Most people starting with hydroponics get intimidated by it, theres a lot of language thrown around that intimidates people away from trying. This man just wanted to grow some lettuce, did it in an affordable way, and didnt get intimidated by any of them other peoples big mouthwords. He showed me that I can do it too! You CAN do it too! It's not some kind of elaborate science or engineering acomplishment.

OK, I've watched a number of videos to learn about hydroponics and this guy has created one of the best, if not THE best video I have seen! Rarely have any of the other video's even introduced the idea of testing PH and PPM, let along showing exactly how their systems were made! Excellent video that shows what is possible even if the conditions aren't "ideal". Great, easy to watch and understand someone who enjoys what they are doing. It shows...

Thanks Marc. What you speak of is the technical side of hydroponics. It's very advanced for someone like me. Obviously, there is a lot that I don't understand. And it almost kept me from pursuing hydroponics. But what I found was a home gardener could still have decent success without the education. It's a really cool way of growing. At some point, I could see myself doing further studies and research to fully understand the what's and why's. But it's gonna take some time.

I did a similar setup. Instead of drippers I installed a small 1/2 in pvc pipe inside the larger pipe. I installed sprayers on the half inch pipe and was able to saturate the roots spraying them inside the larger pipe. Not very much extra cost at all!

I bought some about a year+ ago and used it a few times. As I recall, it was doing crazy things with the PH of the soil. I ended up throwing the bottle away. I probably just didn't read the instructions. :-) I think ya'll would really like this setup. You could grow all sorts of fresh greens in it. And it would go great in some of your cooking videos. You can't get much fresher lettuce. Thanks Noreen. ;-)

Thanks bro, I appreciate the support. This is a good way for Lea to have a nice clean salad. So simple even I could do it ! A friend of mine sent me the testers and bought himself some new ones. Now that's pretty cool, when you get things without even asking. The Lord works in mysterious ways sometimes. The light is somewhat filtered, coming thru 2 layers of greenhouse plastic. Temps were in the upper 90's several days in there, and the lettuce did fine.

I couldn't afford the good ones either. A friend of mine saw the other video and knew I didn't have any. So he sent me his ! .. I agree. My plan was to try and read the leaves, to see what the plant needed, if anything. They all looked happy to me, so I didn't change anything. I don't know lettuce like I do tomatoes, but I still felt that I'd be able to see when something was wrong. I've had plenty of experience looking at bad tomato leaves !

Thanks. From a commercial standpoint, hydroponics can be quite technical. But for the home gardener, it doesn't have to be that way. As time goes by, you learn to read the plants. When something is wrong, they have a way of letting you know. Hopefully you catch it in time. If not... it's time to start some more seed. :)

Thanks, I have everything together for a DWC hydroponic system now. I do have my rails also for this system that I will do outside or in a green house next spring. I found a supplier in my state of Minnesota in Minneapolis called Midwest Hydroponics. They had everything and at a good price. I ordered all I needed and the shipping wasn't bad either. I will let you know more after I get the product from them. All I have to do now is get a container suitable for a DWC system.

Hi! I'm sure you read this all the time but man your video's are more than excellent! And you're so easy to listen to. You must know by now but for the "new people" watching this video, X 10 on his ppm meter means 222 ppm X 10 = 2220 ppm. So if the lettuce is supposed to be between 600 and 800 ppm, there's way too much nutrients in the water. One reason why the level of nutrients is too high, could be that the lettuce drank more water than they hate nutrients. Sometimes the level of the water can be high but with barely any nutrients in it. It all depends on what the plant needs. Also don't forget to take a ppm reading of your water before mixing any nutrients in it. Ciao!

The variety of lettuce is Adriana. It is a heat tolerant butterhead lettuce that I purchased from Johnny's seeds. The nutrient mix is a combination of a water soluble 4-18-38, calcium nitrate, and Epsom salt that I mixed at a 2-2-1 ratio, with approximately 8 grams of 4-18-38, 8 grams of calcium nitrate, and 4 grams of Epsom salt per 5 gallons of water. Pour it in, turn it on, and let 'er rip !

I looked up the ph lockout, and its certainly interesting. I really can't explain what was going on. It was a weaker solution than what I used for the tomatoes. Why the PH took off like that I have no idea. One thing different is the fact that I have very little water in the bottom of the rails. I put drippers to supply each plant, as opposed to them being in somewhat of a DWC.
