Very interesting mix. I’ve used the Cichlid salts for my guppy tanks and it helps quite a lot. But I’m almost out so I’ll be trying this mix. Also got some Heterandria Formosa at the auction and I think they’d appreciate the higher tds as well. 👍

Great video, I am in the process of setting up a 75 gallon for African peacocks and i am on a well with my water PH 8.6. Will this be ok for the fish or will need to lower it when adding my water for the first time? I have read where to keep the PH at a constant and not to chase it.

Hey Zenzo, thanks for sharing. You saved me a lot of money.😀 quick question the only thing I’m a little scared about is the marine salt. Is that safe to use in a freshwater tank?
@TazawaTanks3 ай бұрын
Yes, it is safe to use. It has more minerals and trace elements in it.

I did a good job today. I went to the fish shop. I normally buy stuff from and ask the guy if they had any ciclid lake salt he's like. Yeah, we should he looks, but he doesn't find it, so he asks the guy who's the owner owner tells him that the buffer will work. So now I'm pretty sure I just overdosed my fish with Seachem Tanganyika Buffer because my 30-gallon is now cloudy when it was perfectly clear for weeks before I added that now granted I did first a teaspoon and a half but when I checked my GH and KH they weren't changing after I got to 12 drops I counted each drop testing the check so I figured I'd add some more and well now my tank is cloudy I turned off all my filters hopefully it will sink and clear up in a few days and I'll have to see what I'll have to fix like a water change because the tank will have way crazy water parameters.

Zenzo when you mention to try it in a 5 gallon bucket I would like to check something with you. Trying the Baking soda first will affect KH I got it easy to dial in. Epsom Salt will increase GH but doesn’t Reef Salt as well? At least my SeaChem Cichlid Lake Salt does.

I would add it slowly over a couple of weeks.

During a water change I fill a trash barrell then pre-mix buffer into the new water and pump it into the tank but I would love to fill directly from the sink! Have you ever have any trouble shocking fish by not pre-mixing the buffer into the new water before you fill after a water change? Putting directly into the tank during a water change.
@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
No, I’ve never had any issues adding it directly into the tank as long as it is temperature matched.

So which of these products adds mineral to the cichlid tank? I am in Florida so im trying to calculate all the information.
@TazawaTanks2 жыл бұрын
The reef/marine salt would have the majority of the minerals and trace elements that you’d want to add.

I have just set up a tank with African Cichlid sand. Have an hob filter. My ph is on the high side 8.4, but the hardness is awfully low. We’ve got super soft water like 25 when tested. It sounds like your parameters are similar. Will this method solve my issue or do I need to look into keeping a different type fish?
@TazawaTanks4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this will help if you have something in your tank to help retain it (like crushed coral, aragonite, etc.).
@edfordify4 жыл бұрын
Tazawa Tanks thank you so much. I’m not stocking with fish until I get it in the right parameters. I added some today, but I’m going in small increments. I’ll retest in a day or so after the water runs through the filter a bit.

Will the Carib sea African Cichlid sand substrate help retain it? That is what I have in there now.
@PaulMartin615 жыл бұрын
After this is all said and done, using your 'mix' what are your numbers? You start with a pH of 8.6 and tds of 30. How do you dose? ____/gallon of water?
@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
Paul Martin the pH stays in the mid 8s, but the TDS goes up to between 200-300 depending on how much I add. I used to measure out precise amounts, but now I just dump in a couple of scoops during each water change. Probably about 3-4 tablespoons for 50 gallons of fresh water.

Dear friends I hv 90 gal tank with 16 peacock cichlid & 4 parrot fish i watch your video and start add 10 teaspoon =50 gr of rock salt and 10 teaspoon of Epsom salt =50 gr together by mixing both in start now when i change water i calculate and add again how much water changed and all parameter like ph 8.1, ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate max 30 then I change water. I am adding salt from last 1 year all fishes ok, my 1 friend said don't add Epsom salt as all fishes are ok only add rock salt, add epsom salt when fishes are ill they hv internal parasites or constipation so i was confused plz tell me what is best, is it OK to add rock and Epsom salt in cichlid tank in this quantity same time or not
@edgarrivera4488 Жыл бұрын
Epsom salt is a laxative. Too much can harm the fish. It can be good to clan the fish out but can also be a good buffer. I personally don’t use it. I have hard water and just use sea salt and baking soda .

@TazawaTanks4 жыл бұрын
It depends on your water. Every area will be different. You will want to test your water for kH, gH and pH to really know what you need. I add a couple of table spoons per water change. I no longer measure.

Awesome idea on the DIY buffer.. Can you recommend a place where I can order some Shell Dwellers from ?? I am going to wait until Spring to have anything shipped, unless I can find a source that will ship properly in Cold temps.. They can put in a couple of those hand warmer packs and ship over-night.. I Really, Really need to find a source where I can get some Neolamprologus Daffodil or some Shell Dwellers like Lamprologus Ocellatus.. Those are the two kinds of fish that I want to start breeding.. Here where I live there are No good shops to buy fish from.. We have the two big box stores here.. I have looked at both and they Do Not take care of their tanks or fish so I will Not buy anything from them except for an aquarium, from time to time.. Any advise or opinion would be Greatly Appreciated !! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.. Much Respect 2 U
