NEW DUCK POND VIDEO • Cleaning out the Duck ...
Newest Garden Tour Video • Florida Zone 9 - 10 Sp...
In this video I show you how a large duck pond can be built by yourself with basic hand and power tools. I designed this duck pond to be drain able so I could easily clean it out. I also didn't want to waste a lot of water so I designed it to drain into my vegetable garden. I incorporated many fruiting plants into this design that the ducks shouldn't destroy.
I also have lots of other videos waiting to be edited and uploaded. I'll show the vegetable garden build, my chicken coop rain catcher build, how to grow an Avocado tree, hatching baby turkeys and ducks, as well as many other useful videos on backyard agriculture.

If you enjoyed watching this old video of me building my duck pond be sure to hit the subscribe button and check out my other permaculture videos on my channel. I'm in the process of diy building a huge food forest in my backyard. I've completely transformed this whole backyard into a permaculture paradise. It's almost complete with the duck pond, chicken coop both drain into the vegetable garden. The vegetable garden I kept small because here in Florida it gets too hot for a lot of veggie gardening. Which is why I've focused mostly on fruit trees and fruiting plants. Some people might think there's not a whole lot of fruit trees that will grow in Zone 9 or Zone 10 but I've had some luck growing Zone 8 tree and plants in some shady areas which opens up the door to a lot of varieties of fruiting plants and trees. All of which is necessary for building a food forest. I've tried to incorporate permaculture principles into all my designs, I've even gone back over somethings and redone them because I thought of a more efficient permaculture design. The duck pond for example has been modified, fixed, repaired, altered, and I plan on doing more and more to it. I would like to add a on/off valve for the sprinklers that go to the duck pond because I don't have as many plants as I started with. I'm also going to add landscaping fabric and redo the river rock on the top. There's a bunch of new videos on the duck pond, here's the newest one • Duck Pond Upgrade - Ad...

Thank You, I have some newer videos of the duck pond being cleaned out. The only things I've changed since this older video are the rubber elbow I switched out for a pvc elbow. And the pvc drain with the grate, i knocked out the grate so it doesn't get plugged with feathers and leaves now.

Many years ago I talked to a guy that was building a stone fence by the road. It was a massive task, a total of 1 kilometer or so. But he implemented the idea that every stone he picked up should fit in some way. By doing this he figured out that he would build the fence at least ten times faster...

This is absolutely incredible, and an excellent idea for our ducks/garden! But I would have liked an update on how the plants fared in the long-term and whether some of them reacted badly to the duck feces. Such information can be just as helpful as the pond itself, especially since we've been looking into hydroponics and want to see if the ducks would help or not.

Hi, will the wood sides rot after a couple of years and then all the soil will fall away, especially with the pressure of that weight behind the planks? Just a thought, would it not have been better to use breeze blocks, they're pretty cheap and easy to work with? It does look great!
@TheIslandFarmer321

the pt fence posts around here last 10-15 years before a hurricane snaps them. the water table is really high. the dirt in there doesn't put much pressure on the sides, i have taken that plastic duck pond out and the dirt stayed right where it was. in a decade i could just pound new posts in and replace the deck boards one at a time or replace it with stones like you suggested.

i didn't know this when i built this but this is similar to "duckponics" which uses a water pump in the duck ponds to circulate the duck water through hydroponic plant setups... so its using the same principle kinda. i imagine any way you can get the dirty duck water to spread out through the garden while not getting it directly onto the plants would work good.

I absolutely love this. I was wondering where does the water go at the end of the trench? Do you have a video that shows that?
@TheIslandFarmer321
@TheIslandFarmer321 9 ай бұрын
it just soaks into the ground. that was this island off the coast of florida where water soaks into the ground insanely fast being very lose sand.

