You can use any solid blocks. Cobblestone, stone, andesite, wood, ...

Like 100% fool proof works cause I have an old style one on my old realm I have copied and it works flawless but as soon as I started a new world and built the exact style farm it's obsolete and not working but maybe like 3 monster ever 5 mins
