Ok, we went out today instead of yesterday. It was too cold yesterday. This tutorial is legit! We cleaned up on perch today! We used both an ultra light and light action rod and they both hooked the top of the mouth perfectly. No missed fish at all. Thank you again! This will be my go to deadstick now!

thanks for making this video. I made five and used them last weekend and they worked amazing. I like the sound of the mouse trap snapping which grabs one's attention. The hook setter hooked every trout that set it off. Caught my Idaho trout limit in an hour and a half, trout were between 17" to 22".

Thanks, I think I had a similar experience as you. I started out connecting the rod to the trigger bar but it took too much force to set it off so I started using the nail to take some of the force off the trigger bar. I've had some discussions with some patent experts and I've gone back and forth on patenting it. It costs a lot of money and I feel like people already love the Jaw Jacker. I have some variations I'm working on that could make this device more versatile. If they work out I think that could be worth trying for a patent.

Thanks for the tutorial, this helped a lot. I had made one using the coat hanger trigger, but it often wasn't sensitive enough for some of the finicky trout I've been fishing for. Caught 2 perch. One was decent and the other small but theyre perfect bait for burbot. I missed a third fish because I left too much mealworm hanging off the hook and the must have just pulled it because when I reeled up I was missing most of the worm. It works great though! I replaced the plastic tie with some 65 pound braid and it works wonders

I watched your DIY iFish Pro video and was thinking it would be great to make it into a combo jaw-jacker for different bites, that way you can bring one thing out with you and have both. It seems like the layout would be the main thing to figure out.

I would suggest a small finish nail for your pole loop. Have you experimented with a piece of heavy test fish line and a snap swivel to hold the pole tip under the kill bar. I think then you could just unclip the swivel from the pole eye when you wanted to remove the loop.

I did away with the spring loaded bar. Hook the loop on the eye on the trip bar. The load on the rod provides enough tension to engage the trigger.

I have used 1/4 a lot but never 1/2 or 3/4. If you can lay the bait on the bottom it would be fine. If not then I'm not sure - you will have to be the guinea pig. It is pretty sensitive but I think if you don't let the weight drop to a hard stop while the line is on the pedestal you might be fine. Just keep your face away from the rod while loading it just in case!

Yes the snapping of the rod gives a nice hookset. The mouse trap alone isn't enough movement to get a good hookset.

Thanks for watching! A 2 x 4 will work fine or a 2 x 6 if you want a little more stability. You can also use a 1x 4 or 1 x 6 if want. I don't think the extra thickness provides any added advantage.

Yes, I cut the straw in half vertically if that makes sense. It works best with a heavy duty straw - not a flimsy clear plastic one like you get in a restaurant. Any other similar plastic piece would also work, like a tiny piece of tubing cut in half, etc.

Take the kill bar off and put your loop on the tension bar. The rod tension will keep the bar on the trigger same as the flag on your ifish pro

Yes you can do that. I experimented with this when I was making it and I found that all the tension directly on the trigger bar reduces the sensitivity. The rod pull actually forces the trigger bar shut and it takes a pretty good pull to set it off - for me it did at least. That's why I spent extra time experimenting with the nail hanger for the loop. It takes the force off the trigger and the trap doesn't lose any sensitivity. But I would say go with what you like best!

There are a lot of things that I like about it and a few that I don't. You can't beat the price and the versatility. I use it for ice fishing and also tie it behind my canoe in the summer months. It has most of the capabilities of a flasher and open water fish finder. The thing I hate about it is that in cold weather you rely on your iPhone as the screen and the iPhone battery drains in cold weather unless you take some steps to prevent it. I was thinking about doing a deeper sonar tips and tricks video sometime in the future. Great to have you as a sub!

I don't currently have a way to get rid of the kill bar. I tried several ideas attaching the loop that is on the eyelet of the rod to the middle trigger bar. In that case the rod pulls on the trigger with so much force that the release becomes a whole lot stickier (less sensitive). I like this current version because it is very sensitive. Although I don't think it is essential, maybe in the future I will come up with a way to eliminate the kill bar - I still have a few more ideas.

It really depends on how big the sucker is. I use big minnows and it doesn't seem like they are even close to setting it off but it is sensitive enough to catch an average size bluegill.

How does the wind affect your invention

I've fished with it quite a bit in 10-15 mph winds and had no problem. The straw glued to the bait platform really helps with this. As long as you have a tight line and a little bit of weight it stays situated really well.

No I haven't. However, if you are concerned about it setting harder than you would like there are a few adjustments you can make. 1) Change the angle of the rod holder (tip it forward more) to reduce the rod tension. You might also want to move the rod holder back away from the mouse trap if you do this or use a shorter rod. 2) Use a rod with a softer tip and less backbone (less energy loaded in the rod when set.) 3) You can also use line with some elasticity to it (mono) which will absorb some of the impact.

@@BackroadsAngling Back again with a quick question. I have one built but the line will barely lay on the straw and when I tug on it, it doesnt set the trap. May sound like a dumb question but do you think I would need to adjust the angle of the rod holder to fix this?

@@tonybowen472 Without seeing it I have a few guesses as to what you can do. Make the loop on your rod tip smaller so that the tip is pulled closer to the kill bar. This will make the line drape tighter onto the straw. Also change the angle of the straw so that it is parallel to the board instead of at a downward angle which will help the line stay in contact with the straw. 3rd, put enough weight on your line so that it pulls down more strongly on the line to create tension. 4th make sure the trap is as flush with the edge of the board as possible so that the line drapes straight down the hole instead of out and then down. Basically whatever you can do to keep the line taught.

I made some of these to save money getting into ice fishing, great video. This last weekend I ended up missing fish because my mouse trap froze from the wind blowing the snow across the lake, fish would take my minnow without indication. Holes were freezing up within minutes of scooping out. I think I should have been using a conventional tipup in those conditions. Has anyone else had trouble with this design freezing up? Tips or tricks for freeze up? Or was I just doing something wrong? Thanks for the video, I’m having fun on the ice regardless of the number of fish I catch.

I've used mine for a few years and haven't had it freeze at the trap. I've definitely had the hole freeze over though. If your line is frozen in the hole it definitely won't set off. When it's cold I just make the rounds every 10-15 min to clear out my hole and make sure everything is freed up. If you buy a jaw jacker you should do the same thing. A conventional circular tip up that sits over the hole will slow down the freezing process but it won't set the hook for you. It depends on what kind of fish you are fishing for to determine whether you need a hooksetter or a conventional tip up.

those who live in ontario, dont make this, it is illegal to use a mechanical spring to hook fish. however, you could argue it is not the spring in the mouse trap that is setting the hook, it is the tension of the rod. but the game warden could be a dick and say the rod is the spring, and you didnt manually hook the fish yourself.

Yes this is a good point. Check your local regulations before you use these. As you say above the spring is not setting the hook on the fish and so it should be legal but consult your game warden first if you live in a state or province where there is a question.

One more thing - if you are concerned about the spring you can remove the spring and kill bar and simply loop the twisty tie over the trigger bar. It will provide the tension that the kill bar normally does.

Hey, B.A. I made some of these last December and man what a little slick design you got here. I added some of my own touches ( metal extension on the mouse trap for line protection from the snap of the kill bar and more sensitivity for those pesky perch!) but still haven’t perfected them yet. Thinking of collapsibility and storage as well as night time aid. Would love you bounce some ideas off of you via messaging somehow and maybe send you some pics of my design! Let me know what you think!

I applaud your efforts but you should check out the mouse jacker on the Iceshanty.com Idaho forum. A much simpler build.
