There are easy ways to light your model railroad, both ready made and home made. In this video I show you what I did to duplicate the Woodland Scenics Just Plugs lighting systems.
Many modelers like myself, love to make their own projects to enhance their model railroad. That's why I build these projects and share with others so they can have cost effective ways to light and automate their layout.

Cheaper yes, but easier? You know me and Ohm’s Law, we don’t get along. I just learned how to solder, so baby steps. I like the idea of plug and play. Maybe one day. I do like the Christmas lights idea though. Always thinking you are! -Mark

Gotta save some money somewhere. Keep watching the videos, you'll learn Ohms Law sooner or later. By keeping Current, you'll find out Watts happening without any Resistance.

Your videos are always interesting and timely. I am presently trying to resolve the isolation of my layout and adding strip lights to a building I havd scratch built. I also share the concern regarding the cost of the hobby, I think I have only ever bought one new love, the rest all being used. I too follow Budget Model Railways and they both do a great job. Fir my oart I 3d print various elements to add to my layout like buffer stops, scrap skips etc and make my isn trees from dead flowers from the garden. Keep up tgd great work👍

HI tom. I'm relatively new to model railways and am now just getting interested in the electronics involved (particularly lighting). I have to say that i find your video clips very informative and useful, thanks. However, I do wish that you would provide links to the next video when you have your clips spread over several clips, just like this one. You have so much content on your channel that I find it just about impossible to find the next clip.

Have you tried looking via the Playlists. They're all grouped together.

@@TomsTrainsandThings I did go to your Play Lists, sometimes with success, other times without. Even so, with so much content on your channel, first the correct Play List has to be identified and then a search of the Play List has to be made just to find that one illusive clip. Just saying, it would be really good if you could include a link in the video or at least in the description when the information being provided is covered over two or more clips. Cheers

Had a little chuckle at "the meat and potatoes" comment, that is a very British colloquialism. Another brilliant idea for a video, more power to your elbow.

Tom, you are a brilliant man. I have a question. Can I light an entire 4x8 layout (just led structures and street lamps) with just one used computer power supply picked up from a thrift store, like the one you have? Or is it more complicated than that? I'm trying to follow but I'm struggling lol

Thank you Jeff. Most LED's draw about 20ma at full brightness unless your using RGB LED's which could draw as many as 60 ma with full brightness to each color. You should be alright with one power supply, just take note of the max amperage of the voltage you will be using for your LED's

Useful info! I'm a novice on this stuff. What happens if you leave the transistor out of the circuit? Thanks!

Between the higher cost and higher ease of Woodland Scenics' system and the breadboard system you present is the MRC Light Genie. You and your viewers might want to see that.

I took a look at the Light Genie and it can handle more LED's than WS product, maybe something to look into. Thanks

Yes, that's true. The cost and complexity is somewhere between your system and Woodland Scenics'. In other words, the more work done for you, the more you pay. So, modellers have some good choices. On the low price end, it's so good to have someone like you who can guide us noobs thru the loops.
