I remember reading a recounting from a German soldier who was in Normandy during D-Day. The airborne infantry were dropping all over the region, and he comes across a paratrooper private who had died in the jump under a tree. He figures he should grab what he can, opens his pack, and when he sees what's inside, he recalled that _that_ was the moment he knew that Germany had lost the war. Inside were cigarettes, coffee, sugar and chocolate. These were so rare for German troops that only officers were allowed to have them, if they could get them at all. The fact that a regular Private had all these luxury goods showed just how well equipped they were and the vast resources they had, which the Germans just didn't. Interesting little tidbit.

Again, very good insights. The 1st and 29th landed on Omaha and the 4th landed on Utah, or close to it. My favorite exchange in Band of Brothers was when Randleman asked why Sobel hates us and Winters replies, "Sobel doesn't have Easy Company private Randleman. He just hates you." I think that bit of humor showing he felt the companies pain made them aware that this officer was in it with them. Dick Winters is one of the finest officers to serve in the US military.

The interesting thing about the vets from Easy is the consensus about Sobel being instrumental in keeping many of them alive later after they got rid of him, despite hating the SOB for his cruelty and tyrannical leadership. No substitute for physical fitness and being a well disciplined and gelled killing unit. It's also said they thought so much of their training after the war realizing how it benefited them, some embraced Sobels son at Easy reunions decades later. All the men of this war are heroes, including both of my grandpas, but there is something special about Easy Company and their accomplishments.

While firing before a suprise attack might be considered a mistake, a gunshot among artillery can go unnoticed. I don't know modern american/german tactics about artillery but in Greece, an artilery like that with 4 canons, when it starts firing in a barage it goes like this. The first fires and immedietly the second then the third and then the fourth, and the artillery men in Greek army train to reload really fast so the first canon will fire right after the 4th canon fires. So a single rifle gun shoot I assume wasnt heard from the artillery men, which would be 100% focused on reloading and firing again and again. So that one single german if not been immedietly shoot he could turn and alert the canon crew, which would I assume as in Greece stop firing and pick up their guns to defend their possition, and if they had done so it would be imposible for Winters to assult them. The machine gun thats on the look out, its taken out I think almost at the same time as winters drops the man. And it might be a few seconds, but if you even trained to reload artillery you know you are so focused (especially I assume even more in a real war than I was in training) that you can almost miss the grenades exploding. So you have *CRAZY ARTILLERY NOISE* repeating with just less than a second of "calm" and you have a riffle shoot and 3 grenades that make WAY less noise than what we see in movies. If a 105 canon is a 10 in noise an assult grenade would be a 3 compared to it. So yeah Winters shooting was smart and the right choice, had the man escaped and run back I think it would had been a different story, I dont think they would have lost cause the men takng the trench in the machine gun possition would be able to move in trench and throw some grenades while Winters machine gun kept the artillery men heads down, but maybe there would more than just 3 casualties. (And a rifle firing noise next to the 105 I would give a -1 )

You know, 50 artillery men vs 12 or 24 infantry and it starts to click. 8404 devil doc here and what I would like to add is perspective on mentality. Paratroopers trained both physically and mentally to kill the enemy close. Small unit tactics, room clearing, fire and maneuver versus people who thought all the shooting was going to happen far away. So it starts to make sense why winters said it was training and guts. It doesn't diminish, just perspective.

Fair point, though I will add those weren't artillerymen, they were paratroopers. The artillery batteries' men had deserted and the German 6th Fallschirmjägerregiment (Parachute Infantry) were manning the guns.

Anyone with a fascination with history can probably appreciate it as it is easily some of the most viscerally impactful and kinetic depictions of early 19th century artillery in any form of media I've seen, not to mention based on a historic event which not many seem to be aware of.
