I started hand lettering because I had a pack of thin Crayola markers, but it didn't work out. I was watching tutorial for brush pen, and practice with my marker. It was like a few years ago so I really didn't know the difference between hard nib and brush pen. Then I saw brush pens, and I thought I would just try it, and they are VERY different. So I was excited, hop on youtube for some tutorial, but I was disappointed and actually went back to my crayola markers LOL So it's really not about more or less expensive stuff, but finding what kind of art supplies you like, or works for you.

How do you learn the strokes? Like where to start and end the strokes. I was told you should lift at least after every letter.
@HowtoHandLetter8 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are totally right! It's really helpful to break each letter down into strokes and practice them individually first so you can get that pressure sensitivity right! I actually just did a video going over this - and it's kind of long because it's a bit more in depth than my other videos, but it has all you need to know and I show you how to break down the letters (it's about 4 minutes into the video I think). Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGKomKibl86kbK8 Hope that helps & let me know if you have any other questions!

Have you tried the sharpie brush pens, because I'm considering getting those over the tombow because they're a lot cheaper and that look the same
@HowtoHandLetter7 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried them because I hate the smell of sharpies!! I'm not sure how they smell but I didn't want to risk it if they are super strong smelling like regular sharpies. But I have wanted to try because they look really juicy - you'll have to let me know if you end up trying them. I think the Artline Stix look pretty similar also. Have you tried those? Thanks for watching!
@naturallydivine20107 жыл бұрын
Abi Janelle I actually have those, and I wouldn't suggest them for a beginner because , when you're just beginning, you tend to go a lot slower while you're trying to get the hang of your strokes than someone who has more practice. This matters because something you really have to worry about with the sharpies is that a lot of ink flows out at one time, and when you're moving slowly on top of that your paper will get saturated quickly and start to flake and disintegrate under your brush tip.
@naturallydivine20107 жыл бұрын
Abi Janelle Trust me, I learned the hard way 😕
@destinygamingproductions247 жыл бұрын
nope , you are good , at least in my opinion they don't smell strong , in fact when i was using mine , i didn't even notice it , so i think you should get a black or whatever color you want and try them , and if you dont like them you can do a giveaway!!!!
@destinygamingproductions247 жыл бұрын
i feel your pain , i am a beginner (more intermediate really) and i found these at my local art store while i was OBSESSED with brush pens(really i now have 78 because of that phase) and when i saw them i was like "must have them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and i ran to the front of the store , but when i used them my paper fell apart and i threw them at the wall and just slammed my head on my table for a half hour saying why sharpie why.

Thanks for the great tutorial! I've tried using a cheap brush marker as well as a thick Crayola, and while I do the thick and thin strokes, I can't seem to see much difference. Are you using the tip of the crayolas only or are you shifting from the point (for the upward stroke) and the edge (for the downward stroke). I didn't see that you were...and I think that is my problem. Also the pressure. I was just trying to shift my marker to make thin and thick strokes.
@HowtoHandLetter7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimberley! Thanks for watching! When I do brush lettering with crayola markers, I'm holding my marker at a super slight angle, so I'm not using the very tip of the marker but kind of the side of the tip. When I write the downstroke part of my letter, I just push really hard and then when I curve back up I start to lighten up and just press at a normal pressure. So you are right, I'm using the same part of the marker for the entire letter, the only change is how hard I'm pressing. It can take some practice to get the hang of it, but I'd recommend starting with some basic drills if you haven't already. And also lifting up your pen after each stroke can help. I'd recommend this video if you haven't seen it already: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGKomKibl86kbK8 It uses regular brush pens, but is still a good place to start no matter what pen you're using. Have a great day!
@kimberleypierce79817 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your clear insturuction! I was trying to do just as you said, but the tip of the marker and wasn't really seeing any difference! (before that , I was trying to shift from point to side). I will try again the proper way and watch the video you suggested! Again, thanks!

How to Hand Letter But I just realised that I used Cartridge paper/THICK paper, but she used thin A4 size paper...mine bleeds through the side,not behind...do you think that I should invest in another brush pen?
@HowtoHandLetter7 жыл бұрын
Do you mean that it bleeds into the sides of your letters? Like instead of your letter having crisp edges, it looks jagged? If so, you would likely benefit from trying a different paper but it's not so much about the thickness as it is about the smoothness. If you feel the texture of your paper and it feels rough, that will cause your pen to bleed. You want it to feel more like a piece of smooth plastic. I personally use a cheaper photo type of paper and it's not much more expensive than regular printer paper. If you watch this video, it explains it & shows examples of my work bleeding on the regular printer paper. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5_LopSNfa-dgrM. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

I bought some cheap dual tip brush pens. And maybe it's my technique... But the the tips on these pens are getting feathered.. So im not getting a smooth thin line its pike a double thin line. Looks strange😨😨😨 any tips? Should I try the crayolas?
@snowychipmunk91956 жыл бұрын
Most brush pens will fray, it's not your technique. Some people suggest higher quality paper so that they won't fray as quickly, but I think fraying is inevitable. And yes, you should think about getting crayolas as they only get squished in the tip.

