Eastonmade Axis 1yr Review -21

Detailed review of the Eastonmade Axis splitter. Discuss the Pro’s and Con’s. Did I make the right decision selling my Eastonmade 12-22 and buying the Axis?

I can see that being able to stand at a workbench and sliding and spinning the logs is much easier than bending over not to mention wrestling with stuck logs makes this unit the choice for me. It also seems much easier for a single person to use alone. I only split wood for myself so I am really not concerned with seconds on my cycle time. Now I just have to send him 500 bucks and in a short 15 months Ill have one lol. Looks like it will work good for breaking beads on tires also. Thanks for the video.

Anthony you pointed out the major attributes of the Axis. I would never go back to a horizontal splitter. You’re right, I’m a one man operation as well and this truly is a dream machine to work with which has me splitting longer with less fatigue. For mostly bundle wood production, I can see your affinity toward the Axis. For occasional bundle wood, but mostly firewood for other-than-bundles, the 12-22 all day long. The 12-22 is a production beast, especially with the choice of a 4 way, 6 way or box wedge. Cheers!

My first splitter was a 12-22 with the box wedge, 6 way and 4 way. I will say most of the time I had the 4 way installed. One factor to address is what kind of wood are you cutting. I agree the 12-22 may be a bit faster but if you have anything but straight logs the Axis will not be far behind with production and produce a better quality product with less kindling that comes from using the 4-6 or box wedge. At the end of the day less fatigue using Axis then 12-22 because of no bending over. Both machines are AWESOME!!! Thanks for watching and commenting

Hello Tony, thank you for the one year review of your Eastonmade Axis. Cannot believe yours is a year old. I think the Axis is just about the most versatile log splitter, as you can split huge rounds 40”+ to splitting kindling. Having the work table at a height without bending over. The lift table is massive and can fit a lot of rounds on and has the power to lift them. When you get use to the Axis, you can achieve multi splits per round (pie cuts) without taking the round off the table.

@@TonysCoolTools if I recall you went to the Paul Bunyan festival/ show before? Did Eastonmade or any of the other companies have demo models they were selling after the show? I’m in SW Ohio and have been there before but it was many years ago.

Adam, yes I attended the PB show last year. Unfortunately all the splitters at the show are sold months before the show and people are saving shipping by having Eastonmade bring them to the show. The proper working table height is a huge benefit in keeping your back from getting overly sore. Although you didn't show it in your splitting demo, processing those bigger rounds is much easier on the Axis due to the large work table and log lift.

Great show Tony. Thank you for sharing this and giving your honest opinion on this machine. I'm not sure how fast that conveyor travels, but why would you need it to go faster than what you showed here.? People may say, you need to run it faster to throw it further. That's just gonna wear parts out quick plus it'll rob hydraulic oil from the wedge ram like you mentioned. The 2nd reason is you can only split the wood so fast, so a fast speed conveyor spends most of its time empty wearing parts. (I'm not sold on the conveyor speed as a good option). I do like this splitter. It one of the best I've seen. I like all the other options it has. Thank you.

Looks like a excellent splitter. I spit what people call tree service wood. I would like a 12-22 or the next size up. I work full time and don’t sell wood. I might start selling bundles because I got 3 years ahead right now. Good video as always.

Dan as I pointed out I owned a 12-22 for two years and it’s an awesome splitter. But, I found for tree service wood the Axis turns crappy wood into sellable firewood much easier then the 12-22 with much less scrap/kindling. My money is on the Axis for tree service wood. Appreciate you watching 👍

@@TonysCoolTools yes it does. I own a tree removal company and I can tell you without question that it splits some of the nasty, gnarly logs I've had. When you have a splitter that can make unsplitable logs into sellable firewood you are in good shape.

Powersplit is the splitter that Andrew copied. Lol He forgot to add the "drive it around on the yard" aspect though. I don't understand why the exhaust on a lot of splitters blows right in your face. I had to put a diverter shield on 2 of my splitters. So, I have a 1 yr. waiting period to get my Axis. At 65 I hope I'm still alive!!! Grant the PowerSplit is the splitter I was buying before I even saw the Eastonmade line of products. However if you put both machines next to each other there is a night and day difference. I like the concept of driving the machine to the wood but it definitely brings up the cost of the splitter. In my opinion the table height and foot pedal are the two major shortfalls. Tony the Eastonmade Axis is definitely one cool well made tool and very well suited to your firewood splitting for bundles and boiler use. Wonder how much added frictional surface area is needed on the table to keep the angle splits from slipping at the heel…would a textured epoxy paint system like Rhino liner work versus a modification to add expanded metal strip or raised texture surface from the manufacturer. Glad you and Chris were able to troubleshoot the directional exhaust port issue so you no longer get splitting headaches 🤕

Rick yes it would make moving the Axis a little easier. One thing I didn’t cover was the foot pedal, for travel the pedal pushes upward and held in with a pin so it doesn’t drag or get caught on anything. I will cover this in my next video. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Chris the most important aspect for me was the ability to stand up when splitting. The log lift and table was just a bonus. But as I showed I stage all my wood first so I'm not walking back and forth getting wood. I've had a couple horizontal splitters and would never go back after owning a vertical splitter. TCT

@@TonysCoolTools right I use a supersplit to resplit all my wood. I buy all my wood split I put up about 300 face cords. If you haven't seen the super split in action check it out it's the original kinetic splitter. Also works great for making kindling out of slab wood. It's been bullet proof for 6 years.

The knife height is adjustable, as you said. One operator commented that he does not like it to stop close to the round because it does not allow enough time for him to get out of the way. If the knife is dull you would get better performance if you sharpened it. I expect that the vertical is much slower than the horizontal. I suppose that depends on exactly what you want to do with it. The speed that you described was not a bad speed. You probably did not count the time it took to stage all of that wood. The reason the vertical is slower is that you need to give each piece constant attention, instead of just pushing the go lever.

