with Firefox recently, and they seem to have made quite a few improvements to memory usage in particular. On the windows, though, I've switched to Brave and it runs well enough, which paired with its security features, makes it a win in my book. I'm not sure how much this comment helped… But I hope it helps some!

I'm a huge fan of firefox personally. I tried it to move away from chrome and it freed up so many resources. It's super simple with no fluff. I'm biased cause I have a vendetta against Microsoft, so I wouldn't recommend Edge and, in my opinion, it feels like it has a lot of bloat when hopping in. When I went to go check it out for this reply, I had to click through like 7 different pages just to start browsing and the home page looks like a mess. If you don't mind that or Microsoft, Edge seems just fine. I unfortunately can't speak for mac, since my only experience with Safari was on my old iPhone 7 and I liked it pretty well when I used my iPhone, so it does have some brownie points.

One of the worst reviews I've seen so far! All you did was say " Why This! Why That! " without explaining anything or giving any other alternative. OperaGX just like most other browsers is customizable, raining down on it because it has default features like sound or widgets etc is just plain ignorance, all of these can be turned on or off at any given time. Personally I like OperaGX because of it's UI and features like the side bar for easy access to WhatsApp/Instagram etc. Next time instead of complaining about the features you think are useless, just make a coherent video explaining why OperaGX is so evil, instead of just saying " oh it's owned by china company aka china bad aka big no no"...

Tbh, the review is WAYYYY too nitpicky because some people like the small gimmicks, sounds, sidebar, mods, etc. I was a fan of the sidebar because it was such an easy way to see who was streaming on Twitch and to use Spotify. Also, their built-in Ad blocker was hella convenient. However, it does use a lot of memory, which I've noticed when watching KZbin while playing a game. The whole spying on data is typical. Google and Microsoft do the same thing, and I moved from Chrome to GX because it was just better. Anyway, today I did switch to Firefox and a lot of plugins actually make me feel warm at home (I'll still miss the sidebar tho)

But I left Opera for Firefox literally today because there are plenty of browsers (open source ones) that allows you to protect your data better than these closed sourced ones. Now, I didn't care about my data beforehand, but Opera does use a lot of resources and memory, especially when playing games while a video is playing. I still don't think Opera is that bad because I miss the sidebar that Firefox does not have. But, Firefox isn't bad either and I think prioritizing user experience first is a good thing.

Secondly, how "useless" everything is was also a subjective argument. I get a lot of use all the time out of things he called useless. I'm not sure if you can turn it off, and if not he's right that it should be an option, but ultimately that barely changes anything when you can just ignore it at no negative consequence.

I don't use Opera since a while now, I know there are trust issues with the company and the fact it isn't open source software is a big deal but... This video is a giant bias, if you really care about the people who download this type of browsers, you should repeat the tests and benchmarks, make an extensive analysis in security, maybe showing some proof of what you're saying, but this video is all about personal taste and the only part that shows some effort and is actually useful for the audience is the EULA revision which is incomplete. In my biased point of view this video is as awful as Opera GX.

I just like the browser. Some features aren't for everyone. The browser sounds can be annoying to some people, but I personally like them. I've found use for many things you pointed out were unnecessary. The release dates of games on the main page helped me find some of my favorite games ever. It is ultimately up to preference and how risky you are going to take your safety on the internet (if there really is any safety left anymore.) Sure, its scummy that they say they value your safety and privacy only to try and backstab you in the end-user license agreement. I get it, but I personally have found more use using this browser as opposed to Firefox, Edge, and Chrome. Edit: Also, with the performance issue, i have never had any issue with the browser tanking my performance in games.
