Hi Howard, what if I don't add that major 3rd there (G string) but instead just use a double stop 5-5 on D and G? That sounds pretty nice, too. I wouldn't be outlining the A maj chord then, right?

No... You wouldn't, but it stills sounds good. A lot of players will give that double-stop a little bend - Hinting at the Major 3rd :-)