One problem I have often observed is that when rounds or pieces with slightly canted ends are being split, they frequently slide out of position. Perhaps something can be done on the table top to prevent this slippage. Possibly a piece of expanded steel or some gridwork of welds? Otherwise, that is an absolutely excellent stand up piece of equipment.

Glen that’s a good suggestion, the great thing about the Axis is that the foot control can be feathered to engage slowly on pieces that are not cut square. I will have a video showing how this works in the very near future. Appreciate you watching and commenting 👍

I don't care how good of friend they are...I would not have their goofy pinwheel on my nice Axis! 🙄 Does the machine have leveling bubbles on it anywhere or do you have to carry a level around? Like so many 1st generation makes of things. There will be bugs and issues discovered once they hit the field. It seems to always pay off in waiting for the smoke to clear and get the next generation model. Andrew always seems to be forthcoming with issues and tackles them straight on. He strives to make them better, and not just the finger pointing alot of manufacturers seem to do with issues. Thanks for video!👍

Wayne the Axis does not have a leveling bubble. Just an eyeball will due, better to have machine pitched slightly backwards so rounds don’t vibrate off. Unfortunately if everyone waited for version 2.0 no one would buy the first version. In post Covid times you have to get what you can when you can. I always try to keep my equipment as new as possible so I can sell if new version comes out similar to me selling my 12-22 and buying Axis. As usual Thanks for your thoughts and comments 👍

Mike as you know I’m blessed to have a pole barn to store Axis when not in use. I have close to 80+ hours on it now. I don’t know how many cords I’ve split so far but I can process a face cord using conveyor in about 17 minutes.

Oh the reason I cut the complete face on front of some of my IBC totes is I use as a poor man’s tool box to move bucked up pieces of wood or to carry a bunch of tools out to jobsite. I have a set of set of 3-point pallet forks for rear of tractor so basically I can double my load.

@@TonysCoolTools That makes sence. I only use IBC totes for firewood so i only cut out what is necessary to reach the bottom of the tote and keep as much structural integrity. Keep up the great work Tony.

Powersplit makes a single.and double splitter with conveyer and it can self propels to wood location

Joseph I am a big fan of PowerSplit well before Eastonmade was a company. I previously lived in Chicago and most of the big firewood producers used the double station PowerSplit. Just before I retired I did a lot of research and narrowed my choices to PowerSplit and Eastonmade. Louie from PS gave me a couple people to go out and run their machines. Both people told me the same thing, for a tall person the table is to low and the foot pedal is to high. If you were to put the machine side by side there is a noticeable difference. A simple example is weigh of the two units, the Tow behind PS static buggy weighs 500 lbs. The Eastonmade without conveyor is approx. 1,500 lbs. Both are great Canadian companies and make awesome products but based on my research my money is on the Axis. Thanks for watching and commenting

@@TonysCoolTools I don't know a lot about working with splitters however that Japa 405 is kicking ass in the mini processer market. Gerry at Easton said they would not be adding a mini processer anytime soon so I don't think Andy would be offended if you did a review of the 405 plus it would be a great asset to your channel and you need more versatility to add subs to your channel

For me I think that is the best splitter. I'm making boiler wood so a single wedge is all I need and I think there is far less waste. I noticed your one IBC tote you have the front cut out of it all the way to the bottom. Looks like a better option, have you had any issues with it?

I’ve used this design for the last couple of years and it seems to work well.

A few points from another Axis owner.. the machine is a beast and nothing will stop it. It’s a solid unit but can be improved with a bit of engineering. 1) Engine should be turned 90 degrees CCW to blast cooling air AWAY from hydraulic tank so it doesn’t heat up the oil and operator during the summer. It should be fine in the winter, but it roasts you in hotter weather. I installed a baffle to block the airflow and that has helped. 2) The lift table should be just about 1/4” higher than the tabletop so large rounds slide onto it easier. 3) Conveyor need major re-design so it feeds better. The machine design forces compromises on the conveyor but I’m sure it can be improved. The feed performance is bad and most people toss the wood half way up the chain to get it to go. The new shark fin paddles will help, but the overall design needs help. 4) I saw Joe’s muffler video when he put it out but it looks like he’s taken it down. It was an honest criticism and it’s too bad it’s gone.

Chuck, they are working on or have already changed the chain on the conveyer. Andrew did a video on it a couple of weeks back. I believe he said you might be able to just buy the chain to retrofit it if you want.

@@jamesbainton yes, I saw the video you're referring to and have spoken to them about getting some paddles that I could replace a few of mine with. At first I was given a price per paddle and then a few days later I was told they would only sell the entire chain. Go figure. The new paddle design is just a quick fix for a design that needs some refinement.

i should have bought your 12-22 when you sold it, it only needed a box wedge to make it perfect for me i should get to the shows and run some of these splitters even the one chris has might be more than enough splitter for me. maybe a road trip to the wood yard would be good also as im probably only 4 hours west of chris and i could try his splitter and get my 15 minutes of fame as they say.

Well Wayne I may have good news for you, my splitter may be up for sale. The person I sold it to wants to upgrade to the 37D Eastonmade. Oh and by the way mine did have the box wedge but didn’t have the newer pull back arm. It came with 4 & 6 way as well as the box wedge. The person is just South of Chris in Racine WI. How tall is it to the top of the cylinder? Looking for what size garage door?

Well Christophe from the ground to the top of the cylinder is 102-1/2” and will probably not fit in a standard garage opening which is typically 96”. Naturally with a conveyor it’s even higher at 126”. Hope this info helped you out.👍TCT
