EASY CROCHET BEACH BAG (July's Gift of Crochet)
The Stitch Sessions #44
Happy July everyone!
Beach weather is here. We're off to the cottage or the lake or anywhere we can enjoy open water ad beautiful sunshine:) This month we are celebrating all things Summer / Beach / cottage related and we are starting off with this fabulous crochet beach bag. It's easy to make and you can customize it to whatever size you like! Perfect gift for all those July birthdays;)
BAG MEASUREMENTS:
Depth - 13 inches (33cm)
Length - 25 inches (63.5 cm) when lying flat
Bottom of the bag has a width of 5 inches (12.75 cm) and length of 20" (51cm)
*Depending on your gauge, your measurement may vary slightly larger or smaller.
ANY CORRECTIONS LISTED BELOW WILL BE REFLECTED IN THE WRITTEN PATTERN. Link below!
WRITTEN PATTERN : shorturl.at/mAKP1
16:30 *** NOTE -CORRECTION - I say to place 2 DC into the stitch but I meant to say 2 SC
You will see that I do place 2 SC
***NOTE- CORRECTION - there is an edit booboo at approximately 23:10
21:20 - there should only be 6 sts between the two st marker at the end of Rnd 3. Not sure how I ended up with so many sts but there should be 6 sts on the rounded end not 9 at the end of this rnd
23:30 - where there should be 9 sts between the stitch markers. It shows me going into the slip st of the previous round but then it cuts to me skipping that st. When I skipped that st is the correct way to continue so that you do indeed have 9 sts between the markers.

I loved how you show demonstrations up till 4-5 row but to stop for the beginners to leave us alone To finish the rest I was disappointed. You did show the drawing giving us an idea, but I’m a visual learner. I withdrew from watching your video as a result. I really was excited about making this. Thank you

Hi Karen, thank you for your feedback. I stopped at that point as subsequent rows are a repetition of the previous row. If I filmed every single row, the video would be extremely long and it's pretty long already;) I'm very happy to answer any questions you may have on any challenges you may be facing. Please do comment again or email me directly at info@crochetcrafty.com and I'm very happy to talk you through any of the rows that might be a little difficult for you. Hope that helps!

I was gonna comment about the stitch markers because I don't have those. But around 10:02 to 10:08 you said the ones you have are not reliable. As it seems it's not. But was gonna say my Mom used safety pins which I only found 2 in my house because my Mom never taught me how to sew. But I know I have a sewing kit and safety pins and all that in the garage which I don't feel like fighting with the garage door to go look for them. But anyways I'm still at the beginning of this video and I used different colored yarns for my stitches. And the 2 safety pins I found. So if you don't have either. I recommend tying a knot of yarn on the stitches. You can cut them out later. It's working for me and that's how I have to deal with it. I have Bobby pins too. But I feel those won't be reliable for me as you see in the video her stitch marker fell out. Tying a knot from the yarn takes a bit with out loosing the yarn or it comes unraveling. So I really recommend the safety pins or even a safety button I know I have a ton of those. It's almost like the safety pin. My Mom's stitches was always point and she never lost a safety pin. Hope my tips help. 😁 Also around 16:45 she said to crochet 2 double crochets in the same stitch. But she did 2 single crochet. Because I looked at my work and it didn't match hers. So rewind 10secs and then I watched how she did it. She said 2 double crochets in same stitch. But she did 2 single crochets. That can be very confusing especially to some new learners. It's been almost 10 years for me sence the last time I crochet. But it is like riding a bike you don't forget.

when doing the stripes in the continuous round how do you keep the beginning rows of each new color change uniform? Each new row of a new color the stitch is moved over

Yes it does. My secret is that I made the seem go up the side of the bag. You can still see the jump but I’m ok with that. There are some crocheters that create amigarumi that have great techniques for getting perfect colour matches. I think @eliserosecrochet covers this. Might be helpful. Rather than back posting the first row of HDC, wouldn't it be easier to do the HDC in the back loops?
@TheStitchSessions
@TheStitchSessions Жыл бұрын
You can absolutely do that if it was just for asthetic reasons but I preferred to do the back posts here because it picks up the whole post and gives the bag more strength. Make sense?

