That is so beautiful. Not easy for beginner though. The color mixes are easy but the glazing and softening and use of moisture is much more than beginner. At least for me. Two years ago I would be getting blooms all over because of not knowing to make paint thicker less water as the paper is drying, then go blend and soften. I am still beginner but not just starting beginner. You do such beautiful work.

And when I feel like failure I will take them out and compare them to watch do now so I can see progress and just keep practicing and learning. Watercolor is the toughest medium for me. I will save it for last try. I'm into acrylic now. Next might be oil. Pencils and pastel in between. Then if I master my craft, I will resort to watercolor.

Why not paint from life? Still life is usually arranged in front of the artist with a light source. Seeing as you can have an onion on your table there's no need to resort to a photo reference. The values and feeling of a still life are more fresh than copying a photo which is already a still image distorted by the camera and flattened onto paper. The challenges of painting from life make it far more rewarding than photo reference work. If you want to be taken seriously as an artist you must include work from life. 🙏
