I believe this song is damn near perfect for learning technique: alternating picking w/thumb or pick, string skipping, finger dexterity, ghost notes (with or without a pick), speed. haven't really seen/watched the thumb technique you're using, outside of Bernard Edwards. I think I'm gonna start using it, because it's a nice middle ground between straight plucking with the fingers, & the more harsh(?) attack of a pick. Good stuff, for sure!

I was just talking today to a student about the thumb technique! He said, that's similar to strumming a guitar! Lol! I had also told him the perfect way to learn a new technique is to find a song using the technique and play it over and over. Much more fun than sitting down doing exercises. Play music!!!
