I literally just returned a dust deputy $54. I thought that was overpriced, turns out I needed the super dust deputy $150 Not happening. Now it’s figure out what I can scrounge up . This is by far the best set up for a DIY cyclone shop vac vacuum. "easy peasy" and it works

I am making one of these right now and this helped a lot. Be aware that chlorine buckets are vented and don't make a tight seal. There is a slight gap between the lid and bucket. Round surgical tubing makes a great gasket.

I've made a very simple separator the same way and the only draw back I found was the shop vac attachment that is cut into the side of the bucket gets clogged pretty easy if a large piece gets sucked up. I fixed that by flushing up the attachment to the inside curve of the bucked. And I found I liked it so much I cut the bottom of my bucket out leaving a 1 inch lip all the way around and secured it to the lid of another and bucket then just snap it on and it doubles your dust catching capacity haha love the videos by the way!

I was kinda worried about that as well, I do plan on just using it for the CNC so there shouldn't be to much load on it but making it flush would be a easy fix. Thanks for watching!

If it hadn't been said before, I'll say it now...how effective to actually use shop vac attachments vs buying PVC fittings for the build. Like many, I have lots of attachments I never use but are set for the larger diameter hoses. Save a few $$ using them up vs searching for and having to modify PVC elbows. Kudo's for showing the build as I haven't as yet built one but paid over $40 for a kit from Rockler "in the event of" but recently bought PVC fittings I'll take back. Having an inground pool that I've over 20 leftover 100# pail buckets w screw on lids great for storage, I'll be using one as it's heavier for a base but better wall construction also. Key thing is the extra vacuum cleaner also. Great video

What a good idea. I did the same thing (with the exact same bucket) and I really like it. It’s really easy to do and will help to preserve my shop vac. I burn the motor of my previous one cause I didn’t use bag (too much dust and wood). Now i can use bag in the shop vac without having to change it two time per day. Thank you very much.

Using the wand end was a great idea ! The norm has been to scribe cut the end of a tube or block of wood to the radius of the bucket which took some time. I made mine that way and it wasn't any more efficient than the simple way you did yours. I also used the hot melt glue gun and it has held up great, and quick too. Jeff

Very cool, something that may make it even more efficient is to maybe add a little metal screen to the port going in to your main vacuum. Very cool design though. I used to see vacuum parts like this at the thrift stores all the time. I have to start looking for them again. Thanks for the cool idea.

Thanks for the video, I made an identical setup out of a 5gal pail with excellent results. I used tape for the inlet seal just to test it & was amazed. I have seen many people that add a baffle plate but I can not see it helping much. I am considering placing the bucket on a 55gal drum & may use the base of the bucket as a baffle. Time for some trial & error. Thx again

Great video. I think I will put a piece of aquarium carbon filter at the top suction line, in the bucket. That stuff doesn't restrict air flow and should trap the other 3-4%. I love design won't cost a penny to use stuff around shop that I already have with little fabrication. Perfect and simple. Thanks

You can increase th efficiency by adding a baffle, made of wood or plastic, inside the bucket and above the port where dust enters. You make a hole in the middle for the outlet, with this the particles that are flying and normally doesnt settle down fast are trapped below the baffle and spin around the walls falling. The clean air stays in the middle. Thanks for this easy to make method.

Nice, quick design Ryan, but it needs to go a step further. Yea, I made a Thien separator like this and can confirm that the baffle makes a big difference in the fine stuff. Also, one of the biggest challenges for this baffleless design is that as the debris builds up inside the bucket, the swirling air starts swirling and agitating the already captured debris, which then gets sucked into the vac's filter, oops. Even with my Thien version, I noticed this when I checked the bucket capacity after a bunch of use, and saw that the debris was getting piled up pretty high/close to the baffle, which calms the air in the lower chamber. Without the baffle, the debris will obviously short-circuit the separation in short order.

I used the same attachment to create a separator. The problem is when the pieces are too big for the hole. They block the suction and will collapse the container. I even cut the inside of it away as much as possible and it still clogs. Just keep this in mind.

I've seen other "20 minute dust separators" on KZbin... the difference with yours is that it looks as though you really were able to make it in 20 minutes! :o) The pool chemical bucket is a great idea; it looks to be much stronger than the hardware store buckets most folks are using, and the screw lid is a real winner! Now... who do I know with a pool?

I wonder how well this will work if its scaled up. I've got the 2ph harbor freight dust collector you see all over youtube. It uses 4inch hose, and I don't think they make shop vac accessories that big. So I'm thinking about recreating your idea using a 32gallon trash can and some 4inch aluminum duct.

A thien baffle would help a lot with the seperation in that set up, simple scrap wood circle, pretty sure a 10 9/16 would be the diameter and take 1.125" off 270° or 3/4of the diameter and put the last 1/4 below the inlet

Nice job! One question - has the hot glue held up well over time? When I watched the video, I couldn't help but think that I probably would have used a good construction adhesive in a caulk gun. This is not a criticism, just curious - I rarely use hot glue, but maybe I should use it more. Thanks for posting.