Inspiring video, thanks! I'm planning to build something similar, but I was wondering: does your trench gets filled up quickly with duck waste? And do you need to clean it out often? The dirty water is the main issue I have with my current designs.
@TheIslandFarmer321
@TheIslandFarmer321 3 жыл бұрын
yeah thats mostly why i built this, i got sick of emptying the small 25 gallon kiddy pools. this is 270 gallons so it stays clean longer. but i do empty it out every week, if it goes for longer it can start to smell ducky. the trench does get filled up maybe once a month i dig it out with a shovel, but i dont mind its really good fertilizer for the plants.

Friendly tip... instead of gluing the fitting to the pond, buy a bulk head fitting... I use them on my aquarium tanks and my ponds.
@TheIslandFarmer321

ill look those up, i had trouble finding a decent fitting for the drain. i actually used silicone not glue but now i dont even bother. i just pound the fitting into the pipe and its water tight. ive removed the plastic pond a few times and tweaked the pipe under the pond. its works pretty good

how to avoid mosquitoes in duck pond ? I can't add fishes as duck's will eat them
@TheIslandFarmer321
@TheIslandFarmer321 3 жыл бұрын
yeah i thought about this early on because we have a lot of mosquitos. my solution is draining/emptying the duck pond once a week. plus i think the ducks might eat them? Just to help out i put my lemon grass cuttings all around the back side of the duck pond to help too.

@@TheIslandFarmer321 Thanks for your reply. My two ducks make the water dirty within few hours. For now i am changing the water everyday morning. I had put around 15 fishes in the pond. The fishes were bit large for the duck to swallow. But somehow ducks ate the fishes successfully. I too have lemon grass planted, but I don't see it working in my garden :( My ducks are able to catch the mosquitoes. But it catches only on the land but not in the water.

if you change the water out every day the mosquitos are not coming from your pond, they are coming from other source of water. it takes a week? for the mosquito larva to hatch in water

This is good stuff right here and now I want to do something similar. Question? It looked like the waste water was running right into the chicken house, or did it just absorb into the dirt? Where does the crap water end up?
@TheIslandFarmer321
@TheIslandFarmer321 3 жыл бұрын
the "waste trench" goes up to the chicken coop where i have the drains for the water catcher on the coop. the water absorbs into the ground pretty quick here, which might seem crazy if you live in an area with clay in the soil. but we can get 10 inches of rain here in an hour and it will all be gone in another hour.

If water hyacinth or even holding sweet potato, could be used at the surface, they could help purify the water. Put fish line along one side of the pond just above the water surface to hold the water hyacinth close to the side of the pond (and prevent it from floating free into the pond) for a clean look.
@TheIslandFarmer321

the ducks like to eat soft green leaves, the pineapples even get a bit chewed up. the banana shoots dont have leaves until they outgrow the ducks. good idea for a koi pond though

@@TheIslandFarmer321 You're right about that. My ducks do the same. If the plants are cultivated somewhere the ducks don't have access to, then you can supply them (the ducks) with fresh plants on continuous basis. I guess it depends on how many ducks one has. I only have 5 for now, so I can keep my small pond supplied with enough plants. That was an awesome pond that you built, by the way. Very clean. Loved it.

Does duck poop make good fertilizer at all? I know it's really wet and messy and gross, but if it were to be thrown in a bed of peet moss then used in a garden bed, would that be good for plants?
@TheIslandFarmer321

it makes great fertilizer, its a bit gross which is why my system is so neat, i dont have to touch it. and mixing with soil or peat moss can help if its too strong

I want to build a pond on my backyard for some duckies i have a sheep, she has a little barn right now i love the farm animals i hope to able build somenthing similar how you did it, just a question i saw a cat do you have problems with the cats and ducks? I’m a little scared because i have cats from the neighborhood sometimes in my property.

The ducks I have are Rouen Ducks which get big. My cat is nice to all my animals. I've never had a problem with neighborhood cats either. Baby ducklings could be in danger from neighborhood cats though. I raised the baby ducklings in a screened in porch until they were bigger.