Thank you! For my bag I used 2 balls of the Bernat home Dec yarn and they each have approx 317 yards to a ball. Now depending on how larger you'd like to make yours, I would go with 2 balls if you want to make yours as large as mine. (It's pretty big!) So, about 650 yards would be my suggestion. Please do keep me posted on how yours works out! -K

Hi Diane, I know what you mean about the yarn. This was great to work with. I would recommend finding any yarn that has a a cotton and polyester blend or a cotton and nylon blend. They would work great. You could also use Bernat handicrafter cotton and use two strands held together. The texture will just come out a little different from the ones that have a nylon or polyester but still nice. Let me know what you end up going with and how it turns out!👍

Hello, I'm having a really big problem with this pattern. When I say problem I'm talking exactly at 23:10 when you have 9 stiches between the stitch marker, then you add a sc and you have 9 again. It doesn't make sense... shouldn't you have 10? Since you're adding another sc into the 9 sc. No matter how many times I attempt this pattern, I always end up with 10 instead of 9 and it ends up butchering my entire work. I'm only 15 years old and I've been crocheting for 3 years now but this is still extremely confusing and it doesn't add up at all! I'm trying to make a beach bag for my aunt's birthday coming up in 6 days, I was hoping to finish this bag in a few days, but obviously I cannot when this pattern makes 0 sense. It's a beautiful bag and I would love to know exactly how to make it. I'm sorry if this is coming off a little rude, I've been trying to work on this exact part for 2 days already and every time I attempt, it always fails, because of the exact time mark (23:10) Please try to explain/help me. I don't have much time especially with school during week days. I'm going to try to dm you on instagram as well for a faster reply.

Ok, I see what happened. There was a little editing booboo. The last stitch was shown to go into the slip stitched loop of the previous round but then the very next clip shows me skipping it. The one with me skipping it and going into the next stitch is correct. This will give your 9 stitches. Sorry about that! I do hope you are able to finish it in time for your aunt's birthday. I know you have a tight schedule. Please do let me know how you make out. I will be sure to add a correction in the description. Good luck! -K

Am I the only one who's having troubles with this??? I tried it 3 times but around min 27 my stitchmarkers are NOT at your level , your marker was suddenly 4 or 5 stitches later? (also I was confused because at the start you had 2 green stitchmarkers there and now I see a purple and a green one?). In the first 3 rounds I don't see the pattern (one time you start the 2 sc in the 60th stitch, the other round you start in the stitch after and 1 time you use a chain 1? - between minutes 15.40 and 16.20 where the marker falls off is also confusing to me). I understand your drawing and the pattern but for me I could use 2 or 3 more rows of explanation. I am sorry and I don't want to offend you at all!! But I think there are some inconsistencies in the video, which makes it hard for a beginner ( although I am not a beginner :-) I will continue my work and I am sure it will turn out great (nobody sees the bottom part haha)
@TheStitchSessions
@TheStitchSessions 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Isabelle! Glad you left a comment. I know it can be a bit challenging with all these rounds. So hopefully, I can clarify some of these areas for you. Let's start with the area around 15.40 where the stitch marker fell out and I replaced it. Becasue I sip stitched to join the round, I needed a ch1 to create the height I needed to begin the next round but I didn't really count it as a stitch as you might notice I sc twice into it. I replaced the marker into last sc where I increased to try and "contain" the rounded section. Because the loops of stitches sit to the right, you will notice that after many rounds it looks like your stitch markers are moving or shifting. So when you get to min 27, and a little bit after that when I am finished the bottom of my bag, you may notice that my stitch markers also don't sit perfectly even across from each other;) This is the way of the stitch sometimes. LOL You might find it helpful to check out my video on understanding parts of the stitch as a refresher. Hopefully it will make more sense. I will insert a link here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4WVeGaQpr6VoM0 Now if this is still a bit unclear, please do feel free to email some pictures of your work and I'll be glad to have a closer look, just in case I a, missing the mark on your questions. info@crochetcrafty.com Looking forward to seeing your finished bag! -K

@@TheStitchSessions Thank you sooo much for your very quick reply , and first of all, sorry for my mail! I got so upset because I couldn't figure it out :-). I followed step by step, but now I am thinking that maybe you did somewhere an entire row (2 times 60 plus the corners) and that I missed this ? Or that a small part is missing when editing the film? But no worries for me anymore :-) , I catched up my missing stitches by putting 2 sc here and there and I am full on track now!!! Once I started row 6 everything went very smoothly and I promise I will send you some pictures of my progress and the finished version of this beautiful bag!! (still only at row 8 now :-) Thank you once again and have a beautiful day, Isabelle
