Completely agree! Mine didn’t turn out “perfect”, but that was more due to the lumber, definitely not due to the instructions! One thing that I would recommend is to do the process as the video shows: In the SAME order! I did the cuts as well as all of the drilling, countersink, safety pilot holes, etc. at one time as well as sanding the dowels. I did this because I knew that I was having back surgery in the next few days and I wanted everything to be ready to go when I felt like finally hanging the shelves... I had to go back and re-do a bunch of things due to this...(again- totally MY fault 100%). But the biggest pain was that I didn’t sand down the dowels enough...”lightly sanding” them was NOT what I considered lightly! Took way more sanding than I would have thought to get the actual shelves to easily slide on and off! So, if you decide not to do in order of the video/instructions...be forewarned!

The tools required for this can be gotten for around as much as you’d pay for the shelves, Pre-made. BUT, you can use the tools for further projects :) Realistically all the tools you need is a drill and drill bits. You can hand sand it, and have it cut by the store, or spend $30 on a circular saw :) definitelyblook into a cheap drill and circular saw. You could prob find at a garage sale for cheap, too! Heck Facebook garage sale sites. They sell for next to nothing at garage sales and things bc people don’t typically go there for tools

Yeah I also appreciate it when the builders I’m watching are black. Makes a much better video. ???? Is there some stereotype that white guys have worse vids or something? I’m genuinely confused. Btw I was being sarcastic saying it’s better when they’re black. I don’t actually care what race they are

Very good method for making floating shelves!!! After a lot of research I decided on this method and it worked great. A couple of things to keep in mind, my home is a older home and has lath and plaster walls so they are not 100% flat and true so I had to do some minor sanding of the attachment bracket, secondly drill the holes before cutting to 1 1/2", I forgot and was a bit of a pain. I ended up making the 1/2" dowels a bit longer, they extended 4" into the shelf. I went with a routered ogee edging on the top of the shelves to get rid of the rounded edge of the 2X6. I plan on making more shelves.

Definitely a new take on the floating shelf. Only thing I would do differently is add a washer to the screws going into the wall. This would add more surface area for security of the mounting wood. Great job, keep it up

This is great. I've been wanting to do a unique floating shelf piece on my one wall, but wanted to avoid having to use finish grade pieces to build out the shells, especially since I wanted them to be 2" and not 4-5" thick. These are perfect. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks for posting the video. Just finished up a set of shelves for the bathroom using some live edge material left over from another project. You've got a good eye and a steady hand to drill the dowel holes for the shelves freehand. I ended up making a jig to hold the shelves and used a drill press to bore the holes. Have a great day

Wife has been trying to find "doable" floating shelves and these were them. I ended up doing screws into all three dowels because i ended up with a small gap where I made the rip cuts. I'd suggest wood gluing the dowels into the small piece against the wall, too. As a beginner, DIY'er I appreciate the video and look forward to more

I don't understand why to put the screws in the dowels. Just to stain it? But then you take them out when you mount the shelf?
@suzannereed6645
@suzannereed6645 3 жыл бұрын
Jessica MacMurtrie to hold the shelf in place once mounted. With woodworking, oftentimes you do a lot of construct/deconstruct before you have your final product. In this case, you want to have all holes drilled before you stain/varnish.

@@suzannereed6645 Right. Thanks! I get it now, he just didn't really talk about putting a screw in the dowel, then removing it when hanging it up, then replacing it after the shelf is up. And since this was my first woodworking project, I was confused at first, but it makes sense.

Beware Iif you choose to glue...if the dowels don't align perfectly straight you will have a hell of a time getting the shelf back together.
