Thank you for the great info! Sometimes stair gauges can be tricky to to get accurate marks because they don't hang down very much over the edge as they are so thin. They are fine on sharp edge materials, but 2x comes with rounded edges and sometimes they are quite rounded or the edge is funky. the gauge wanders off the edge and it rides on the rounded part changing the angle slightly, which would move your marks just a little bit. But that little bit adds up over many feet messing up your rafter length. It probably best to make a rafter gauge out of plywood based on the rise and run you need. Awesome video. Thanks

Excellent tutorial. This is really a step by step instructions. Thank you. I am in the process of building a Shed Roof and I was really confuse on how to mark the ridge cut and the bird mouth. My challenge was that I needed to detemine the pitch, if I only have the ridge cut height, the exterior wall height and the rum from the ridge to the wall.
@Jay-tk7ib5 жыл бұрын
Pitch will be the total rise, in inches, divided by the run, in feet. Just remember the total rise is not from the wall plate to the peak, it's from the height above plate to the peak.

Easy peasy when one has a pitch that calculates easy. I am adding to a garage with a rise of 41" abd a run of 11'2". So how does that work?
@Jay-tk7ib5 жыл бұрын
1st find the slope of your roof, It's easy to measure. Let's say you have a 5/12 slope. Put clip on the #5 of your square's tongue, that is the 1 1/2" side. Then put clip on the #12 of your square's blade (2" side). Now mark the top of your board and step off 11 full steps, as the guy in the video did, and then count 2 more inches, and that's where you'll make your plumb mark for your wall line, and mark out your bird's mouth. Now all you have to do is add whatever overhang you want, and then shorten rafter at bottom for facia board, and at top for ridge board.

I missed where you minis the thickness of the ridge board.1 1/2 overall or 3/4 for one side - 2x board. Confused some.
@HistoricHomePlans5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that bit went by a bit quickly. At 10:00 he marks the "ridge cut". This is a "plumb" cut that lines up exactly with the roof ridge. However, in the end there will a ridge beam 1 1/2" wide that the rafter butts up against. He hasn't accounted for this yet. But after he has finished off the rest of the rafter layout based on the original "ridge cut" mark, he goes back, at 13:30, and adjusts the ridge cut to account for the ridge beam. Since the ridge beam will be 1 1/2 wide lumber, and it will be exactly on the building centerline, half that width, or 3/4", needs to be subtracted from the rafter... The main idea is that you want to lay out your rafter based on the actual roof ridge line. But once you've finished the layout you need to subtract a little from the ridge end of your rafter to make up for the ridge beam thickness.
@michealpeters21105 жыл бұрын
on a lean-to it would be the full thickness or the ridge board or beam.
@georgeshepherd6944 жыл бұрын

Did you choose the 5/12, or is that common , not sure how you came up with that.
@Jay-tk7ib5 жыл бұрын
rhonda toole , if you're working from a blueprint, the slope will be given. If you're working without a blueprint, you can choose whatever slope you want. I assume the guy in the video just used 5/12 as an example.
@Jay-tk7ib5 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Cocchiola Much better to lay out the rafter to the exact run, and then come back and shorten the top for the ridge board. It's a lot simpler than calculating inch fractions. Of course you calculate inch fractions when you need to, but why make it more complicated than it has to be.
@Jay-tk7ib5 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Cocchiola That may work fine for you, but for people trying to learn, I think it will confuse them. Personally, I'm not that good at doing math in my head, so I use a regular calculator.
@Hertog_von_Berkshire3 жыл бұрын
5/12 is a good pitch for demo purposes as it gives a diagonal of exactly 13" per foot of run. 9/12 would similarly give exactly 15" per foot of run (it's a scaled up 3 4 5 triangle). With other pitches, the diagonal isn't a whole number so less simple to grasp when you are learning, though the principles are identical.

Hi Scott. I was wondering if I should include the thickness of the material that I plan on using to cover the walls of the shed before I make my calculations? For example, if I intend to use half inch thick materials on the walls should I plan on using that half inch in my calculations before I do the Step off Method? I'd hate to wind up having the birds mouth laying on the top rail but forget to take into consideration the extra half inch of siding! In your demonstration, you said the the span of the building was 8 feet. Shouldn't you have figured in that extra thickness to your calculations before doing the Step Off Method?
@gigeconomy86775 жыл бұрын
typically no a standard wall is 8' 1 1/8"
@gigeconomy86775 жыл бұрын
sheets are 4x8 and usually do not interfere
@jeffro12454 жыл бұрын
Yes you do have to include your wall sheeting so the birds mouth heel will sit right and the over all length will be correct. If you don't take into account the 1/2 for sheeting then your rafter will be 1/2 short at your ridge board
@awesometopics1988 Жыл бұрын
No u figure that sheathing 1/2 in on the cut for the heel cut when u do the birds mouth ..so 2x4 wall with 1/2 in plywood would give u a 4" in seat cut ..hope this answers ur question

When you cut the depth of your birds mouth doesn’t that change the pitch?
@haxo123 жыл бұрын
I have the same question. Help, please!
@Hertog_von_Berkshire3 жыл бұрын
Took me ages to work that one out. The simple answer is no. TL;DR A rafter is effectively a parallelogram. It's "line length" is exactly the same whether it's measured on the rafter's top edge, bottom edge or on any parallel line in between. One of those parallels is the one that passes right through the right angle point of the birds mouth. This isn't a complete explanation but should help with understanding why the birds mouth doesn't change the pitch.

Totally lost me at the end, 3/4 " and 1 1/2'"? Where does width come into play or why?
@therealsparkman4 жыл бұрын
If you plan on using a ridge beam (the beam that runs down the centre of your roof rafters if you choose to use one) is usually a 2 X ? which are an 1 1/2" thick, so you use half of that to calculate the cut for your rafter which is 3/4". If you don't, you will find that your bird's mouth won't sit on the top plate. Does that help?

Yes he did. He had a 6 inch overhang.
@lynnlard55315 жыл бұрын
@@Jay-tk7ib No, the soffit cut refers to the cut to remove that sharp corner on the bottom of the overhang. i.e. a cut parallel to the ground. to give a flat horizontal surface to accept the soffit.

He is redundant many times. He speaks to the viewer as if they were children. He did not practice prior to making the video the way he had to take large pauses in the beginning and then speak to the camera. Then toward the middle and the end of the KZbin video, he began to speak as if everyone knew all of what he was speaking about. His video writing board was very small and one was unable to read what he was writing down on it. This was unprofessional!