@HowtoHandLetter7 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for watching & subscribing!! For the crayola's, I'd definitely go with the Large Brush Pen set (set 1). The smaller one is for a tiny tip pen and you would probably have trouble getting the crayola to write that small. Hello! I'm not exactly sure what those pens are - but if you are using a really thin type of pen you could try to write with faux-calligraphy style. This video shows an example of that if you're not sure! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKSaY5Kqj89psMk And yes, I will definitely try to do a closer up of what the markers do. is it possible to write super small with the tombow dualbrush brushtip side? or is that part of what i'm doing wrong?
@GeoKuromi7 жыл бұрын
I really don't get what you mean. With the Crayola markers because the tip is so solid, no matter how much pressure I put on the tip it will produce the same line thickness. With my kuretake (similar to the tombow) because the have a soft tip, the like thickness can change with the pressure. And I ve seen the Crayolas on many videos about hand lettering and I just don't get how you achieve those results with them
@eggzumii7 жыл бұрын
there needs to be a certain angle to achieve the tapered lines... or maybe there's a difference in manufacturing.

@HowtoHandLetter8 жыл бұрын
Hi! This is just my handwriting after lots of practice :) I know it can be overwhelming at first, but I would start with just working on your muscle memory and pressing harder when you go down (downstrokes) and pressing lightly when you come back up (on your upstrokes). If you are on instagram - check on my recent instagram post (@howtohandletter) where I did a video of basic drills to start with. I will be doing an intro to basic handlettering soon & also have practice sheets that will be coming out in the next couple of weeks that you can trace over - so practice your drills and stick around! :) Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

I started calli last November. After watching many tuts I settled for David Nichols' on YT. He teaches several styles, the best to start with is Foundational because true to its name it is the foundation of all lettering styles. Best use a nib, penholder and ink, easy to find and inexpensive. Make sure to watch his 5 introductory videos. Once you're mastering Foundational (aka "Roundhand") you can play with other pens and styles.

Hello! I have a video that goes over how to form each letter, which is a good place to start! I'll link it in this comment. When you form your letters, some of them will be made by going down with your pen and some will be made by going up. These are your upstrokes and your downstrokes. When you're doing your downstrokes, you want to push harder so that you have a thicker line and when you are doing your upstrokes, you want to apply very little pressure so that you get really thin lines. Hope that helps!? Here are 2 videos that also might be helpful! Thanks for watching! How to form your letters: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5zYlq2YdrRpaKM. guys, calligraphy is easy. i started using an ordinary ballpen. what i did is write in cursive and make the down strokes thicker. then, i tried using markers. at first, it was hard because i wasn't use to it. i kept on practicing until i got the letters with the correct thinness and thickness..

Hello! That is honestly SO common! Tombow's are really prone to fraying and the best thing to do is to try and use a really smooth paper. I'll leave a link for a video that explains it more! kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5_LopSNfa-dgrM Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

do brush pens work on wood?
@c_jeanette5 жыл бұрын
hey, I don't know if it still help you but I wouldn't use expensive brushpens on wood. There is actually specific paper for brushpens that is smoother. So if you're using a surface that isn't really smooth your pen will fray. but you might give it a try with the crayola supertips or simply faux calligraphy instead

Hello! I use an iPhone holder that clamps to my desk & has a long piece that connects to the phone so it is up high (kind of where my face is). If you look in the description box of my videos, I have it listed in the section about what I use for filming. Thanks for watching!

Before I even start trying calligraphy or hand lettering I first need to learn cursive
@HowtoHandLetter7 жыл бұрын
You can start with your regular alphabet! A lot of the letters that I write are technically the cursive form of the letter, but not all of them (like b!). You can always start by learning the proper pressure of having thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes and then go from there! Hope that helps!

I don't understand why this didn't work for me. I messed around with pressure and everything and it doesn't make a difference
@HowtoHandLetter7 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that! You could try holding your pen at a slight angle. If your markers are dull or pushed in it could make it harder to get a thin upstroke. I would recommend just trying to draw some simple strokes like drills if you haven't already! Good luck! And thanks for watching!

how to avoid my tombow from fraying :(
@HowtoHandLetter8 жыл бұрын
What kind of paper are you using? This can definitely be the issue. I won't lie - I use cheap paper because I have a big pack of Tombows, but I have heard great things about HP Premium Laser Jet paper - It's on my list to buy and I will definitely share if it makes a difference.
