Easy Crochet Summer Vest Tutorial - Crossroads Vest Crochet Tutorial

Hi Friends, Ali here! In today's tutorial we will be making the Crossroads Vest! This summer vest is full of beautiful texture and features a mesh fabric, that's light airy, and perfect for layering on warmer days!

Please make a gauge swatch before starting to ensure proper sizing!
Gauge Swatch:
For the most accurate measurement do not stretch your swatch when measuring and only measure the XTR stitches and from row 2 up (not the FSC).
Row 1: FSC 18
Rows 2-8: CH 3 & turn. XTR across until 1 ST remains. TR in last ST. (18)
17 stitches by 7 rows = 8”by 8” square.
Adjust hook size up or down to meet gauge.

I'm making a variation on this with the crossed stitches and every other row is just triple crochets with spaces so it will be even more airy. tried using a 9mm hook and it just wasnt working out with my yarn ... i think because i crochet too loosely ... so I switched to 6.5 and am making it at the 5x so its a oversized... xD will see how it turns out haha.

Just do a regular chain - then single crochet.

I did a regular chain stitch for the numbers given in my size and then I did a row of single crochet in the back loops and achieved the same look. For these rows only I used one hook size larger for the stretch. The foundation single crochet is too confusing and frustrating for me. 😄

I am adding another comment because I have a question. How do you wash this? Does it shrink much? I don’t know if you’ve used Lily’s Sugar n’ Cream before, that’s what I’m going to be using.

This vest inspires me! You clearly explain how to make the cross stitches and the FSC. Those are two that for me need to be practiced. I can also see how it would be easy to alter the armhole decreases to add a sleeve for those that get a little chilled or just want to have a sleeve. Thanks for a great tutorial!

Hi! You probably just have a looser tension that I. You will need to go down a hook size or 2. Here is the gauge swatch pattern if you want to check: Row 1: FSC 18 Rows 2-8: CH 3 & turn. XTR across until 1 ST remains. TR in last ST. (18) 17 stitches by 7 rows = 8”by 8” square. Adjust hook size up or down to meet gauge.

Hi it’s such a beautiful vest. I’m making a very big version (98 chains for the back and 49 chains for the front panel). currently I’m making the front panel row 42. I have to make up to row 53, I dun think I can continue decreasing stitch. Any advice?

So I’m leaving it here 😊 I appreciate this pattern being in a wide range of sizes, I often make things for my 20 year old daughter and myself, but we are vastly different sizes. We like a lot of the same things. Finding patterns is difficult. So thank you for creating and sharing this. I have some Ecru Lily’s Sugar n’ Cream that I can’t wait to use. I am self conscious about my upper body shape and size, so I enjoy layering cute clothing to compliment my figure. This will be nice for the summer! Quick question, this will be my first wearable crochet item, and I was wondering about putting a border around the neckline. What stitch would you recommend for that? I realize I will have to extend the border down the front centers as well. Thank you!

You're only chaining 36 for a small if you measure that that's only 12 in wide how would that fit anyone

The small size has a width of 17" across and a circumference of 34" around. If you're only getting 15" in width, your tension must be tighter than mine so you'll want to go up a hook size or 2. You can check your gauge with the gauge pattern included in the video description.

Can I use worsted yarn for this project, my fingers have become sore from using cotton yarns.

Yes you can! It will create a lighter vest since cotton yarn is heavy but it will still work!

For the back panel for 2X size you'll want to do 7 rows of decreases (until you have 24 stitches remaining).

If you use thinner yarn and a smaller hook will need to adjust the pattern to be wider and longer, but yes it would would with those adjustments

In the top right corner of the screen where I give the written instructions, the number in parentheses at the end of each row is how many stitches to work for each size starting with the smallest size.

Thanks for sharing this spring and summer vest tutorial. It’s so cute. I’m using the Lion Brand Feels Like Butta mint aqua. Actually, it’s called Seagreen, but I call it mint aqua 😃. I’m going by inches instead of rows ‘cause I’m using the 4.5 crochet hook. The first time I used the 5mm crochet hook since I was using the weight 4 Hobby Lobby yarn at the time. I like the yarn you are using. What brand is it and where do I find it at?
