For those of you who want to get a C Stand for this, here's a few important safety things you need to know: It's safer to have the tallest leg of the stand directly underneath the arm holding the weight, and have a sandbag on this leg (or two if you need more weight). If you hang it on the end of the grip arm, it could be knocked off if you bump it. Secondly, make sure the arm is tightened on the right of the stand, so if it comes slightly loose, the weight will tighten it back down as it's turning righty-tighty. If it's on the left, it will loosen as it falls, and end up crashing to the ground. Pete has this right at 6:22 for reference. If you flip it around and look from the perspective of his sandbag towards the arm carrying the weight, his arm is on the right of the stand.
@marshalsea0002 жыл бұрын
Sorry for very late reply, but trying to sort out a setup my end. Isn't the sandbag at the end of the boom acting as a counterbalance? Therefore, we should probably have more sandbags > as you suggest on the bottom to keep the base stable and in place, and any additional weight at the rear of the boom to counter the weight of the camera, or is there a better way of doing this?

Eric Hong I cant tell u how its done but, lets just say when he showed the 10 of hearts, there was another card behind it (if u pause u can actully see it. One more thing, the king of hearts was forced. Meaning he wanted u to pick the card.
@nkmohamed7 жыл бұрын
Not sure if this has been said yet, the highest leg of the c-stand should always be towards the weight of grip arm and sandbagged (you have it away from the weight). This eliminates the potential of tipping. Then you can use a lighter sandbag up top near the first knuckle as a counterbalance. I like making sure I always have a 25# at minimum when working with c-stands. Your setup is light here so you can get away with potentially a 15#. This is sort of how I did an overhead shot once; I didn't think to thread an adapter to a second knuckle, I'll try that next time. I wish grip arms were longer so I could do a wider space sometimes. Thanks for showing!

I use an overhead rig in every one of my cooking videos. I use a microphone stand with a smart-phone mount to hold an iPhone 6S+ that records my overhead shots using the Filmic Pro app while simultaneously screen mirroring everything its recording to an Apple TV connected to the 70” big screen in my living room. This allows me to cook and also look up and see what I’m actually recording. This has worked quite well for my purposes and it’s well-received by my audience. But I would like to upgrade from an iPhone to a “real” camera to match the Canon 70D I use for straight-on shots. But the trouble of finding a way to support a larger camera combined with the lack of screen mirroring to the big screen as a monitor keeps me in my current rig, for better or for worse.

Another cool tip that I would use a DSLR is for a second hand portable audio recorder. Just take the lens off and use the mount cover only. Change your settings to the lowest quality for video and just use whatever mic. Then in post, take only the audio file and delete the black video file. It is great for doing a lot of sound effects or voice overs.

Two C-Stands with mafers holding a piece of lighter weight speed rail (conduit pipe). Mafer in the center with a stud into the camera for my lightweight rig. I find the grip arm straight off stand is too wobbly - if you're hitting record on-camera then you have to wait for it to stop wobbling. If you're shooting RED though Foolcontrol is perfect for stop/start functions and adjusting setting remotely.

ikea architecture lamp + 1/4" screw through a hole I drilled in it. Not the best angular control but certainly works as a moveable overhead rig. Screw goes in the bottom of the camera. Probably won't work for the heavy ones you use though. But for point and shoots... perfect.

Hey man, great video! I'm a commercial gaffer in Chicago; just wanted to give my 2 cents since grip/lighting gear is my second language. That tall leg on your c-stand should be underneath the weight of the camera or whatever you're extending out on the c-arm. I'd also recommend having a sandbag on that tall leg to prevent any lateral force from tipping the c-stand due to top heaviness. Otherwise, everything looked good to me. Nice rig!
