HP soapmakers - are you still salting out the excess water or no?
@paulalynrider40096 ай бұрын
So the only person in the states I've seen salt out is Kendra from Soapy Friends but she uses it a rebatch method which I have done after her tutorial on it. BUT...there is a channel called Traditional Soaping , I think she's in S.Korea, that uses salting out as her main way of making soap from start to finish It's an intriguing method that I totally want to explore more! Also carrot soap is on my list of to do's. So great timing on this carroty series!

So I’ve been making my own Hydrosol without a distiller. I found the idea off some KZbin videos. I use a big stainless steel stock pot and turn one heat safe glass bowl upside down inside the pot. Then I use a 2nd heat safe glass bowl or Pyrex dish right side up and place it on the glass bowl inside the pot. I then put my rose petals, carrots, apples, strawberries ect.. into the bottom of the pot around the glass bowl that’s upside down. Then I pour my distilled water over the rose petals, carrots, apples ect until they are covered and the water is about 3/4 the way up the side of the upside down bowl. I turn the lid of the stock pot upside down so that the steam that rises will catch and roll down to the point of the lid and drop into the top right side up glass bowl that’s inside the stock pot. Turn the heat on medium low so the water in the bottom doesn’t boil and splash up into the top bowl your collecting your hydrosol in. Of course sterilize everything first and you can also put ice cubes in a bag and place that bag on top of the upside down lid, this helps the steam condense faster on the inside of that lid and speeds up the process. For those of us who don’t have a distiller laying around lol . And Ann Marie’s everything is too expensive for my blood. And that sucks because she does have some FO that I’ve tried that I really like, but I can’t justify the expense personally.

Sounds like a great setup! Yeah I’ve said for years that Anne Marie is for the hobbyist soapmaker, but now I’m starting to think that she’s just grifting my god. These prices are WILD. Hobby soapers are better off going to the local craft store.

Will definitely be trying this DIY method of distillation ... Man, I must say our bunch(the S&C fam) are extremely clever at finding ways to cut cost and do it ourselves!! ❤❤❤It's awesome not having to depend on others for things we need or want.
@CandaceJensen-iq7vx5 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Too rich for my blood lol 😂 but ya, I’ve got to cut costs or I wouldn’t be able to do all these soapy and cosmetic projects that I love. It’s truly my happy place when I’m making ❤️.

Wholesale supplies plus has carrot seed oil on sale for $27.27.for 1lb. On their SDS sheet it says it’s cold pressed carrot seed oil not essential oil. Brambleberry wants $90 For 16 ounces of their carrot seed oil and on their SDS sheet, I couldn’t find even an INCI name. That’s insanely expensive. I think she sleeps on a mattress firm mattress… I had to go look all that up after all of this conversation about it. Just wow… 🤯

Oop one of those old school soapers. You’ll fit in well with the Sudsers. 😂💜

Its interesting to learn all that.. not depending on a supplier for getting the additives you need for your line is a plus especially when you know how cheap it can be to do it yourself.. i had a similar experience with the liquid soap thickener i purchased and paid like $20 for 16 oz of corthix as its called in bb site.. i ran out and had to find an alternative which was HEC in powder form from a local supplier. A bottle of 250 g coast like $5 and a tiny amount is required to do the job with a fraction of the price. As well as the extracts they have.. i can do it at home and save my money.. thank you for all the information you provide its greatly appreciated ❤

Because of you, im digging more into the makeup of the fats in my soaps and other products. Very useful things to know so thank you so much for your talks on the science-y things!! My last soap, i did hot process and added carrot puree.
@norawalsh54716 ай бұрын
Oh man....that's a hefty price tag for whatever the carrot stuff is on BB... You definitely have made me rethink how I approach fancy butters and oils. If I can make it, I am absolutely going to. Thank you so much for all of this!

Seriously! BB is always overpriced but this one had me feeling some kinda way.

Oh and I use a preservative in my finished hydosol and keep it in the fridge. From what I’ve read it should last about a year.

Love that distiller! Mrs, I have my own copper distiller, I do make some Hydrosols, but never done good Hydrosols, been curious if all of them should be water distilled or steam distilled? Or ir depends on the fruit/vegetable? I am so wishing to make strawberries Hydrosol as it costs an arm and leg around here. Thanks for all info!!
@vernaharris1816 ай бұрын
You have said that you used shredded carrot…does that mean the leftover from the juicing or did you fine grate a raw carrot???
@MrsSoapAndClay6 ай бұрын
Hey! Shredded carrots for infusions to get all the benefits possible. The leftovers from juicing contain some benefits, but far less than unjuiced.

What do you think about using hydrolat instead water in soap making?
@MrsSoapAndClay6 ай бұрын
Hey! When you put botanicals in your lye solution and strain them out before pouring, effectively you’re making a quick hydrosol. I think it’s a great incorporation into your soaps!

Hi, I've been following your channel for a few weeks now and binge watching when ever I have time. Thank you, I have learned so much from you. I have a question unrelated to this video, I'm a new soap maker. I made a basic recipe which I made before, but this time I made it into a confetti soap. My ph is 10 is that too high and do I need to rebatch this soap? Previously it was 7.
@MrsSoapAndClay6 ай бұрын
Hey! pH of 10 is fine. Let it sit for a few weeks and test it again - sometimes it takes a bit longer to mellow out, but 10 is perfectly acceptable for soaps.
@ansobritz57956 ай бұрын
Thank you sooooo much.

So I have a question about the carrot seed extraction. I don’t have a distiller that can separate out the essential oils from the hydrosol. But I was wondering if we can crush up the seeds and extract them in our oils, like you did with the rosehips? Would we be able to get any of their goodness out of them that way?
@MrsSoapAndClay5 ай бұрын
Hey! You sure can, I would recommend starting with a heat phase and then letting them steep for a few weeks just to help extract the goodness from the seeds.
@CandaceJensen-iq7vx3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Yes I have a garden full of carrots that have gone to seed and I wanted to try this. I’ll harvest them and give it a go, and let you know how it turns out❤️
@1mindlessfan114 ай бұрын
When making the carrot oil and you shred the carrots and put them directly into the oil, why must you dehydrate the carrot before adding it to the oil?
@MrsSoapAndClay4 ай бұрын
Hey! Dehydrating the carrots removes the water content, so you’re less likely to have rotting while infusing.
@MissAllieDancer6 ай бұрын
Regardless of the description that does sound quite misleading, could the oil on brambleberry be cold pressed carrot seed oil? The only thing O can think of that could fit that price tag…
@MrsSoapAndClay6 ай бұрын
This is what I’m saying! I would have figured it was a carrot seed essential oil based on the price tag, but they’ve listed saponification value and their description says it’s upcycled from the juice and jam industry. Carrot seeds don’t come from the vegetable itself but from the top, and I doubt they’d have wasted seeds from that because the people that are harvesting are taking those heads and harvesting to make more carrots before going to the juice factory. The rabbit hole I went down on this one.
@itsbeauty2u_6 ай бұрын
God, i love when you talk like that...😂
@mahaleylynn26 ай бұрын
The site plainly states Carrot Oil (Macerated). So it's definitely pulp from carrots.
@MrsSoapAndClay6 ай бұрын
The new direction listing does state that plainly! The brambleberry listing does not, it states carrot seed oil. For a million doll hairs. 😂
