I believe if you hook up two lipos in parallel that are charged at different voltages there is a potential of some lipo damage. IE, connect a 3s at say 10.6v in parallel to a second at 12.6v, would there not be a large current between the two lipos to equalize voltage. I haven't tried it, but I suspect you'd have a couple warm puffy lipos after that. If that is not the case, please ignore, but if it is the case you might want to highlight that warning/note. It is mentioned on your warning page, but if it is missed the results could be unfortunate.
@Painless3606 жыл бұрын
Connecting any batteries in parallel with different voltages will result in a current flowing equal to the difference divided by the internal resistance of the batteries. If you calculate the amperage it's not massive unless you have two packs with wildly different voltages. That currect that flows can be above the 'c' rating of the packs until the charge starts to equal out. Bottom line - you have to be careful, hence the warnings and my advice to just buy a 6s pack now rather than use 2 x 3s packs.. ;)

Some are one cord that splits into 2, and some are shaped like a triangle sort of. From your video I'm guessing the triangle one is the series, and the straight one that splits in the middle is parallel. My other question is, can the current flow both ways? Meaning, if we were using the parallel diagram of yours that's at the 6:45 mark, you state what will come out of the single connector, to whatever you are powering. Now lets say I wanted to hook a 5s or 6s 3000mah, to the single end and I wanted to power one of those little 1s charging boards, better yet, to stay with the diagram, lets say I had 3 of them and I had a ton of whoop batteries to charge, will the current go the other direction? The best practices I've learned about composed batteries is to ALWAYS buy/charge/discharge the batteries packs together like they are married (until death ^^). It's the same process for Li-Po or Li-Ion. - Buy them together (understand same brand/model/capacity) can provide a good chance they came from the same batch or a close one and have similar internal caracteristics. A composed pack is worth the weakest element of the assembly. If they are quite similar, the pack should have good and consistent performance/lifespan/charge time/... - Charge/discharge them together ensure they age the same way and keep the consistency of the behaviour of the composed pack. Finally, to prevent some issues, I mention a serial build will forgive more easily the slight differences between the batteries than a parallel one. In an heterogenous (new&old, charged¬ charged enough batteries) parallel pack, the batteries will try to balance themselves before powering the model, the efficiency/autonomy of the pack will be awful and not to mention the monitoring of the elements can't be accurate and can lead to an over charge/discharge of an element of the pack. It can be really hazardous. ("Come on baby light my fire... Come on baby light my fire... Try to set the night on fire..." - Not the original meaning but quite applicable... ^^) That's why I suggest, when making a serial & parallel build, to start putting the batteries in parallel first (each small group is more easilly manageable) and after put all the groups in series. For the picky ones, we can also add some diodes in the parallel builds to prevent current exchange between the batteries. A PAB (power assembly board) with sensors, diodes and safety fuses can be really handy for the big builds. My 2 cents.

Another theoretical question. Are there multiple ways to wire a particular series and parallel configuration? Or, you could create the higher voltage series packs and then hook up the parallel strings... Hope this makes sense and thank you.

What are the risks of the" push-me/pull-you" effect of connecting Lipos in parallel? While the're being used, cross current drain should be minimal, but I used to work with large computer UPS backup systems with batteries in parallel, and they start to 'fight' each other if left connected without constant charging. I've seen guys unplug the Y connector from the ESC but leave the two Lipos connected together at the end of a day which looks risky to me.
@Painless3606 жыл бұрын
The current that would flow between two batteries if the voltage is a different would be the difference in voltage / the internal resistance of the actual packs themselves (usually 5-15 milliohms per cell). In practice this is usually self-limiting, and quickly drops to a level that safe for both batteries. The danger is that if the voltage is a wildly different and the internal resistance is low, then the current can be above the safe charging current rating and potentially damage one of the packs. If the packs are close in voltage then it should be fine..

Making sure they're both equally charged before doing so. So If I did this with my 10s5p, it would be a 10s10p connector, doubling the range capacity while keeping the same voltage? Interesting.

I run a 4s 5000mah battery in my quad. I want to run two in parallel so I get 4s 10000mah. Will this affect the ESCs, FC, gimbal etc? All I want is longer flight time. I don't race or anything just take videos with my camera on the drone.
@KanedaNLD6 жыл бұрын
swankypotter It won't effect your electronics. Voltage stays the same. On the other hand, it will be effected by the weight of the packs. Your motors have to work a little harder to lift your copter.
@swankypotter6 жыл бұрын
Jos van der Weide yes I understand the weight will not help but the flight time will over power that anyway. Thanks for the reply
@paulg54376 жыл бұрын
If all you're looking for is longer flight times then apart from weight and manoverability as Jos mentioned, it should be ok. BUT, with 2 Lipos you now have double the max current (so if one is 30C you now have 60C) and you need to check your ESC and motor capabilities (not to mention the wiring current capacity). Lee has a good article on this site on the 10% rule of Battery, ESC & Motor).
@Painless3606 жыл бұрын
As others have done an amazing job of answering you, I'll answer quickly too :) connecting in parallel the voltages are the same so the electronics will be ok. It's just like plugging in pack with more mAh.
@softart52355 жыл бұрын
Sorry to bother,Can two 3.7 Tiny lipo's need a balance charger instead of one usb charger?
@Painless3605 жыл бұрын
As those batteries are only one cell then they dont need to be balanced (you need two or more cells for that)... hope that helps..
@paulr355611 ай бұрын
So conceivably you could make a 12s 5000mah using 2x 3s in series, together with 3x 2s 5000mah in series, so you have two 6s 5000mah in series again for 12s 5000mah. Just asking as a tester or emergency electric skateboard battery DIY. Cheers again
@Painless36011 ай бұрын
Mixing and matching different packs can be dangerous as the resulrant battery pack is only as strong as the weakest link and can overstress pieces easily.. Be very careful.
@paulr35563 ай бұрын
@@Painless360adding a 10s and a 2s in series, same spec18650 batteries cells, to make a 12s is okay? Safer and less connections, 2x batteries only to connect.
@ZubKS6 жыл бұрын
One thing I don’t understand is when you connect in serial how the mah does not increase because you have two batteries with 2000mah worth of charge yet you keep only 1000mah? I assure this is because double the voltage so the batteries drain twice as fast?
@Painless3606 жыл бұрын
The current that flows through the model also flows through each of the cells too, using capacity at the same time so you don't get double. That's how the cells connect in a lipo park..

@Painless3602 жыл бұрын
If you connect them together you'll end up with a 66.6v, 5000mAh pack as you can only discharge as much as the lower rating will allow..

@@Painless360 ok that makes sense. I'm just trying to learn something new and I'm teaching myself all about this subject. I'm just my better is like I said 6s65c discharge 5000mah22.2 v111wh . I get in series the voltage doubles and mah stays the same and parellel the mAh gets greater and volts stay uncharged. But what I didn't hear I probably should rewatch cause you probably did say.. Lol

Thank you for this video because I can tag the people on my channel trying to tell me that by adding two 7.4 there's no way you can do that to a 4S and I'm thinking to myself how brain dead are these people. And you explained it perfectly sir so and what's great I just noticed you have the same exact connectors that I have. What I love about those connectors is there is so many people including myself that had a bunch of 7.4 volts laying around and we all thought we have to buy some new 3s or 4S or 6s. Like the 6s those are super expensive but you can do the same thing with two three as batteries
