Ian is completely wrong about the controls. LT never aims the gun out unless you have it in your hand already. It only focuses the camera / presents contextual options. so if you are running around with your gun in your hand yeah its only a matter of pressing LT and then RT to shoot someone. if you gun is in your holster you either have to press L1 to unholster it, then press LT to aim, then press RT to shoot the dude. Or Press LT to focus, press RT to "draw weapon" and then press RT AGAIN to shoot. how do you perform three button presses accidentally?
@Acarinn
@Acarinn 6 жыл бұрын
it doesnt at ALL matter the distance at which you are from a person when you press LT. the only difference that makes is whether it focuses on them or focuses on nothing / something closer. you can absolutely walk around holding LT without ever aiming your weapon.

Brandon is always so anti-consumer, it's annoying at this point. He loves using the argument that if you can't come up with something better yourself, your complaint is invalid. It's not the consumers responsibility to fix the issue, only to point it out (Mark Rosewater talks about this in his 20 Years, 20 Lessons GDC talk). The initial question was about learning the controls, and the process of tutorialisation, not the controls in general, but the allies seemed to only focus on that.

Regarding Toshinden, a lot of gamers don’t know or forget that Battle Arena Toshinden was a system seller for the PS1. It was specifically the counter to Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn. It was basically PlayStation’s Altered Beast. A game that sold systems was wasn’t very good in retrospect. Sophia, from Toshinden, was the PlayStation mascot for a while before Crash and all PlayStation kiosks brazenly showed of screenshots from Toshinden as marketing for the system. S big part of thevappeal was the fact that Toshinden was texture mapped when most 3D games weren’t, yet. Virtua Fighter made a “remixed” version with Texture maps just to compete.

I thought Jones was a bit too quick to dismiss any RDR2 complaint, he acted like Ian and others were dumb. But there are obtuse and odd control schemes in the game that take getting used to (trade off being the amount of interaction you get, which is awesome.) Especially holding L2 to pull up menus of context actions, it's tough to deprogram your brain because that's now become the universal "aim gun" button. Have a little tolerance, everyone. Don't be one of those drones who lives to defend a company (you know the types, they're all over youtube, easy allies is beloved because it's a shelter from that storm. IMHO, at least.)

Tbh i wouldn’t mind the realism push in RDR2 but I’ve had so many dumb things happen, like patting a dog had such a tedious animation that someone else walked up, had a problem with me standing in their way, and started attacking me as soon as I was done patting a dog. I'm 20 hours or so into RDR2 and I still find the controls to be problematic. It has not gone away. I'm enjoying the game in spite of it, but I don't think you should discount the problems if after 60 hours you might not care as much as you did in the first 10. Shooting, for example, is still as underwhelming as it has been from the get go. The story and other immersion has become more compelling, but the flaws have remained the same.

Chris Phillips I find the shooting really fun and satisfying on foot, especially if it’s part of a mission. But I feel that might be because I’m “prepared” for a shootout. @Ayoul 6 жыл бұрын
@@NileSings It's weird to me that people aren't adapting to them. There's a TON of interactions sure, but they're all very consistent. Fishing uses the same buttons as shooting. Shooting on foot is the same as on horse (some games have to switch buttons around for shooting while in vehicles cars because people expect to accelerate and brake with triggers). I got used to them after my first sitting of a couple hours. The only thing more convoluted than most games is the left trigger to focus on people when you don't have a gun out. That's literally it when you think about it. The rest is pretty par for the course so the fact that one button is causing all these issues to people is really funny to me.

The one thing I wish that Red Dead 2 did, unless it already has it and I missed it, is a log of the info that pops up in the upper left hand corner. Doesn't have to be from the beginning of the game, just the last 10 or so tips. There have been several times where I glanced up there to catch the tail end of something that I probably wanted to know about. Ended up saving a clip on PS4 and leaving the game quickly to watch it which just... It's not the best. Maybe an extra tab in that left on D-pad set of menus (that I should probably be consulting more, come to think of it). I definitely had some troubles with doing things I didn't want, even once or twice well out of the first 15 hours, but I generally like the scheme now. It's very strange coming to it from just about any non-Rockstar game, but at this point, without about 50% completion on my save file, I like it.

RE: PS Classic is an insane missed opportunity. You will never get consensus on what games should be on this thing, but if they had dropped a 512GB SD Card into the mini-console, they could have added PS Store support to buy PS1 games for it. It would have satisfied people for all those games they wanted for it, and would have made it expandable that neither the NES or SNES classic are. I have no reason for this when my Vita can play more PS1 games.

There is one thing about Red Dead 2s control that frustrate the hell out of me (and I can't believe no one else is mentioning this). I was convinced that by now they would change that, but they did it again: Your character will only walk very slowly UNLESS you hold the X (or A on Xbox) button. WHAT? I mean, we are at an age of analog sticks that can register how far you push the stick into a specific direction. Every other game I can think of makes it so, that if you just slighty push the analog stick your character walks, if you push it all the way, the character will run. And guess what, even Red Dead 2 does it right, but only if you switch to first person mode! There it suddenly works. Why not in third person? Having the need to hold another button to run feels like I'm playing a PS2 game. My only guess on why they are doing it is, they really, really want us to walk instead of running. Maybe to make it look more realistic. And I kinda get that, because I'm one of those people who often walks through a town, instead of running, just because it feels more realistic. But I could do that by just slightly pushing the stick, if the game would let me. I don't get it.

It's not that different? Especially when I've got a lot of the PS1 games I love already on my PS3. Part of the charm of buying a NES/SNES classic is getting to play those old games with a controller you may not have held in years. PlayStation evolved their controller, certainly, but it's a much more subtle evolution as far as how it feels.

I’m not surprised at Red Dead’s sales, and I’m even less surprised at the negative response from gamers. When a game gets to a certain size and a certain production level, you get a LOT of sales to a “look-in” audience. They just want to be part of the pop culture event. When you sell to a crown that big, you can’t make everyone happy. I think the buyers who actually knew what they were getting and liked it is closer to what Kyle imagined sales to be pre-release.

01:00:00 Guys! Even if your weapon is in its holster, if you press L2 while your gun is "equipped" , will still result in you pulling out your gun. Just because your weapon is in it's hoster, this does not mean that it is now "un-equipped". In order to make sure you do not have the gun "equipped", you need to hold L1, and the turn your weapon wheel onto a blank slot, or your "fist" slot. I do this EVERY time i know i do not want to pull my gun out accidentally by pressing "L2". I agree with Ian, that it is annoying and kind of ridiculous. but i also agree with Jones because I don't have another solution. Pressing L2 will cause you to "aim", whether it's just aiming your focus or aiming your gun. so you need to be careful and make sure your gun is NOT ONLY in it's holster, but also, it is "unequipped" by opening your weapon wheel and selecting a blank slot or the fist slot. i hope this explains it.

Ridge Racer Type 4 is fantastic. It STILL looks and handles well. The soundtrack is all killer NO filler. And it's held up as one of the best racers of all time & goes back and worth with only Ridge Racer 5 as "Best Ridge Racer". It definitely belong on this PS1 Classic.

The worst thing about RDR2's controls is when you are running and then aim, it drops you to the walk speed instead of the faster aiming movement speed. This makes keeping momentum up very difficult. Also A should be jump+block, X reload+melee and B crouch.

Sony owns Jet Moto, Gran Turismo, Wipeout, Alundra, Legend of Dragoon, and PaRappa. I'm surprised none of those games made it. Of course there are MANY absent 3rd party games too (Mega Man Legends, Bushido Blade, Silent Hill, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Dragon Quest 7, Suikoden 1 and 2, Legend of Mana, FF Tactics, Parasite Eve, Harvest Moon, and more mentioned by other Allies). I have to wonder why Sony bothered making this thing if they couldn't lock down the deals beforehand. The classic's list of games seems put together by whoever built the roster for PS Allstars Battle Royale. Would it be a good idea if Sony released a $50 add-on to this thing that came with a Dualshock 1 and 10 more games (Ape Escape, for example)?

I’ve put about 40-60 hours into RDR2 and the controls are not a problem. I do what is expected and I learn the control scheme over time so that it doesn’t become a problem and now I can control Arthur with little issues. Don’t understand why so many people are struggling that bad with controls. Remember that we got used to fps games on n64-ps2 days. The controls in this game haven’t gotten me killed as much as other games have with less button inputs.

With that L&R RDR2 back-and-forth, and Jones doing his best to justify the controls. I think GotY is clearly down to Monster Hunter: World, Spiderman, and God of War. RDR2 seems more hype than it's worth.

The PS1 classic is cash grab following the trend of mini consoles. It is harder for the PS1 to have the best games and for it to still be cost effective, because of licensing issues.. But from a consumer perspective, I don't see the appeal of spending the money. Nostalgia can sometimes be used as a trick

The biggest complaint I've seen about RDR 2 is that people don't like that X or A is held to run and they say that Rockstar should clue in and have had to click L3 to toggle run. The funny thing is that you can change the controls to standard FPS which changes run to L3 and you can switch run from hold to run to toggle to run, so you can just click L3 to run. So they are complaining about something as if it isn't there when it totally is. I personally prefer the standard controls in the context of RDR2, though in a regular shooter I'd probably dislike it.

I fully appreciate all of your disbelief regarding cloud computing as there has been a history of over-promising and under-delivering on this topic. However, you are all (Kyle's comments somewhat less so) underappreciating the implications. The implications being, one: drastic reduction in the initial cost of a console. To have a streaming box, all you need is an internet ready device with a controller and AV output, with minimal other computing power. To get a level of graphical fidelity that surpasses the most high-end computers existing right now, you will need minimally expensive hardware, because all the horsepower is on a sever. Of course there will be subscription fees, but the initial cost of a console purchase should drop massively. Second: graphical fidelity. With your (relatively) cheap streaming box, you won't have access to "good" graphics, you will have access to the best graphics. But not just the best, the most modern. On a conventional console, your graphical horsepower is fixed at the date it is built, but when you are using cloud computing, as long as the server side hardware is periodically updated, it will likely be equivalent to running the best PC rig at any given point, but of course, without that massive cost to a gamer of buying a new graphics card or processor. Third: streamlining and optimization. There is a reason Apple products perform so well even in the cases that the Android hardware is superior. The reason is that the software is perfect optimized for the hardware because Apple knows the exact hardware specifications that the software will be used on. The same is true with respect to how good console games can look towards the end of a life cycle. If you are developing PC games, you don't know the specific hardware that an end-user will ... use. With cloud computing, a developer will know exactly what hardware that the cloud server is using and will be able to optimize specifically to perform best on that service. Most gamer's do not have access to the highest end rigs at any one point. They have a snapshot of the best graphical fidelity at a given time, and unless they are investing significant money into staying up to date with new hardware as it is released, they are swimming upstream. With consoles, this is even more salient, as the hardware stays largely the same until a new generation is released. Cloud computing could allow any gamer on the platform to have the highest graphical fidelity feasible at any one point in time. Obviously there are caveats, the most obvious one being connection speed, but yeah, just some thoughts on the massive potential (and inevitable) upsides.
